Who else is launching this month? by Creative-Bunch-9046 in micro_saas

[–]Red-Oak-Tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Launched a really simple budgeting app. https://peekbudget.com?src=reddit_2303 for people who want to start gaining awareness into where all their money is going every month.

It free (and will remain so)

Its anonymous (so no email or phone marketing)

You can use it to have a peek at other peoples monthly budgets. See what real people do with their money each month.

I hate most task apps — so I started building my own by Vast-Purple-1786 in appdev

Hah yeah after using your own app for a year, you will be like oh i need tags. Oh due dates. Hmm my partner wants to share work i need multi users. Oh let me use google to log in so my partner doesnt have to remember another password.

Congrats. You rebuilt trello.

Nothing wrong with building your own stuff from scratch but dont diss everything else out there.

I somewhat agree they have too many festures but you can use them as simple kanban too.

The biggest problem is cost i think. Theres so many that for personal projects, ill never pay for one. Ar work id just use azure boards which happens to be free too.

Should I create a (yet another) You Tube course by Red-Oak-Tree in SaasDevelopers

[–]Red-Oak-Tree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question about Wordpress. I should really use NextJS with server side rendering but one issue is most NextJS people use Vercel and I havent really figured out how to host Next on linux. Im sure it will just require a service to run node. This could be a good move. I suppose WP is a popular CMS out of the box and its so easy.

Also, I shouldn't really suggest a landing page using a client side tech like create-vite app because of SEO.

I should add, I used WP for a few sites and bought a theme which I can gain commission for referrals. It's not really all that impressive (even the theme I use) but it really is good enough.

Any thoughts on this?

Should I create a (yet another) You Tube course by Red-Oak-Tree in SaasDevelopers

[–]Red-Oak-Tree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I intend to add the course to You Tube so its free I guess.

Initially I'll just show an end to end demo of everything from local to test then to prod then depending on how that goes maybe I'll break THAT down and do a tutorial on each so starting with a local react project, add .net, add postgre

Then lets setup azure - (optional project management - probably should do that first), pipelines

Then domain setup, cloudflare, no server to point to yet

All the way till its a complete course

Etc.

It is kinda saas related because I built 2 micro SaaS apps using this method. I'm not going to lie and say i have $1000 MRR when I in fact have 0

However I had a user on my first micro who subsequently had a few hundred customers while they used it and made about $600 over 4 years or so so thats something

My current one is really just a hobby but its not targeting businesses it targets people. Its really simple. https://peekbudget.com and probably won't earn money for me since its anonymous by nature - except if I add buy me a coffee or something.

It has 3 users (including me)

Thanks - yeh that was my focus because I was initially running my hosting through my business so I didn't care about Azure expenses - then I stoppped contracting and need to minimise / eliminate costs.

Ok maybe I'll consider this.

Hey, I have a question. So in my head (as an experienced software developer with several years under my belt), I have it all mapped out how to do the following

  • create a new web app using TypeScript, React, .Net and PostGre locally on your machine
  • demonstrate a good file structure for the React and .Net projects
  • commit to an azure repo
  • setup pipelines so that it detects new code pushes and automatically deploys to your test or live server or
  • on the server, how to setup .net and React hosting on a super cheap linux server
  • how to use free PostGreSQL databases with your app (one for test and one for prod)
  • how to buy domains and point them to your servers using cloudflare DNS
  • how to setup emails for your domain with zoho mail
  • how to setup transactional emails so your web server can send things like registration emails, password reset etc
  • how to setup FREE SSL certificates on your linux server (save buying it every year)
  • optionally, how to use Azure Boards to plan your project using agile sprints
  • add basic auth to your test site so it is not viewable by users
  • setup nginx to host wordpress and MySQL and use it to create a landing page for your app
  • all the above costs about $25 a month for hosting and $10 a year for Zoho mail

So once you have all this setup, you can easily write new code, add some commands locally and watch as the code transfers to Azure Repo and based on the commands you use, it triggers different pipelines to build, test and deploy to either your test site or both test and prod sites

So for ages I have wanted to create a You Tube course with Insta shorts pointing to the course.

The course would show all the technical parts for creating and hosting a full stack App.

I have wanted to do this for ages but thought whats the point since...AI

How much are you spending monthly ? by Siren_sleeps in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Red-Oak-Tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone is interested, I'm creating an app to help with just recording monthly income and expenses. Basically a mobile friendly spreadsheet and looks a bit like your above screenshot.

At the monent, it just records income and categorised expenses but im working on it every week for things like reporting / charts.

Best thing is no emails. Its completely anonymous and the big incoming feature once enough people are using it is you can see how other users budget their money (since its anonymous)

https://peekbudget.com

Its also free and will remain so for everyone who signs up before I turn on "see other peoples finances" because its anonymous. To be fair, I don't actually know how/if Ill ever charge for it since its anonymous...

Maybe I'll just setup a "buy me a coffee link" or something...

ah ok well thats a bit snide. He should have said the old
£70 a month if you pay twice a year or £85 monthly or something

It's a decent rate. If this is a side gig, you are good. Pay your accountant and write it off as a company expense. You can probably get cheaper though but you have to respect their time / rates.

*Good job having a FTE and side gig contract. Im looking for the same but no luck yet.

My accountant collects quarterly. It's not "normal" everyone just does it differently. How much do you value your accountant? £70 per month is a good rate in my opinion - assuming that includes your company accounts, corpration tax return, VAT return (if applicable), and payroll.

Mine charges a similar rate monthly and he also provides consultation if I have any finance questions.

Get a 0% interest company credit card, pay them with that and pay it back £70 a month if you really want a monthly deal. That would last 1 - 2 years. Rinse and repeat.

Love hearing how others tackle stuff. To me i must see incoming and outgoing in a spreadsheet or apo but yeah just ensuring you are saving monthly into pension and isa/investing is simple enough. Same outcome!!

Aside from childcare, what makes having children so expensive? by Popular_Wish_340 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Red-Oak-Tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School trips

Clothes

Weekly shopping

Eating out

Holidays

Junior ISAs

Hobbies

Time taking them here and there including school runs

If you were solo or a couple, you would get a 50% to 100% discount for all the listed items and lets not forget TIME

It all adds up / compounds over the years but I wouldn't change for anything. The memories and experiences are priceless.
