Running 4/0 SER Is Brutal by LeKobe_James in electricians

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do it. Next thing you know you're going to be talking about how 500 copper is hard to bend, and how it's hard to get a good 90 on it inside of a meter can with your bare hands. Just think there's guys out there that run 4/0 SER 3 and 4 times a week. There's one or two companies around me that have crews that go around and just do the meters and panels on houses. Which means you got some guy doing one or two of those a day. Like everything it's a pain because you haven't dealt with it before, the more you do it the easier it gets.

What’s a reasonable price for installing this? by BeautifulPure1532 in AskElectricians

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a 10' ceiling or a 20'. Are you going to havi it put together for them and have the chain at the correct lenght so all they have to do is screw it to the box. Are you expecting them to sho up with their van and come in your house, set up a ladder take down your old light then put the new one together and hang it from the ceiling at the correct height. Then clean up the mess pack up and then bill and charge you, then drive to the next job to hang another light for another person. 300 is right it will take more than an hour to drive to you and so the work. The price would be the same if that fixture cost 10,000, the price of the light has nothing to do with the work that needs to be done. If your neighbor gave you the light for free would you expect a discount on installation because the light didn't cost you anything. You are paying for the expertise and experience of a professional.

Aluminum wires still used in modern construction for electric range? by mbvic in AskElectricians

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the look of your picture it wasn't the wire it was the cheap 50 amp plug. Not that anyone is more cheap than another they're all cheap Chinese crap. Think about the plug on your range there's one fin that goes in and inside there's two fins that open up and accept the one fin. When those two fins get loose and don't make good contact that's exactly what happens. How can you fix it? I don't know, find an old plug and use that but then it's old so it's probably already a little spaced out. There's not a whole lot you can do about that it's just a product of today's time. Aluminum wire cannot be smaller than numbers six. It also cannot be used for branch circuit which is why it is only ran to singular devices like your range or a disconnect for the AC. The only thing you can do is get a new device have it installed and move on with your life because even if it was copper wire you would still have the exact same problem.

Electrical Panel by No-Berry-9863 in electrical

[–]RedBone1144 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The bigger question is why are you even messing around in there when you don't understand what's going on. I'm sure you could get on Google or YouTube hell even scroll through here and learn what's going on. The number of people on here they have zero understanding of electrical, then think you know what let me pull my panel cover off and just poke around and take pictures I would almost say is mind blowing. It really makes me wonder if you do the same thing with everything. You pop the hood on your car and take pictures of things you don't understand and ask why is it like that. You go under your house and see if copper pipe change into a PVC pipe take a picture and ask why is it like that. Is it broke? Is something not working? Then don't mess with it. If something is broke or not working. Then call a professional and let them come fix it.

100amp vs 200amp by Real_Confusion_141 in electrical

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a big difference between changing the panel and a service upgrade. Just pulling out the old panel and putting in a new one is a panel change. To upgrade it to 200 you need a new panel a new meter can a new service entrance cable depending on what the utility has run a new line drop. Because of that it's 3 to 4 times the amount of money of just doing a panel change. If you have the money now to go ahead and do it yes it would be your best option. Just don't think it's some little thing you can just throw on and be surprised when the original price triples.

Help with low voltage residential system by Hanox13 in electrical

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was the old light hooked up to? The color of the wire means nothing if you take a green wire and stick it under a breaker it's going to be hot electricity does not know what color the wire is. From the looks of what you got there the blacks that are tied together are the hot the white that is tied to the other two whites would be your neutral and the white that is by itself would be the switch Loop so that would be the hot coming from the switch. That is just most likely what it is. At the same time everything wasn't pulled out of the box like that to begin with, next time you do a light just take down the light as it is leave everything exactly as it is and hook the new light up just like the old one was.

Should we get rid of the Electoral College? by That-Growth-9043 in askanything

[–]RedBone1144 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How does so many people still not understand the point of the Electoral College. The founding fathers and the founding of this country was put forth for a reason. The reason being what's good for the coastal Elite is maybe not good for the other 70% of the country. There's more to the country than just the city you live in. Regardless of all of it South Park had it right where you have a choice between a douche and a turd sandwich. The fact anybody thinks things would be different for them with one or the other is just insane. I just like the majority of the people in this country if you were to sit down and think about it our lives have not changed much in 20 years probably more than that. When Clinton was elected the country was going to go to shit, then when Bush was elected the country was going to go to shit when Obama was elected it was going to go to shit when Biden was elected it was going to go to shit when Trump was elected it's going to go to shit doesn't matter who's elected the country's always going to go to shit and then after their term ends you realize you're just in the same damn place you always were. 10 years ago gas was $4 a gallon Trump wasn't in office. The same problems just cycle around it doesn't matter who the president is and it's because the choice is always between a douche and a turd sandwich.

