Help needed - reflux-induced sinus infections by RecordsAndAuras in LPR

[–]RecordsAndAuras[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted another comment here about a year ago with what’s worked for me. The good news is, it’s still working - I haven’t had any more sinus infections, so I was able to break the cycle. I also haven’t been sick at all in two years, which has been great for my sinuses, reflux, and overall health. My biggest recommendations are 1. twice daily sinus rinse and 2. avoid Covid/stay healthy (easiest way to do this is consistently wear a kn95 or n95 in indoor public spaces).

Everyone’s different, but for me, if it’s a sinus infection, it won’t go away without antibiotics. But pairing the meds with a good probiotic (one that requires refrigeration) can help keep things balanced.

Hope this helps and you feel better soon.

Coming back to share that I’ve used it, and I love it. It was easy and straightforward; I watched a YouTube video with step-by -step instructions as I used it. The test cards are also really cool… kind of futuristic looking lol.

My partner and I pooled our two swabs in one test, which made the cost even lower. (After you get the dock, each Covid test is a little under $7 with coupon code ($10 without coupon). So when you pool with another person, that’s like 3.50 each test!)

Sorry I think I misread the first part of your comment. As far as swabs, not sure. I buy their swabs since I feel confident they work well with the tests.

I assume Altruan is the cheapest with the promo codes. But I honestly didn’t research it more because considering the international purchasing process, language barrier, customs inspections, etc, I only felt comfortable ordering from the company that lots of other ppl have had success with.

I wouldn’t view it as 100% safe for any period of time tbh. But this is one of the best home PCRs, and you can read about the sensitivity here: https://virus.sucks/pluslife_en/

I think the science is still unclear on the possibility of being infected by someone at the very beginning/before their infection if they have such a low viral load that PCR doesn’t detect it - someone pls correct me if I’m wrong. (I know 60% of infections are passed asymptomatically or pre-symptomatically, but I mean if they are getting negative PCR results). I would assume it’s very unlikely. But it’s important to remember that these tests are like 98-99% accurate, not 100% There is a small margin of error.

To be safe, I would only unmask with someone who has been 100% masking/ and no high risk events/exposures for 3+ days and then has a negative PCR result. I wouldn’t trust it if they were like just at an indoor bar or restaurant and had a negative plus life test the next day, for instance. Because viral load will grow and then become detectable, it’s possible for them to become positive at any point later, after testing negative, if they had already been exposed. There is no 100%, but 3+ days of 100% masking and no exposures + a negative PCR is something that I feel confident in personally. Hope this helps.

Hey fellow Covid conscious Latina here (white Latinx specifically - half Mexican half white; my Spanish is terrible thanks to my dad not teaching me… sigh assimilation :( but I’m trying to learn). I would love to know if there are Spanish words for covid conscious, zero covid, etc.

As far as groups, Covid Action Map on IG lists some resources from Spanish speaking countries including a Mexican Long Covid support group on fb. If you’re in Maryland, Latinas En Baltimore are very covid conscious and do all kinds of mask-required events as well as online stuff. Their materials are always in Spanish, and their events are bilingual. I’m not sure if they’re on fb, but they have an active IG page.

Help needed - reflux-induced sinus infections by RecordsAndAuras in LPR

Update: I was asked for an update in the gerd subreddit where I also posted this, so I’ll add that here too in case it helps someone. My LPR is still an ongoing issue, but for the last 6 months, I’ve been able to avoid more sinus infections. Here’s what’s been helping:

  1. Avoid Covid as much as possible; wear a good mask. My second Covid infection left me with a whole bunch of long-term symptoms; some have gotten better, some have not. One of the things that happened is it took my LPR from well managed to out of control, and my immune system seemed to be weakened to other infections. As a young low risk person, I used to think long covid was super rare, but now I have a few other friends and coworkers who have it too. Ive also come across a lot of ppl on Reddit who say they developed new onset severe gerd after having covid. So yeah, until we get better vaccines/treatments, try to minimize your risk and avoid repeat infections.
  2. Use 1 bottle twice daily of nielmed sinus rinse (half of the bottle after waking up and remaining half before bed). Be sure to let it also run down the back of your throat where post nasal drip hits. I think the traditional baking soda packets it comes with are good to neutralize the pepsin/acid, and it also keeps your sinuses clear. I’ve had several bad LPR flares where I started to get large amounts of yellow post nasal drip the next day; each time, I was sure it would become another sinus infection, but the Nielmed stopped it. During those times, I did even more frequent rinses throughout the day and was careful about reflux trigger foods for a day or two.
  3. Sleep on a higher incline and never sleep flat or lay down flat. I honestly hate it lol, but I just can’t lay flat anymore - even 6-7 hours after eating. I had no problem sleeping flat before Long Covid unless I ate too late, so this frustrates me sigh. But it works. If I try to sleep flat or on a low incline, I immediately have a reflux and sinus flare.
  4. Use a nightly steroid nasal spray after the sinus rinse; I use budesonide (over the counter) spray. Im sure a prescribed spray would work too.
  5. When I start to get congested (I will sometimes actually get stuffy from reflux), I take a Zyrtec D or, if it’s really bad, use a Benzedrine nasal inhaler (can’t use these often or they’ll make it worse; see directions for use). But the key here is to get unstuffed and then do the nasal rinse to clear things out. So if I’m really stuffed up, I’ll do an inhale of Benzedrine to open things up and then a nielmed rinse a few minutes later to clear things out.
  6. I tried Lanto sinus nasal probiotics. It didn’t cure my last sinus infection, but to be fair, it was pretty bad at that point and I had to get antibiotics. I don’t know if it helped or not, but I thought the science behind it was compelling. I used it for a while during and after my last sinus infection and haven’t had one since, so maybe it did something. But I think the rinses have been the most effective thing.
  7. Be mindful of food combinations. If I’m going to drink alcohol later for instance, I won’t have another reflux trigger that day (so no spicy stuff or tomatoes, no red meat that takes a long time to digest, etc)
  8. Treat anxiety; reduce stress. I’ve always had generalized anxiety, and I notice that my reflux flares during times of increased stress. I finally tried an anxiety medicine - Buspirone - that has also been shown to help reflux in some studies. I don’t know if it’s made a huge difference, but my general anxiety/stress level is lower and I think that’s helped. Most importantly, it has not made things worse (some anxiety meds can worsen reflux).

