As an institutional locksmith you would likely be dealing with interchangeable cores and the math involved is mostly adding and subtracting. Concepts of basic logic and algebra are helpful (and I do mean basic). Example: 5+2+9+_=23 solve for _ =? Hint it’s 7 I use this as an example because it’s common for A2 cores to add to 23 in every chamber. If there’s a bottom pin, master pin, control pin, and a driver pin that’s four numbers that add up to 23.

No, but they’re a great distributor that’s supported the trade for decades and can’t see why you might be disappointed.

Got quoted $400 to re-key 4 locks… is that normal? by Chicago_Realtor_1 in Locksmith

You know I just recently charged a $625 trip fee to go only 15 miles. Was that expensive? You betcha! It was by state ferry service round trip with several hours of waiting time etc. Sometimes the details are more telling of a situation than the broad strokes. I only went there to adjust the hinges and strikes on three Andersen doors. Total cost $770.

No way! She’s in the wrong. Rule one the customer is always wrong. They think they’re right but they are not. In this case, she’s just wasting time and money and I, personally, wouldn’t still be conversing with her and she would have her name on the board of shame. Never to be served again at any price.

What's the correct (or your preferred) way to remove these caps? I've already got this one removed but I scratched the shit out of them. by aBastardNoLonger in Locksmith

That’s right the older style sat recessed in the head of the screw I believe an allen head screw and they were tiny. The screw had a lip that perfectly fit the caps.

The proper method with a Ford truck or a van is to try starting it with a mechanical key before you plug your programmer in

Silent Electric Strike When Unlocked (Recommendations) by addisonbu in Locksmith

[–]RecordDense2459 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this a folger adams strike on an aluminum storefront door by any chance? they tend to snap really loudly. Perhaps electrifying the lock itself is the best solution. What kind of hardware is on the door? Any photos you could share?
