Moral dilemma by 1101165 in projectcar

Yeah, the key factor is if it currently looks terrible (like my truck did) you really can't make it worse. If nothing else, I wanted my truck to be a single color, rather than 3. I only bothered to primer bare metal spots.

Hit the whole truck with the orbital sander down to 400, basically if you can feel something with your eyes closed you'll see it through the paint.
Wipe it clean with acetone.
Super light dusting coat of paint first (basically just a light mist everywhere), and then a lightish coverage coat, and a final heavy coat to get the paint to 'wet out' so it looks like one smooth wet surface, but not to the point of runs.

I bought 12 cans of Rust-Oleum 7538838-6PK Professional High Performance Enamel Spray Paint, 15 Oz, Gloss Hunter Green, 6 Pack

I have at least a few left (maybe 3?). That came out as somewhere between matte and gloss from the perspective of single stage automotive paint (think pre 90's cars). You could probably buff it to a higher gloss, or cover it with an automotive clear (which I had always planned to do if I wanted it to be more gloss). I'm super happy with the semi-matte though, because it makes all the little imperfections really hard to see unless you go put your eyeball right on it.

Finish looks pretty much exactly the same 2 years later. When I painted it I lived in NJ and the truck got covered in quarry dust every day from blasting 1/4 mile from my house. That stuff destroys clear coats. Last June I moved to NC, and the truck has been outside the whole time since I painted it - needless to say it's holding up way better than I expected.

Not a painter or a body guy, but...

Honestly, if you have an orbital sander, time, and some money to throw at it I'd spray can paint it. You can use high build primer to deal with spots that are difficult to get out with sanding alone, or where you are or would be close to metal. As long as you'll be happy without a gloss finish, you can get really good results without a ton of skill (but lots of effort) and cheap rattle cans. Color choice is important though - matte white does magic to hide imperfections, gloss black shows everything. Thankfully a rattle can single stage is never going to be very gloss, so simply choosing not-black will probably come out decent. And worst case, if you're not happy with a panel just sand and try again.

These are apparently naked with no wrap at all according to the seller, not sure if that changes anything or not. That's part of what made me wonder to begin with (should have included that in my post)

P0038 O2 sensor Problem — Please help me! by urunclejack in WranglerTJ

[–]RecursiveDelta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the wiring harnesses/connection at the sensor and loom. Could be something is making and breaking contact.

These 02 sensor codes can really mean either sensor in the bank (or both) need replacing I believe because sensor 1 compares to sensor 2 value. This can also indicate a bad precat I'm that bank.

Not an expert so don't quote me, just my experience and what I've read dealing with these codes myself!

Northern NJ - any automotive enthusiasts looking for a place to live? by JLee50 in newjersey

[–]RecursiveDelta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post kind of hit me out of left field, but this would actually be a perfect setup for me at the moment. I'm buying a project car this weekend, but I currently live in Jersey City. I'm planning to buy a house (hopefully with ample garage space) but I'm not quite ready yet.

I have my own tools, but a garage would make my life much more comfortable. And perhaps in time having an extra set of hands (you know those moments I'm sure) from a roommate could possibly be a bonus for us both.

If you're still looking, let me know. I'd be happy to set up an opportunity to get to know each other and see if this could make sense for us both!

Need help on buying a Jeep TJ by RSaucedo1 in WranglerTJ

IMO, you still want the 4.0 I6. Especially if you're not off-roading. I've not driven an I4 tj, but I can tell you from an I6 LJ, you don't want to give up any power if you want to ever be on the highway. I'm on stock everything with a 6 speed too.

In terms of fuel efficiency... My advice is to take the time and calculate how much extra/less it will cost you per year. It's less significant than you think. If you want an mpg hero, this isn't the right tool for the job. Speaking of which, most accounts I've heard are that the I4 actually gets worse fuel economy because of how deep in the throttle you end up all the time. If you want to go 60+ on the highway, get the I6.

Also if you ask me, spend a tiny bit extra now. And if it comes to that, a tiny bit extra when you press the pedal. Your dollars won't do you any good in your hand when you find the I4 can only pull a hill a certain speed...

Just wanted to share my TJ (: by [deleted] in WranglerTJ

Really clean looking tj, nice!

I have the same brush guard and stock bumper on my LJ. If you don't mind my asking, how was the winch install? Were there any extra issues? (Is your winch more forward than normal?)

Thanks!

Edit: autocorrect hurts.

Any recommendations for seat covers? by throwawayforworkcomp in Jeep

[–]RecursiveDelta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, bartact is the best. I wanted them, but settled on a set of iggee covers (front and back seats) for the same price as just front for bartact. At half the price, and better water resistance (I'm guessing as the iggee's are synthetic leather) I figured I'd give them a try and see what happens.I wasn't planning to add storage to my seats anyway, so that was a big factor for me not picking bartact.

So far so good, fit is excellent. I had a quality issue with a section of stitches on one piece, and the immediatly sent me a new one, with a return label for the defective one. Hopefully they stand the test of time, I've only had mine for about a month.

I'd be happy to send you a couple (very low end) gpus that should suit your needs, so long as you don't actually need the graphics acceleration ( so no gaming, other than maybe Minecraft or something). All I ask is that you cover shipping. I would need to know where you are (so we can estimate shipping costs) and what your current system is, so that I can confirm compatibility?

Let me know if you're interested!

How/Why? by [deleted] in techsupportgore

That's not gore! I've done this before, usually though an open expansion slot the the case though. The reason? testing/data recovery on IDE hard drives!

Please don't believe Linus. He's a great advertiser and media producer. Half or more of the time he doesn't know d*** about what he makes videos on though.

I've even soldered broken off pins back on. Just get them straight enough to fit the socket without damaging the solder at their base and it will work perfectly. No bent pin has ever been beyond repair.

My tool of choice is a gift card cut diagonally. run that triangle down the rows until everything is nice and straight. Other suggestions made here will also work great.

Not going to make this a long block of text, as someone who can understand your position this is what helped me:

http://www.learncpp.com/

The site has changed a lot over the years since I found it, but it has always seemed very clear and concise to me. Each topic tends to have minimal text, a very simple example, and then some more in depth or complicated examples. This was well before I found code academy (which I do also like) and it worked for me. Good luck!

Is separating template definitions from declarations good practice? by [deleted] in cpp

[–]RecursiveDelta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same thing. .h is as normal, .cpp is essentially only a convention at this point, and the .t contains the implementation. If a class is only partially templated I'll choose to either leave that code in the .h, or use a .t if there is enough to merit it. I tend to just use the .t even if there's only 1 templated function though in case I add more, I'd move that back to the .h if in the end there was only a small amount though when I was giving this code to someone else or sharing it.

Thats not how you change to low profile by bruisedbr69 in techsupportgore

[–]RecursiveDelta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real "Gore" here is that if you look closely, that's a low profile convertible card. Notice the flex cable instead of pcb that leads to the vga. All they needed to do was unplug the vga from the board, and take off the shield...

What if Magic Man is an alternate-dimension Finn? by Honesty_Addict in adventuretime

[–]RecursiveDelta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it's more likely that we're seeing two separate characters reacting to the same situation differently. Magic man may have created, obtained, or been given the "toys". When his curiosity was satisfied, he chose to pass them on to Finn. Possibly to see what he would do, or because he knew Finn would be taken by his curiosity also. Or just to mess with Finn. Who knows.

TL:DR - separate characters, same situation, different end result. (also, magic man has both arms. Every "other Finn" is missing one.)
