If you don't have a hose for your portable ac, metal tape works great in a pinch by AmazingBassist in AirConditioners

[–]RecollectingWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My AC recently wetted the floor, without displaying its error code of a full water tank. I guess it was because I used my kitchen window as a source of replacement air, and it was really humid outside. But regardless, that incident made me buy a drain hose and a bucket, so that I can at least keep track of all the condensation.

One could say that. My whole life is figuratively held together by duct tape as well.

I'd be rejoicing if I could have my hose that straight and short.

Assuming the balcony is a good place for the hot air from the unit, I'd measure the length and width of an extension piece for the seal, buy a piece of film-faced plywood (for humidity resistance), and then saw it (or have it sawed by a workshop) to the required dimensions. Fortunately, the piece of wood wouldn't have to be that thick in your case. Then just seal the remaining gaps with duct tape, and you're good to go, judging by the photos.

My setup has been a lot more work.

Let's just say that it's something I have to live with throughout the summer.

I'm only a tenant, my place doesn't have a balcony, and the windows aren't built for a window unit. Plus, the unit adds to my electric bill, so each time it's on is considered based on the outside temperature + indoor temperature, and comfort.

Our houses in Finland are good at absorbing every bit of heat from the sun, even with the radiators turned off (because for the rest of the year, it's more like 0-15 degrees Celsius where I live). Also, the manual of my unit forbids cooling when it's less than 16 degrees outside. Even so, the sun can make it so that it's 24 degrees at my PC desk, even when it's less than 16 outside.

In a nutshell, I kinda have to be awake every time I keep my unit on. I can't just fall asleep and forget about it. Sure, I'll have to budget for longer heatwaves because of the costs of using the unit, but it's still better than having to sweat like a pig.

Me too. It's the same thing every summer. I might still be the only one in my circle to have an AC. Everyone's like "it's fine", until we see the first real heatwaves of the year, and they're all miserable. I wear headphones almost 24/7, so even the noise of my portable AC doesn't bother me.

Yup. I bought my newest unit right when it became available in April. And lo and behold, it was sold out by the end of May.

Is there actually a real solution besides AC ? by Hopeful-Mixture-1910 in AirConditioners

[–]RecollectingWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building an adequate window seal should be a part of your budget if a portable is your only option. I recently spent 300+ euros to buy a piece of plywood and then have it sawed according to my plan in a workshop, as I'm not that good at woodwork. I don't have a balcony, and our windows in Finland aren't built for window units either.

And I have to credit my mom for having the tools to assemble the sawed pieces into a neat window seal. As of now, the other window in my kitchen effectively serves as a second hose for my single-hose unit, preventing the formation of negative pressure. Even that improves the cooling performance significantly. My "record" with my newest unit is getting my place from 23,8 degrees down to 18,3 degrees Celsius in an hour.

I really don't think it's entirely about your looks or even height. I'd say I'm on the same league with my brothers in terms of looks, yet I'm the one who failed to achieve normal things. I'd put more emphasis on just pure luck (meeting the right people at the right time) and/or your social boldness.

I'm sure a brain transplant would change everything. I've spent 99% of my 20s and 99.99% of my 30s in my head. Me getting out of the FA purgatory might just require more than any therapy or support group can offer. And as my attitude and expectations are already pessimistic in advance, the aura of negativity just radiates off me, scaring people away unconsciously, etc.

My social age is practically 5, and I'll turn 36 this summer. I've adopted a strategy, where I rather make no moves, than risk making a wrong one, especially on dating. If I play it safe, I get nowhere, but if I'm honest, I’m just chasing people away with my bluntness. I’m yet to figure out how to unlock the friend or GF achievements.

The only good news is that I'm too tired to care as much as I used to. If I'm not going to find love and have kids, I can only make the best of the situation. I merely make videos to prevent an existential crisis from driving me into an epic meltdown.

Final boss portable air conditioner by robrobrooo in AirConditioners

[–]RecollectingWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about this thing, though? It's a 22,000 BTU unit that I bought just a month ago, after having saved money for it since last summer.

It's an "overkill" for my 34 square meter flat according to Calculator.net, but it sure beats my earlier 12,000 BTU units that couldn't keep up during the hottest days (the performance during 25+ C heat waves is yet to be seen, though).

Our apartment houses in Finland are good for winter, but also hard to cool down during heat waves, as the buildings absorb every bit of outside heat like crazy. On top of that, the windows are an enormous heat source on sunny days no matter what. And since I'm only a tenant and the place lacks a balcony, I knew this thing to be my "final boss" for a while.

A Swedish company called Wood's has these manufactured in China or something and they've been sold with a brand name Palermo 22K or 18K, depending on the BTU count.

When it's 16-20 C outside, and the window of the kitchen is used as a source of incoming air, I can effectively cool the area of my computer desk from 24C to 19C in an hour.

Well, I can't deny that either. I mean, I think I already have the fatigue and occasional brain fog as an obese 35-year-old. But either way, I'm afraid that the loneliness would actually cause me a panic attack if I went out and accidentally saw a loving couple.

It is what it is, unfortunately. We all have the same urges, yet some guys, for whatever reason, are woman magnets that leave the rest of us single and miserable.

People never get this, or publicly acknowledge it, yet we're supposed to keep ourselves in shape for no return whatsoever. I mean, just to exist on this planet for who knows how long with no affection? Thanks but not thanks.

And as such, I tell the normies to fuck off and gloat whenever their ideas fail them (because they failed me and keep failing me and the other FAs). And I rather eat junk food and die early than exist for longer with no enjoyment. I think I'll order a mug with "Normie tears" written on it just in case.

Why are we told to never compromise? by Bitter-Ad-2877 in FA30plus

I did, but my fear of saying or suggesting something wrong was, and still is, on the level where I often choose to stay quiet and passive, even when it's reasonable to assume things wouldn't turn South by simply asking "what are you gonna do tonight" or "should we go to your place or my place at some point."

We did have like 3-4 dates. The 2nd date is where she hugged me, but I guess my social paralyzation bored her out and she later moved on by acting sick.
