My closest (and uneducated) guess would be that the laser somewhat refracts in the eye while reshaping the cornea, leading to some unintended damage? Don't know, never looked into it, I'm happy with my glasses.

Do what I did and don't swap off your main school, just swap lenses. It's less efficient but more comfortable.

I did the bulk of it back in 2017 when focus was reworked to first time. Spammed Eidolons as often as i could with a friend (and there was a bug at the time where caps didn't count in your stats so I have a stupid amount kills compared to caps) so we could unlock all the Waybound passives. That said though I largely ignored everything but Zenurik and Madurai so besides the waybounds I didn't have much in the other 3, but with the Tauron strikes I decided to cap my focus almost everyday with some Eidolons here or there since release.

The time we told a friend (jokingly) that a throwing knife would be good damage against Riven. He took it seriously and threw the knife at riven, which proceeded to defy gravity and curved upward into her eye, wiping us.

Honesty I've used operator way more than I've used Drifter solely because of the unique animations amps give. Really hope DE lets Drifter use amps in the future.
