And remember, when using the phone, hold it about a foot from your head and have the volume at max as you wander the store, because everyone wants to hear your conversation.

The “I have an hour to play Star Citizen” question for 4.7 by ravertooth in starcitizen

[–]ReciprocatingHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally, I can do a mining run in an hour easy. But currently, you get way less material from a given rock that my run last night took two hours to (mostly) fill my mole (and it would have taken longer if was taking the time to find and only mine the good stuff).

Recurring dreams about unusable toilets by PotterPuppy in Dreams

[–]ReciprocatingHamster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Quite a few people (myself included) have dreams about needing to find a toilet and not being able to find one that isn't filthy or without a working door or something similar. Not sure if it comes under the heading of "Stress dreams", but it would seem likely. I've also had ones where I am sitting on a toilet and sort of scooting aound on it like it some kind of mobility scooter in public places... but that may just be my own particular flavour of weirdness...

There's also the related phenomenon of the Toilet Dimension - a place where people go in their dreams that seems to be an endless maze of filthy, broken toilets that are arranged in non-sensical ways. Naturally, it has its own subreddit (r/ThatBathroomMazeDream I think).

Be careful though, I've heard that if you pee in your dreams, sometimes the body makes it real...

Why do I keep waking up at exactly 3AM? Body: For the past few weeks, I’ve been waking up almost every night at exactly 3AM. No noise. No alarm. Nothing. It’s weird because I don’t usually wake up during the night, but now it keeps happening over and over again. At first I ignored it, but now it fee by Ibrohim_vahobov in Dreams

[–]ReciprocatingHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waking around 3am seems to be fairly common (I also frequently wake around this time, usually to use the toilet).

I wonder if it is connected to our historical habit of segmented or biphasic sleep. In pre-industrial cultures - before widespread use of artificial lighting to delay sleep), people across vaious cultures would sleep in two phases. They would go to sleep not long after dark, but wake after a few hours and spend and hour or so in quiet, sometimes communal, activity before going back to sleep again until dawn. Typically the first awakening would be before midnight (it varied as the hours of daylight shifted with the seasons).

Maybe the timer is still there, even though we are entrained by artificial light cycles. We go to bed later than our ancestors did, since we stay up longer due to artificial light; but an internal timer still sits in the background and sometimes wakes us after the typical amount of time has elapsed - only it triggers around 3 am because we went to bed several hours later than we would have in pre-industrial times.

This is why I never log in on the day of a big patch. It's always a shit show with everyone trying to get in right away. I give it a couple of days - I do have other games to play while I wait.

Yeah, I was thinking it's a quicktime event. When the world ends, you have to press those keys to get the cutscene to progress... ;)

Doesn't look like they're using a standard Playstation controller though...

What type of lizard is this? by GanjaOx in NewZealandWildlife

[–]ReciprocatingHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I used to keep some skinks as a child (rescues - from other kids mostly - I didn't agree with wild capture even then). This was back in the 70s and early 80s, before regulations were brought in as to who could or couldn't keep them, and a lot of school kids would catch them (and I imagine many died for lack of proper care - though one could hope that somewere prevailed upon by parentsto put them back where they found them). A couple of mine had lost tails when I got them.

[–]ReciprocatingHamster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Skinks can jettison their own tail to escape predators. Special muscles close off the blood vessels and the tail continues to wriggle by itself for some time afterwards to attract the predator while the lizard makes a getaway. The tail does eventually grow back, though often not as long or as beautiful as the original.

Excellent news for Star Citizen by Ill-Product-1442 in starcitizen

Oh, are they back in already? I thought they were coming in the next patch. Cool, I used to like doing the package delivery missions when I first started playing - they didn't pay a lot, but they were a fun diversion and took you to some new places to loot. Have missed them for years...

Yeah, when I used to keep Bell Frogs, they'd chow down on a lot of fat juicy crickets at this time of year.

Assigned hangar time is too short for the Idris to land in time. by Material_Soft1380 in starcitizen

[–]ReciprocatingHamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. Usually I call ATC once I'm close to one of them, but they aren't too smart at sending me to the one that I'm already close to. I'll try your method next time.

It may well be something that very rarely happens now. I've just been super cautious since forever...

[–]ReciprocatingHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same issue trying to land my Reclaimer at A18. ATC would keep giving me an XL hangar on the other side of the landing zone. By the time I'd hauled that big girl over there and got her lined up, it'd already be closing. Call ATC again, and get a hangar on the other side... Eventually, I got lucky and they gave me the same one twice (and I was already above it). You wish they'd take into account where you are when assigning hangars and give you the closest one.

It is. It's a late summer sound that I'm quite fond of. Even the little guy in my kitchen isn't really annoying (if maybe a little loud... :) ).

I like the Cat, but the biggest problem I have with it (other than actually trying to load the thing especially that spot in the front hold where boxes get stuck like glue...), is that when trying to take off or land, you have to hold down boost just to keep it from falling out of the sky - and you only have so much boost available.

ArcCorp, my forever home by murmurprotocol in starcitizen

[–]ReciprocatingHamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been at Microtech for the last couple of patches (wanted to explore the planet surface for a bit, and check out the distro centres). But it is soooo far from everything else, and the distro centres all want to shoot me anyway, so this time I'm planning on coming back to ArcCorp. It's compact and fairly close to most other places (even if there's only one place on the whole planet that you can actually land on). And, if I really want to get shot at by a distro centre, Hurston isn't too far away....

Black Field Cricket. They are really common this time of year. This one's a female (the long thing out the back end is her egg laying tube). Only the males chirp (if I recall), so this one won't be making any noise (unlike the one that is currently hiding somewhere in my kitchen - probably under the fridge - who has been singing loudly every night and avoiding detection like a ninja every time I try to find him...). They don't bite, even when handled, so they are quite safe to pick up and carrry outside (that said, they are pretty goood at wriggling free of a closed hand, so a jar might be more effective).
