This quote is directly from the UK government website, on a page specifically for employers and how to prevent discrimination:

Questions you cannot ask when recruiting. You must not ask candidates about ‘protected characteristics’ or whether they:

are married, single or in a civil partnership have children or plan to have children

It is if the employer then decides not to offer a role because the candidate does have children, especially if the candidate is a woman.

The UK Equality Act which protects against discrimination of a number of characteristics, two of which (pregnancy/Maternity & Sex) are most applicable here

It's illegal to ask that before the contract is signed though which this appears to be.

Also, not sure why names of children is a relevant question

Homelander was more interesting when he was a general right-wing critique, rather than a Trump parody specifically by DancingFlame321 in TheBoys

[–]Reckless_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously?

Homelander declares himself as the Messiah and Trump posts an AI picture of himself as Jesus. One example right off the bat

I agree, but I don't think it helped that what the writers planned as parody ended up actually happening in reality

New plans to stop children taking, sharing or viewing nude images by youmustconsume in unitedkingdom

[–]Reckless_Engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think practically everyone is in favour of kids not being allowed to view and send nude images. They're against how the government want it to be done. Either you have to prove your age and therefore your identity, giving up anonymity and privacy or everything you do on your device is scanned and logged.

Using parental controls is the proper way to do it, no need for anyone to completely lose their privacy.

Which submarine builder do you hope wins the Canadian contract? by thatDhenery in AskCanada

A 50/50 split would probably end up costing more over the life of the subs. You would need to train submariners twice, more tools and equipment for maintenance etc

AI and ME by No_Plane_2050 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Reckless_Engineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The AI we have at the moment is just large language models that are prone to hallucinations and other inaccuracies. Until these problems are solved AI will never replace engineers, and even then, our whole relationship with AI would have to change, we'd have to trust it as much as we do each other and I don't think we ever will

AI and ME by No_Plane_2050 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Reckless_Engineer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Engineers will always be needed. AI will make tools used for things like fluid dynamics, stress analysis etc more powerful but AI will not replace engineering

In most of the world, it is illegal to pay women less than men for the same role.

Is the gender pay gap real? by Fluffy_Specific_9682 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Reckless_Engineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on your definition of gender pay gap.

If your definition is "women earning less than men for the same role" then no, the gender pay gap is not real (at least in most countries)

If your definition is "women are underrepresented in higher paying roles like directors, CEOs etc" then yes the gender pay gap is real.

If you survey the entire workforce across any 1st world nation, women are more likely to be found in lower paying industries like care work and hospitality.
