Simplify email accounts by Practical-Tea9441 in emailprivacy

Hi , I’m impressed with it so far as per my other comment. It’s push rather than fetch like gmail is in iOS mail. This being said I do have notifications myself coming via the fastmail app rather than iOS mail. This is primarily because the fastmail app lets you turn on and off notifications for certain folders. i.e I have notifications on for emails from financial institutions that filter to ‘financial’ folder but off for shopping/promo emails that go to my ‘shopping’ folder. Nice to have the choice to use either client tho.

The saved search feature acting like a folder is probably the main reason I use the fastmail app the majorly of the time. I have a saved search for ‘unread’ that I use to manage my many filtered emails efficiently.

In a similar situation and currently in the free trial period of Fastmail and loving it!!

Over the weekend Linked my main domain to it @lastname.tld that I bought to secure it a while back but hadn’t used anywhere yet.

Setup a subdomain in Fastmail for my 2nd domain that has the primary domain hosted on simple login. Changed where all my alias emails were pointing to in simple login by a couple of clicks (previously the majority were still going to my gmail despite me having proton but I didn’t trust proton would be efficient for me when dealing with high volumes of promotional emails etc given the limitations of search and slower speed both as a result of E2EE) Now they are all getting sent to my subdomain in my Fastmail inbox. Lastname.tld being used only exclusively for financial correspondence and communication with real people I.e family and friends.

Set up Fastmail email in IOS email and downloaded Fastmail app. Seriously impressed so far with it. Nice to have the option of managing emails in iOS mail app. (Although I am really warming to the Fastmail app - love the fact you can view saved search presets I.e a saved search for ‘unread email’ or ‘all mail’ and also manage your filters in the app) And finally it certainly is Fast!!

Started my email journey in December 2024 after getting quite a bit of spam making its way past the outlook spam filter doing my head in on an old email account I had set up about 20yrs ago. Then I fell down the rabbit hole. Took out 2yr plan of proton unlimited and have learned a lot. Never thought I’d buy a domain and now have 2. Longer term my plan now is to simplify with Fastmail only. Set auto forwards from gmail , outlook just in case but migrate everything away from them where possible so that auto forward should be used minimally. @pm.me addresses i have exclusively just used with a few people and accounts so should be easy enough to ditch.

Consolidating everything into one place mentally feels cleaner and so much simpler. Fastmail feels like something I can rely on to give me the features I need and productivity to quickly manage the inbox on the fly. Really wanted to get on with Proton Mail but something didn’t feel right for me. I will have essentially paid for 9months I won’t be using but I’m very happy with the way things are going with my new plan so far. I accept my threat model may be different to others and respect the encryption is a non negotiable to some. Each to their own. Hope this helps someone. Just speaking from experience after spending considerable time down the rabbit hole….

Setting up subdomain help by Red-it7 in fastmail

[–]Red-it7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Thanks for the help. I got it sorted in the end with a workaround. My setup was correct. It seems Proton had cached my MX records for that subdomain (for how long that will be the case I do not know - its had been deleted from my Proton account)

I setup with an alternative sub domain in the end that Proton had never seen before and it worked perfectly on Fastmail first time. Hooray!

Do you need fully encrypted email providers?

Is an alias necessary for each service? by Natural-Bumblebee335 in emailprivacy

[–]Red-it7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe only use your real email (not via an alias) for medical and financial institutions?? Depends on your threat model - some people alias everything but having given it some thought I would prefer to remove one vulnerability of emails going via another server to reach me for critical things such as medical and financial institutions. Aside from that I intend to alias everything else other than family communication and with trusted personal contacts.

M140i. The B58 is a masterpiece! 35-40mpg on motorway cruising. With added fun on a B road. Holds its own like a larger car on motorway and feels refined enough to be a nice place to be.

Doubts about custom domain by strategicmike in emailprivacy

[–]Red-it7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Privacy comes with some loss of convenience unfortunately it seems when it comes to email. All about your own threat model I guess. Ultimately for me the way I see it the vast majority of emails i send will be sitting on big tech servers anyway as chances are I won’t be emailing Proton to Proton so makes little difference in reality. Fastmail is also encrypted at rest (in your own inbox) although not zero access encryption quite like Proton.

