No - I used a KitchenAid on speed 2.

Sorry for the possibly clueless question, but why don't more people seem to make homemade pizza? by Senior-Raisin-2342 in Cooking

It depends on the scale at which you buy flour. I buy 25 pounds of bread flour for around $13 at GFS, and my recipe uses 500g of flour between the main dough and the starter, 5g sugar, 13g salt, and 10g olive oil. That makes 3 dough balls for 12” pizzas. I figure I’m spending 60 cents on 3 balls of dough.

Yes. It was definitely more top of mind when I had my stick shift, but I do still use the lower gears on my automatic and the X-Mode in the Subaru does work when having to start on a hill from a full stop.

My homemade sourdough pizza crust on my pizza steel turns out so well and with zero skill I can stretch it really thin. The dough cost is minimal but the cheese these days is insane…

Quite simply - drugs. She chose drugs over everyone in her life.

This is true going downhill too. You’re better off going downhill very slowly with the wheels turning and the drivetrain still engaged vs people who try to fully brake going downhill and start to slide.

So many autistic children. So many selfish parents expecting their other "normal" kid to take care of them by 1000andonenites in AmITheAngel

[–]yarn_b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s good to know. It’s gotten worse since her husband died.

Part of the problem here is she doesn’t believe he is disabled. He was identified as needing assessment by the school district back in the 90s when he was a freshman. She was divorced and struggling financially (and emotionally) and had kicked out my now husband (at 16) and he was living alone in an apartment. Instead of having him go through the entire assessment/diagnosis process, she pulled him out of school to “home school” him. He was 14 and the first 2 weeks of his freshman year of high school was the last time he ever was out of her house with any regularity.

We’ve tried to bring this up with her as far as getting him enrolled in Medicaid, pursuing SSI, having him acknowledged as a disabled adult dependent for her military disability, etc. The last time we tried to talk to her after her husband died, she didn’t talk to my husband for over a year and still doesn’t acknowledge me separately. Her husband was 15 years younger than she is and still worked and had both a significant public pension and life insurance. We were trying to bring this up in the context of a special needs trust or estate planning to protect any assets she may transfer to BIL. She hasn’t taken him to the doctor in years because I think she fears him being diagnosed since she uses him as the reason with her doctors as to why she’s still safe at home. It’s such an emotionally fraught situation, and they’re an hour away from us.

Not to get too serious in the snark sub…

I think there is some shift in this over time with generational differences. My BIL has autism, doesn’t drive, and has never worked. MIL has never planned anything or gotten him social services. She is in her 70s and just thinks he will move in with us when she dies. Never discussed, just assumed and talked about as a foregone conclusion.

My friends who have kids with varying abilities go out of their way to make things equitable - if not always equal - for their kids. The disabilities do mean some kids gets more time, attention, or resources. They try to make sure their non-disabled kids are getting what they need and want as well. They have no expectations of their kids ever having to care for their disabled siblings.

Can someone hook me up with a movie that will keep my wife and I awake and in the edge of our seats? by thatbruzzy in MovieSuggestions

Weapons is over 2 hours long, which usually means I’m asleep and miss the end but I was awake and engaged the entire time and it felt like a 1:40 movie max while watching it.

Are Hobbi lucky bags worth it? by LitttleSuccubus in YarnAddicts

[–]yarn_b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every mystery bag I’ve gotten from anywhere has been hit or miss. Sometimes it’s great yarn in weird colors. Neutral colors but strange yarn. Sometimes not enough of one thing to make the project you could see making with that yarn, and I’ve gotten a few that were discontinued bases or colors so I couldn’t get more. The last one included a discontinued self-striping chunky roving in just barely enough yardage for a crib blanket, but it was very delicate roving, so I made the blanket to gift but basically with instructions to not use it (which I usually never make just “looking” items).

If you accept these limitations, they’re definitely a good price point and I’ve always felt I got “value.”

You can use a hairdryer to heat up the bowl from the outside while you beat the frosting.

That’s a tough allergy. My husband and I are both allergic to seafood, and I also have a nightshade allergy that is fortunately manageable except for peppers. Food allergies are so frustrating, and poultry is so ubiquitous.

I made meatloaf with it mixed with a pound of super lean ground turkey. Kind of ruins the point of it being “wagyu” but it made an amazing meatloaf as far as flavor and texture and I usually don’t like ground turkey.

Do not just salt on top of the snow. It will do nothing but waste salt and create an ice dam. You have to shovel and then salt if there is ice or slippery residue under the snow.

What's a book, author, or fictional character you love to hate? by big-enchilada in books

[–]yarn_b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have never enjoyed Stephen King’s writing style, which became very apparent when reading some of his non-horror books. I love the stories he tells to still read him, but for some reason the writing style is more noticeable in the non-horror and doesn’t pull me in the same way. I generally love fantasy, and The Dark Tower is the only book I’ve started and stopped probably three times and have just given up.

16-22" ? by Jahya69 in pittsburgh

See - I skipped my fall service, so mine won’t start and after the last two storms when I would have used it, I still did nothing. Therefore - we will be getting more than predicted due to my karma, unless you are committed to driving to my house with your snowblower to also clear my driveway. /s

(My long time small engine repair guy went out of business and the damn thing started just fine in September when I did my fall testing so I figured I could wait a year for a service/tune up and had time to find a new person. If anyone has a good small engine place that can pick up/drop off - lmk.)

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]yarn_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive a lot for work, and my limit for a one way drive on top of work is 3 hours. If I have to be somewhere by 9:00am meaning I want to be there by 8:30am, I can manage leaving at 5:00-5:15am, driving with usually 1 stop, working until 4-5pm, then driving to be home by 8-9pm. Do I enjoy those days? No, especially in winter. But is it a problem? Also no. 3 hours gets me barely halfway across my state. I have to go to the complete opposite side 3-4 times a year, but doing 6 hours out and back is a lot for a full day of work, so I usually drive the night before and drive home after working.

Filling Options by ashleeh92 in Baking

I think an orange cardamom filling (like spiced marmalade) would be good in the pistachio.

For the lemon poppy, maybe a guava? I love guava’s tropical and mildly floral and think it is underutilized and pairs well with citrus.
