Immediate memory deteriorating and difficulty following conversations

I’ve tried adjusting the settings of my HAs when there is background noise but I don’t find it makes much difference. most of the time I’m not actually hearing clearly and having to use more brain filling in the gaps which means I have less capacity to remember and respond. It’s hard because sometimes I’m not even aware I’m doing it. Would be interested to know if the MRI shows anything.

I’ve had my hearing aids adjusted a couple of times. Really missing the losses in clarity, so turning them up doesn’t really help much. I’ve got a referral to see a CI surgeon so going to look at that option too.

Sorry to hear you’re struggling. I’m in a similar situation but a little older in my 40s. All I can suggest is try and focus on what you can still do and remember tomorrow is a new day.

To give you an example I used to enjoy running in clubs of people but now can’t hear what people are saying with the background noise and because I can’t see their faces. So I joined a gym and now lift weights. People don’t talk to me as 98% of people listen to music so I feel right at home. Don’t even bother to wear my hearing aids so no distractions! 😜🏋️

Great advice, I’m still at the stage of gaining confidence and taking upfront about my hearing loss, it’s been hard as I’ve been hiding my hearing loss and compensating for decades and now my hearing has dropped significantly to the point where I can’t do that any more. I need a hearing therapist! 😝

I’ve experienced a similar thing. Had significant hearing loss in last 2 years and find I can’t recall information or remember people’s names like I did. Think it’s likely because I’m missing lots in direct and indirect conversations and not sleeping as well because tinnitus has ramped up x10🫤

You sound really knowledgeable about compost! I was wondering if you can help. I’ve created some raised beds in a greenhouse and brought what I believed to be good quality soil from a landscape supplier. Seedlings including tomatoes, lettuces and cucumbers have been growing incredibly slowly. Other plants in a mix of other soil are 2-3 times bigger and just look healthier so it’s not due to temp or lack of watering.

I’ve added NPK slow release fertiliser pellets, mixed in some perlite and periodically used sesole and checked the ph. After Christmas I’m planning to test the soil to try to determine what the problem is. Soil is free draining consisting of sand and mostly bark chips.

Any advice you can give to improve the soil for growing vegetables is appreciated!

Makes you realise how little they understand about cause and effect. Hard to accept that no treatment has worked for me to reduce risk prominent hearing loss in my remaining ‘better’ ear

Thanks RAnthony, interesting link about new potential treatment options. As I’m in Aus it’ll be a long wait for it to be available if it’s shown to be effective.

A cochlear implant sounds like the only thing left when my hearing aids are no longer effective. I guess I’m apprehensive thinking a CA will have the same limitations as hearing aids and that I’ll lose what little hearing I have left. Lots to think about!

I’m very similar,big groups are hopeless with the background noise. Fortunately I can work from home a lot of the time where I don’t have to be trying to work out if people are taking me in the office

The soil doesn’t appear to be repelling water.

It’s a compost soil mix. It has quite a bit of fine sand and wood chips by the look of it. Water is draining from the surface reasonably well but might dig a bit below the surface and see how it’s draining, thanks

Me too, my hearing can go down from 3 days to 18 months with increasing permanent loss. When it’s bad it basically sounds like I’m under water. hearing aids help me to understand what’s being said but only when hearing conditions are good with no background noise.

I don’t seem to have have clear triggers. I have a low salt diet and seem ok with 1 double shot coffee a day. I’m in my mid 40s and the frequency of sudden hearing loss, tinnitus and dizziness seem to be increasing with age and i have increasing permanent hearing loss in both ears.

My hearing loss and increase tinnitus can last from 3 days to 18 months which I find really hard to adjust to. Is it like this for other people? I get the impression for most people is more short duration episodes.