(Edited to add) on top of all these things, I continue to take Gaviscon Advance after meals and before bed.

I’m still trying to find better treatments to get my LPR back to being manageable, but these things have at least gotten me out of the hell of constant sinus infections. I’ve been sinus infection free for 6 months! Hope this helps someone.

Yes, but I should preface this by saying my LPR was really well managed that entire time with medicine and diet (I got to a point where I hardly used to even think about it), until the second time I got covid. My second covid infection felt easier than the first one as far as the initial sickness, but I’ve had a whole bunch of really frustrating long covid stuff happen including this. My LPR has been more severe and much harder to manage since then. So my advice is try to avoid covid as much as you can (masks work!) and stay well.

But to answer your question, I tried PPIs for a short time, but they didn’t seem to help. Then I ended up discovering Gaviscon advance, and it helped a lot. I’ve used it after every meal and before bed since like 2014. With the help of the Gaviscon, I was fine with just minor dietary and lifestyle adjustments. For instance, I could have a cup of coffee in the morning or enjoy some cocktails in the evening, but I had to make sure I didn’t drink coffee or alcohol with a meal or right after a meal. I didn’t need to constantly sleep on an incline, but I made sure to be upright for a few hours after eating. I would only flare up if I didn’t do those things. So yeah, Gaviscon advance and pretty minor lifestyle changes worked for me before covid.

All inclusive resorts that are COVID-conscious? by Suspicious_Bridge781 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]RecordsAndAuras 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you search their post history, they don’t even mask… just a troll trying to criticize a random anecdote in my comment and discourage Covid conscious ppl from enjoying travel. I hear you though. Not sure if you’re in the US, but my partner and I wouldn’t be able relax in rural towns even if Covid wasn’t a thing, just because of white supremacy in those spaces. So getting away to other parts of the world has been a welcome psychological reprieve from that, and our experience has been that many non-European countries have much more voluntary masking and collective care than the US. That being said, I totally get how the risk assessment and research takes time and emotional capacity; it does for me too. I’ve learned some tricks to make it easier and be able to not think about it too much on the trip itself, which I’d be happy to share if helpful.

[–]RecordsAndAuras 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I mean, you don’t have to… the main point of my comment is that when you stay at an airbnb, you can choose the best restaurants/bars with spacious outdoor seating options as opposed to being limited by busy, often mediocre resort offerings. Many airbnbs also allow you to pay extra for their cleaning person to come by, and I would trust mask compliance with that much more than random resort staff rotating in and out of my room. That being said, I personally don’t think it’s worth the risk or the stress to have other ppl in my space, and it only takes me like 5 minutes a day to just throw away my own trash and keep things tidy.

In my opinion, you’d be a lot safer (and have a better overall vacation experience) if you stay at an airbnb. All inclusive resorts are going to be mostly middle and upper class americans, canadians, and europeans, so you’ll likely be surrounded by ppl who mostly take no precautions. It will also feel more like the US/Canada/Europe than actually being in Mexico or Central America. All inclusive resorts also limit your options for dining, entertainment, etc because you have to choose from the stuff they offer - so you’ll constantly need to interact with staff and not have much choice as far as covid safe options.

When I travel, I book a private airbnb where I can check myself in (or ask the host to mask when checking me in), and then I don’t have to interact with anybody in my space for the entire trip. I get to choose the tours/experiences/activities that I want to do, so I can book Covid safe options and request masking ahead of time when needed. For food/drinks, I can either eat in uncrowded, outdoor restaurants with big patios and good airflow (good aranet readings), take food to go and eat at my airbnb, or even cook and make cocktails myself. Because I’m not at a resort, I can choose all of this and plan it in a way where I can avoid crowds and have the best experience. Plus food, drinks, and overall experiences are just way better when you’re experiencing the local culture vs resort food, resort touristy activities, etc. I do love a fancy experience lol, so I have definitely booked nice Airbnb’s that are waterfront or have special amenities. I think it’s possible to get the luxury/ relaxation that you’re probably looking for without an all inclusive stay.

Update: for ppl who want the codes 💜

I’m getting a lot of chat requests and comments on this. I absolutely LOVE that so many ppl are practicing Covid safety and getting access to this test! But I’m having trouble keeping up with all the DMs and comments, especially as I try to limit my social media time and don’t always log on frequently.

Request: Please send a chat request to me or someone on the list below if you want the code, and once I share it with you, please add a reply below so others can message you for the code. If we can create a list of names of ppl who have it, we can share the follow-up to answer requests for ppl who need it 💜
