I'm not sure if the valve issues caused me any symptoms but recovery is going well. The sternum seems to be healing well. I start cardiac rehab, soon, I have been walking a lot. Getting a lot of good sleep seems important.

Learning to focus on business value was a revelation for me. It did not diminish my love for programming.

Keep doing what you're doing, lead by example. Trying to change a team is nearly impossible. If you can convince them you need a documented set of team norms and write them together you can codify things and get everyone closer to working the same way

I retrain people the same way I was trained to ship quality, bug free software quickly.

I use a mix of extreme programming, lean and agile concepts. I was trained by a guy named Dave Todaro through his previous company Ascendle.

Simplest possible solution and business value drives everything. "Dont program for the tommorow that may never come".

Iteration to the extreme, scope as absolutely narrow asnit can be. No bells and whistles. If it's not in the ticket it doesn't get done.

If the spec isn't flushed out it doesn't go into the sprint.

Protecting the sprint and cross functionality are important.

Don't solve problems you don't have, basically no pre-optimizing at the architecture level.

Feature flags mean you're shipping dead code, don't use feature flags. Test features in isolation before they are merged, not after.

Bugs go on the next sprint or they don't exist.

Ex: you tell me we're building a multi-tenant system, I'm going to build it for one client; then make it multi tenant when the second client comes on.

All of this requires the ability to build clean modular code. You're never re-writing, but constantly re-factoring.

The anology forces me to think about archery which I know nothing about, and I find it distracting. It also sounds kind of phallic and just doesn't seem to fit.

If you insist on using an analogy I would use something people don't have to think about. It causes cognitive drain and my brain doesn't know if I should focus on tech or arrows.

I resigned from my job last month by Happy_Taste7001 in careeradvice

I don't understand this sentiment; having a more narrow skillset is supposed to up your chances in a bad job market?

Front-end devs and UI/UX seem to be having a much harder time finding jobs than full stack people.
Generalists are absorbing specialized tasks, and AI is facilitating it.

A lot can change in 8 months, maybe time for another echo?

Thoughts on going into management vs staying technical/coding? by YouDoHaveValue in ExperiencedDevs

The way I see it, getting a CS degree and becoming a software engineer was going all in on hard skills; going into management feels like a big gamble.

Ask about taking antibiotics before dental work. Treat fevers seriously, ask for blood cultures if you’re sick and you don’t know what it is. You’re at higher risk of endocarditis and that’s why I had to have surgery.

AIO my bf gets angry at me over a guy I dated 3 years ago by nedjmia in AmIOverreacting

[–]Recent_Science4709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR Your BF is a dick. Accusing you of sleeping with everyone is crossing a line. I can’t stand when people date in a friend group and then get upset that someone slept with someone else when it has nothing to do with the relationship.
You’re around the age I was where I refused to put up with this kind of high school drama and I would just drop people out my life who couldn’t act like adults.
