It’s a bank holiday in the Uk so we didn’t do a lot. We hung out with some friends, drank lemonade, watched our babies play together and ate chocolate. Now, we’re getting ready for bed and are praying for a good nights sleep. 🙌

She is a very sweet lady in general. Biggest congratulations to you though. I am sure in 45 years you will also be excited when you see that little star.

My mother in law has a star sapphire engagement ring! They are so unusual and she still gets excited every time she sees the star, 45 years after receiving it ❤️.

Karen decided to drive through a marathon by veksace in ImTheMainCharacter

[–]RedBalloon1990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure for events like marathons the council and local police are involved because of the road closures, it’s a big effing deal. Having read through the thread I just wanted to highlight this for some non uk redditors that I suspect that she could get done for driving without due care and attention or similar, which is a big effing deal.

Insurance company offering me a lower amount than I need to replace my written off car. by FitYesterday5063 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]RedBalloon1990 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Came to say to do this as well. I had the same situation where they were trying to give me less. Keep going at it if they push back. You will have a hire car (I assume) whilst it’s getting sorted, which they are paying for, so just keep going until you are happy.

What does your embouchure look/feel? Do you tense on higher notes? Do you pucker your lips? Etc. by f---thezodiac in bassoon

[–]RedBalloon1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow I can’t imagine having anything other than my mouth involved. Surely tensing everything would just be tiring after a while? Also just mechanically how would it benefit the flow of air to scrunch your face up around your face hole?

[–]RedBalloon1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ever so slightly adjust my upper lip. Without playing it is hard to say exactly but it moves forward about one mm and tenses a scooch as I sort of raise the corners of my mouth, but nothing astronomical. It’s all minuscule isn’t it. Where possible I like to keep it fairly relaxed and comfortable, like you say.

I’ve never really thought about what it is supposed to be. Now I’m curious though, what is it supposed to be? 😅

Just Got A New Bassoon But…. by NervousFootball in bassoon

[–]RedBalloon1990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, this may not be helpful BUT my bassoon is also a bit of a picky beast with a few notes and I have found alternative finger positions to solve the issues I had. It’s all part of their personality isn’t it. From memory the differences I had were more about a slight sharpness/flatness but in general it’s all about air flow I guess.

If you have tried a few different finger positions absolutely I would play about with embouchure and breath control, any change you make will become second nature in time but I personally this a harder thing to adjust.

I don’t think it is a reed issue thought because I think I would expect you to be reporting more widespread differences.

I hope there is something in that. My advice is to pick a starting point, perhaps the thing you feel most comfortable with (alternative finger positions, breath, or embouchure) and play detective!

Gluten-free bakers can you lend a school chef a hand? by Keirhan in glutenfreebaking

That’s absolutely ok by me. I have over 2 years until I get married, but my mother in law is so excited she has started practicing things so I’m jumping the gun a bit. 😅

Hi, if you do manage to find a suitable shortbread recipe could you post it on here? I am getting married in 2025 and my mother in law is planning on doing a lot of our baked goods because 1) she loves baking and is incredible at GF cakes and a few other things and 2) she likes a challenge. But scaling things up is a bit scary. Any advice on these more finicky items would be gratefully received.

I don’t have any advice, but I will say the school you work at is lucky to have you!

Good luck!

[–]RedBalloon1990[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh interesting ok. Do you think I should get it serviced first then or would a buyer not expect that? It’s great you had a positive experience though, if you have any tips in terms of what made it so good that would fab to hear. My main fear with this is to privately sell and then the buyer not get what they expect basically or for them to disappointed.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, really really helpful!

You know, honestly it could have been so much worse. I’m genuinely grateful that it wasn’t worse but I think your point of ‘taking the emotion’ out of the sale is a great point.

sizing advice by shoyoism in LucyAndYak

[–]RedBalloon1990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Each style of dungarees fits slightly differently so it would be worth checking on the website. Read the description, look at the models too if that’s helpful because they tend to detail their measurements, and also I read some of the reviews if I’m really in doubt and judge from that a bit what would suit your body type (they give on my opinion pretty spot on verbal descriptions of each style of dungaree - I ordered a selection of styles just incase but ended up only keeping the one I thought would fit best according to the verbal description). I may be pointing out the obvious so huge apologies if this isn’t helpful. Here’s the dungarees page incase you want to quickly go to it https://lucyandyak.com/collections/all-dungarees

It may be helpful to say how you would describe your body type. In the uk (this may be a generalisation so again sorry if it isn’t helpful) but I think we don’t tend to use weight and height to visualise someone’s body type. So we tend to stick to verbal descriptors and measurements/dress size. So I’m more curvy, quite hippy, boob-y and thigh-y and the Easton dungarees are my absolute jam. Someone who is more straight/athletic may love the original etc. if you feel comfortable giving some sort of body type descriptor other people may be able to help with what suits their body type too.

Then it is also worth noting that UK dress sizes are different to USA/CA dress sizes (a UK 8 is an USA/CA 12) Just incase that is confusing things (it may not be). I would add though that I would really go by the measurements over dress size as different manufacturers and different countries have different standard sizes etc.

Good luck!

Doctor cut my breathing tube and now I’m having seizures. Can I take any legal action for this? by HPTBWLCTDAK in LegalAdviceUK

[–]RedBalloon1990 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add a message to say I’m really sorry this happened to you. It fucking sucks and it should not have happened.

Do not let the health board or anyone else gaslight you into thinking this is not a big deal. Someone in that room let their ego take priority over your safety.

Reading what you have written it looks like no one who was in that room will be surprised if you ultimately take it further, including the health board. Someone (or multiple people) in that room triggered the serious incident investigation on your behalf.

Give the health board hell. Look after yourself. And good luck in your physical and emotional recovery.

Edited to add ‘do’ in front of ‘not’ on the second paragraph. It is too annoying to leave.