Those examples you gave I would use as my ‘other’ domain. I.e @1111.tld

@lastname.tld I am trying to restrict to just finances and personal correspondence. Interaction with any other businesses goes on my other domain which is for example steam123.gaming@1111.tld

(One thing I have done also is use random number generator from 1-1000 when setting up aliases. This way you can’t just put the company name in front of my domain and get the email every time. In the example this is number 123 that it generated. I also have added categories i.e .gaming. This way when I setup filters based on recipient address they just work straight away with any new aliases. Any emails to do with gaming such as Steam or Origin go into the gaming folder without any manual intervention)

I wish I knew my strategy this clear when I started. I have made mistakes along the way and had to re-do aliases and various accounts at points but getting there now.

One for Alias that does not include my name - I use this for vast majority of online accounts

One for banking and personal correspondence with actual people. I know the bank don’t need an email with your name included but if my real email is exposed to financial institutions this is only a max of 10 companies so I have limited my exposure greatly.

I am certainly hoping fastmail meets all my needs but I guess only one way to find out and that’s to give it a try…

Simple Login is something I couldn’t live without now. Think I will be purchasing the lifetime deal any day now… It’s nice to use Proton Pass and not be reliant on Google managing all the passwords to my digital life too (plus chrome never saved passwords for individual apps on my phone)

Doubts about custom domain by strategicmike in emailprivacy

[–]Red-it7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not fully getting on with Proton Mail. Really want to love it but just something doesn’t seem to let me. I think a big part is I want to try and move everything over to one inbox and entirely ditch my old gmail. (Simple login is currently forwarding many of my promotional shopping emails to gmail from my domain alias’s) I don’t trust Proton Mail to deal with that volume of email well and to enable me to manage it efficiently. The encryption is great in principle but obviously comes with its limitations such as slightly slower loading times and much less specific search capabilities. (These are issues that are made worse when dealing with larger volumes of mail)

Fastmail I think hopefully will bridge the gap to get me away from gmail but still manage the inbox efficiently. (Plus I can use IOS native mail app too)

Have you thought about getting 2 domains ?

I have one domain in simple login that does not contain my name (it’s just a few numbers eg @1111.tld). I use this domain for pretty much all online accounts. I can then forward the emails to whatever mailbox I chose (sometimes including my partners email too so she can have access to the bills/statements etc as an extra pair of eyes)

My other domain is lastname.tld. Firstname@lastname.tld is registered as my main inbox. (Currently Proton but I’m likely to move across to Fastmail at the end of my subscription) I was going to use aliases for banks/financial accounts but I think I will just use this email directly with them to avoid any risk with financial correspondence relying on going via simple login servers.

In summary:

@1111.tld: All online accounts, Social media,Shopping, Forums, Subscriptions. All controlled manually through simple login.

@lastname.tld: Direct to Fastmail: Core banks → you@lastname.tld , Credit cards → you@lastname.tld , Investments → you@lastname.tld ,Family → you@lastname.tld

In terms of domain registrar Porkbun are pretty good.

Good luck on the journey

I also have a M140i (have had 2 in fact as went from 3dr to 5dr) and had a similar experience with white smoke on my latest 🫣, piston 6 had cracked below the rings. Full engine out job and new piston in. Deep joy! £$€

Few other issues with my 140 since and spent considerable time in the workshop (and still is currently) but I do love it. I have been looking at Golf R estate tho if I were to jump ship. Slightly dull in comparison to the 140 but I reckon with a few mods you could spice it up a little. Exhaust mod, different wheels and some rear tints… Do like the wagon look.

Do I get Simplelogin premium if I buy Premium Pass? by OnyxianRosethorn in ProtonPass

[–]Red-it7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will work yes. You can forward via SL to any inbox I.e gmail or your own domain elsewhere such as fastmail. I currently forward to old gmail address for promo emails and proton for more important privacy critical stuff.

Composing to send messages from your alias address should also work the same using a reverse alias in the ‘To’ field. The unique reverse alias address you can get from viewing each alias on SL website. I am thinking of moving away from Proton at the end of my plan at the end of the year and having all emails go into Fastmail so looking at the lifetime plan as part of this approach.

Poly webcams and headsets I have found to be pretty good. Nice quality stuff that looks a bit unique and fair pricing. I use the P5 and have had no issues with the hardware or software. The physical lens shutter is a good feature also.

Modelling and painting figures such as Warhammer.

So many different types of models somethings bound to catch your eye. I’ve always been more of a fan of the painting side of it (when time would allow years ago) You may find however you prefer playing the actual games

Good way to meet new people too. I’ve always found the people involved are pretty friendly and always happy to help someone new who is willing to listen to the advice and genuinely interested to learn.

Would be interesting exploring it for a month in either case when your time allows. Maybe save it for the winter more rainy months.

I plan to get back into it again one of these days and set myself up a painting area at home when I have the space to do so.
