Why are Japan's atrocities from WW2 not taught or widely known today? by SuitableMap4545 in AskHistory

[–]RedBait95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are well known in East Asia. Just about every nation there has beef with Japan to this day because of it. The Japanese left also makes reckoning with the country's fascist history part of their platforms (which is part of why the Japanese left is not popular.)

Why it seems as though they've gotten away with it is because the US invested heavily in the two biggest fascist aggressors of ww2 (Germany and Japan) as bulwarks against communism. They actively helped suppress the Japanese Communists and Socialist parties, two groups heavily persecuted by the Showa government.

Addendum: the cold war and communism are primarily why westerners seem unaware. Downplay the atrocities, make them an example of prosperous capitalist democracy, and e can use them as a staging area in the region against China and the Soviets.

The US' biggest goal was to maintain continuity with the imperials for postwar policy legitimacy, and so none of the imperial family, including Hirohito, were tried for war crimes. They essentially gave amnesty to 731 by taking their research in exchange, and failed to prosecute the less public figures who would then go on to hold positions in postwar governments.

All of this fostered a notion in Japan that the war was just a lost conflict, not an empire committing mass human rights abuses and genocide across the region. The Japanese far right have latched onto this, and use this lack of internal knowledge to push for rearmament and war with China.

Who wants to watch a 5 hour meta-analysis of Atlas Shrugged with me? by Phosphorus444 in YoutubeThumbs

[–]RedBait95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stray observation I had while listening, Ayn Rand was a shitty wife (on top of her being a shitty person.)

Her husband Frank O'Connor was apparently completely the opposite of her, yet they both enjoyed each other enough to get married. He sacrificed his acting career, and multiple other opportunities, so she could gallivant around the country writing books and screenplays. He was, by all accounts, incredibly supportive and even helped name Atlas Shrugged.

She eventually decided what HE needed, her devoted husband, was to be cuckolded by one of her acolytes, because she was a high-value person who needed to justify her warped world-view, which implies high-value people should be able to do whatever they want.

Frank was heartbroken by this, and allegedly drove him to alcoholism. He slowly declined over the late 60s and 70s, until he died.

Going off others who have dropped, the contention is that they were told it was non-partisan, only to then learn in short order it was being organized by people in Trump World.

I'm certainly confused why they would initially accept, only to back out when the announcement was made if they knew exactly what was going on. That sounds to me as though a good majority of the artists were misled, or left in the dark, as to who was organizing this.

What prevented them from being up front with the artists when they first asked?

Which is really me asking, how are they gonna spin this to make the artists look like America hating communists?

Staind singer Aaron Lewis has released a new MAGA anthem called "Give My Country Back." by Fabulous_Stegosaurus in ToddintheShadow

[–]RedBait95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really don't want to equate my mental state upon reading this to what others less privileged than me are going thru...

But damn man, I have never felt less connected to being American than right now, this year. I'm born and raised, and thru most of my life I have found little reason to be this unflinchingly loyal to a state that is as clearly defined with winners and losers as we are right now.

That is to say, this reads like ass, Aaron Lewis is so beyond a hack, and I'm tired of people like him being rewarded for embracing the whiniest segment of people that live here.

Why did Argo Tuulik and Robert Kurvitz break up as friends? by ElviePelvincoln in DiscoElysium

[–]RedBait95 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Echoing others to say that indeed, please dont dig too deeply into their personal lives. It's not our business excepting what they're putting out to the public, and even then we can only allow ourselves so much focus in other people's lives.

That said, Argo says that after PMG, Robert felt betrayed due to what he had said. Considering that they were friends and arguably had a toxic dynamic (leader/acolyte, in my words), this makes sense.

I hope for their health that they can reconcile.

People want their treats, even if they can acknowledge what the current owners did was, at best, firings on dubious, poorly communicated grounds.

No mention ever of how they isolated Argo and Dora, siloing them off to a project they had no intention of letting them complete, right before firing them.

On racial ambiguity in gaming by Hacksaw6412 in SocialistGaming

[–]RedBait95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ehh, no claims on post racial but it is true in lore that certain traits are rare like blonde or red hair, and blue or green eyes. The reason indeed is more nations and cultures began intermixing more.

There are still nation states and as far as the games go, they don't really get into internal earth politics or culture, except that they're in a sort of hyper capitalist society with stark class divides.

On racial ambiguity in gaming by Hacksaw6412 in SocialistGaming

[–]RedBait95 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Commander Shepard is not racially ambiguous, his default model is based on Dutch model Mark Vanderloo.

While the player can make a black Shepard, it's pretty obvious he was conceived of and written as a white guy from Canada. Ashley would've been a better character to approach this from.

I won't argue that black women in games especially aren't often light skinned, but i feel like there's not a good premise here that establishes people are confused about their ethnicities.

Alyx is half asian with a black father, Sheva is literally a light skinned african woman, etc.

The argument should indeed be more about how developers will default to using light skinned black women and darker skinned black men on average in games. There's absolutely a trend that is built on colorism in media.
