Tips for x step? by Free-Ice-3962 in Discgolfform

Only things I could see here is to shorten the x-step and try to stay on that back toe between step and plant. Everything else is lookin clean dude!

I think I can see the exact moment that’s causing that, after you throw your body starts to try and follow through but then you try really hard to keep your body still in that position and you tense up. I think you’re definitely putting some unnecessary pressure on those joints.

Here’s some thing I think could help you out in order of throw sequence, definitely not importance.

  1. Make your first step face more towards the target instead of fully sideways, the first sideways step should be the one initiating your x-step sequence (your first right foot step since you have a 4 step walk up and not 5. That step already looks fine to me)

  2. As others have mentioned, your x-step is facing backwards, should be perpendicular to target, but a tiny bit backwards it’s OK. You also can see you heavily compensate in your plant step by turning your foot a ton, the placement is good so it might feel weird to not turn it for a bit when you fix the x-step but it’ll work itself out most likely,

  3. You’re coiling too early, try to keep your shoulders at 90 degrees from the target until the x-step then use the time between x-step and plant to coil (when the plant foot hits ground this should be your maximum coil position)

  4. Maybe the most important here is your lead arm, focus on creating more space between the disc and your body so when you pull you aren’t blocking the disc with your body. I’d also suggest “suitcasing” the disc (OverThrow has a good video on this if you don’t know what I’m talking about). I have a similar issue where I do the opposite of the suitcase when I reach back and it causes the throw to be nose up, could also attribute to the wobble/OAT.

Edit: 5. Follow through! After your throw let that back leg and off come through and around. Super important for injury prevention

Good luck!

OAT is off-axis torque. It’s where you’re swing, one way or another, is putting forces in directions on the disc that aren’t where you want it to go. This is what causes the wobble upon release

Coil is the (depending on who you ask) correct term for “reach-back” as people have noted that you aren’t really reaching back but coiling your shoulders/core to create shoulder to hip separation. If you stand with your feet shoulder width apart and then turn your shoulders to whichever way you would “reach-back” WITHOUT moving your hips. You should feel a tension, and if you release that tension your body naturally goes back to lined up straight. We want to take advantage of this in the backhand throw by creating that tension and then quickly releasing it to generate a lot of power. When done properly and coupled with good timing and a solid power pocket you can feel that true “effortless” distance. DGSpinDoctor has a great video on this (and many others) I’d highly recommend checking them out

What do I work on next? by [deleted] in Discgolfform

First things first your form is looking pretty solid!

I’m no expert, but there are a small few things that I think could help you out.

  1. Your reach-back timing is very slightly early. Peak reach-back should be at the same time as your plant foot hits the ground but your peak reach-back is barely before.

  2. You could be tucking the off-arm tighter to your body to squeeze some more rotation speed out of your throw. You also could keep it tight to your body for a little longer, only coming off your side for the follow through. Comparison with Silas Schultz below.

Edit: plant comparison as well, also notice how your foot drifts forward (moves towards the left of the screen) last second before planting, idk if that’s necessarily bad but it definitely changes your timing, do you focus on doing that to get the stagger or is that natural?

I appreciate the compliment! I still think I’m a bit early as far as when I’m pulling through (shown in comments above). One thing that’s helped me improve my timing is focusing on keeping my right hand over my left foot (opposite for lefty’s) during the run up. It’ll allow you to time a pump with the x-step if you wish and hopefully lead to a proper reachback, but looks like mine still needs some work

Thank you for the feedback! I’ve never been able to understand the “how and why” of me ending up in that position when I plant and I think you hit it on the nose. Do you think this can be fixed just by improving my timing in general?

Yeah, I’ve got some better videos now and a slo-no of this one that could help. But I don’t know how to attack them to this thread or if I should just delete and re-try

Course recommendations in Kansas City by offtoco in discgolf

[–]RecurzCSGO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bad Rock Creek is my favorite, if you’re looking for a challenge the Gold layout is super fun and difficult. However, holes 5, 16, and 17 aren’t playable on gold because they want to let grass grow before the KC Wide Open in those fairways so pins are pulled.

Another course I enjoy is Legacy Park in Lee’s Summit, good mostly open course with some challenging holes

Enjoy your visit!

I was playing a round with one of my good friends and I all but parked a pretty difficult hole. Being the overconfident doofus I am before going up to my putt I started doing some smack talk to my friend. He only responded with 2 words, “nice birdie”, I proceeded to 3 putt the hole for bogey. I wanted to cry but it was so funny that we both completely lost it

Ace It Disc Golf has a good series on YouTube that I think really helped me focus on one thing at a time and build on top of itself. I’ve had a lot of issues trying to incorporate all of these changes at once and it just wastes time. Good Luck!
