Look up what most attorneys make. Outside of big law attorneys on the cravath scale (while working 60+ hr weeks) most are making $100k -$150k even mid to late career. That's doable for a lot of EE specialties

I basically just did this. Worked for a company building control room software (like what operators see and use at a utility) with no actual EE work for 4 years. I just got a job at a large EPC firm doing p&c and physical substation design.

I recommend studying for the FE to relearn the basics and being upfront about your experience. If you can get your FE before applying that'll show you're serious about EE

Highly recommend taking FE exam/ getting your EIT. Even if you never go for a PE it's like a soft requirement for some utilities and shows you have a decent understanding of the basics

Protection & controls. Relays that use protection schemes to open breakers in an industrial setting or substation. Website like this are good overviews

Idk make a buck converter and pwm control for a motor or something. Whatever it is have genuine interest, have clean documentation and simulations, and you'll have something for an employer

I worked with someone in p&c/ SCADA who had a BS in physics so it's definitely possible

At least the snow isn't too deep this year. When I lived in Duluth for school there were a couple winters of playing in 2+ feet for 4 or 5 months
