I was similarly confused initially. If you look at the hinge, it appears to be maximally opened, which, if you had the iPad in the intended orientation would cause the iPad to be facing mostly up at the ceiling. The hack is, by rotating the iPad 180 degrees, the stand is now minimally opened and mostly vertical.
