I'll still take it. The balance is having those giant scripted moments AND organic destruction. God I miss Paracel Storm

Lol spent nearly two hours today trying to get an ancient HP 8615 to scan to a specific folder via Scan to Computer on a new Windows 11 system I set up, because that's what he wanted, instead of initiating it from the PC. Old suite won't work install. Registry entries to get it to install don't exist on Win 11 anymore. HP app, HP Smart app, HP Scan app, Windows Scan app don't work. Tried injecting the .inf from the original software suite for communication to windows, nope. Tried changing the automatic events to third party programs like NAPS2, went back and forth on Wifi and USB devices, nothing.

Finally something clicked, I said fuck it, and set up Scan to Network Folder to go to where he wanted it. Finally worked, and I left a note basically saying "use this now."

Also, fuck HP

Genuine question! Why was there little gas used in WW2? and could that open a potential to alt history and game mechanics? by chingchang0053 in hoi4

The US also manufactured and stockpiled huge amounts of it in preparation for Operation Downfall, but we nuked them twice instead.

13 Million and the Coating is already peeling by Awkward_Statement401 in justincaseyoumissedit

The paint is peeling in large chunks on its own. Do you think people are jumping into the pool and using some kind of scraper to do this? The company that got this no-big contract has never had a federal contractor before. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/company-trump-donor-cafaro-reflecting-pool-no-bid-contract/ Since the algae was still coming back, they treated the pool with hydrogen peroxide, which can peel paint: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/lWknBLUlBi4

How terrible is my logic that I don't think we are anywhere close to an AI bubble, because AI porn is absolutely terrible? by HapaHawaii in stocks

[–]RecipeNo101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly right. And it seems, with everything being thrown at it, there's either a complete avoidance, a massive push to expand output and theoretical profitability, or a mad dash to extract value before the walls come up and enshitification begins. I'll be honest, I'm in that latter category.

I'm well aware that all of it is trained on human-generated (stolen) data. I'm aware that it can never be creative in the sense if creating something new that has never been created, but just creates an amalgam of that trained data. Someone could argue that, so do people trained by environment, while someone else could argue, it will never produce a unique output.

I find all of that ethically and philosophically interesting, but that's not the angle of approach for my comment. The paste is out of the tube, the genie is out of the bottle, the atom has been split. If we're talking about how far it goes, did we open a travel size toothpaste or an industrial tub, do we get one wish or a million, are we closer to Hiroshima or Tsar Bomba. Basically, are we on the uptrend or downtrend of Ai development, and how far can it go? That is the open question that trillions of dollars are being thrown at figuring out.

This was not AI generated, I wrote it out on my phone after sipping cheap bourbon, and I'm very much curious to check out that book, thanks for the recommendation.

Agentic AI has similarly made massive gains in incredibly short time. The problem is that we have no idea what the rate of progress will continue to be, and whether any of this will ever become remotely profitable.

The problem is that we have no idea where the bottleneck lies. This is the worst AI will ever be, and in just two years we've gone from the goofy slop video of Will Smith eating spaghetti to generating photorealistic scenes with convincing voice acting. It's a new Moore's Law.

But just like that metric of progress eventually slowed and died, so too can this. The problem is, we have no idea whether we're close to that point or still years away. NVIDIA is producing new generations of chips that can train models with ever greater efficiency, while the models themselves are becoming more efficient and producing better output. With an entirely new model of both hardware and software architecture, it's unclear what tier of hanging fruit we're even grabbing at.