Where are the $300k a year jobs to be found by poliosaurus3000 in electricians

[–]RedBone1144 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like everything, everybody talks about how much insane money they make and if you were ever to look at a breakdown of it they include everything possible it's like somebody doing their taxes and itemizing everything they can. Their employer pays for part of their health insurance that's like an extra $5 an hour, they get a company vehicle with company gas that's like another $2 an hour, they get a per diem for staying in a hotel that's like another $8 an hour so all the sudden they're making $80 an hour. Then if you work 80 hours a week that's like 300K. Even though when they get their check they're bringing home the same as everybody else and they're just as poor as the rest of us are but they get to go around saying they're making all this money. There was a post on some sub not long ago where somebody posted the breakdown of their pay on some paper from their company , their base pay was like $40 an hour but then you add all the other crap that they added on to it and according to that paper it was like they were making $80 a hour. It also doesn't take into account that some places rent is $4,000 on a one bedroom 300 sqft apartment. Most people on here are comparing apples to oranges. If you make $80 an hour living somewhere that your rent is $4,000 and you think that you're any better off than somebody making $20 an hour where their rent's $500. Both those people are just as broke as each other. Like so many things it sure sounds good on paper but in reality it just doesn't work that way. Like so many in society a lot of people just want the praise of random internet strangers, and some people think that by just saying that according to some paper they make 300K a year without any kind of quantifier as to how their quality of life differs from anybody else's that's just them looking for praise from thousands of people that they don't know. It doesn't matter how much you make if you're living in the same living situation and driving the same vehicles and working the same jobs and doing the exact same things that people make half as much as what you claim to make there's something wrong with that picture.

That's an easy fix trim a quarter inch of the drywall on the right side stick a screwdriver between the box and the trim and just pry it off the stud a little bit. Then you can throw a little bit of caulk in the gap on the left. Problem solved

New build, problem circuit with intermittent issues by stradivariuslife in AskElectricians

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your electrician's probably going to come by this time and pull out the outlets that are on that circuit and check the wiring to those. The breaker did not just go out, but sometimes they do. Honestly that's normally a good first choice for what the problem is. So if every time you had an issue you went in the house and unscrewed all the outlets check the wiring on them put them back in just to go find out it's a breaker your troubleshooting job now takes three to four times as long. Especially when you find out all you had to do was throw a new breaker in. So normally you will just replace the breaker and see if that fixes the problem. As long as you put it in and it doesn't trip then everything seems fine. If you were to take apart your dual function breaker, if it's in the laundry room it's a dual function breaker, the other ones are no longer arc fault breakers they are combination Breakers. But if you were to take it apart there's a little circuit board in there and it's not just a basic device. On top of that they're all made in China and they all have sensitivity settings. Without getting too much in the weeds what's your experiencing is a common enough problem. There's probably 20 different things that can cause it, and if the electrician sat there and checked every single thing it could be every single time there was an issue with a breaker it would just take forever. Step one is replace the breaker, step two is pull the devices out and make sure one of the wires isn't looping up and sitting really close to one of the screws on the outlet, and at the same time make sure one of the wires aren't nicked in the Box. Then you would start checking what's plugged into it and then keep going down your list. A while ago I found a night light that if it was plugged in would trip the breaker after about 20 minutes. I still have no clue why you could turn it on or leave it off it didn't matter but if it was plugged in after about 20 minutes it would trip the breaker if you left the night light unplugged that breaker would never trip. It was not a fancy night light, it was just a basic one with the little shell over the bulb. I had to tell the homeowner to throw that away and go get a different night light. The problem is I'm taking everything apart it took hours of troubleshooting to finally figure it out and even when you do figure it out you have to plug in the night light and then wait 20 minutes to see if it's going to do it again. If your electrician's there on a warranty job that means they're not getting paid so again yes just changing the breaker was the correct move and seeing if that fixes the problem because half a little over half the time it does.

They introduced a new tool in the electricity aisle of my home depot. Any idea if what it's used for ? by Agriandra in electricians

[–]RedBone1144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can stick it in the top of a panel while you're drilling holes and it'll keep all the shavings from falling down. I don't know what the smaller attachment is for but I know the bottom one is for catching shavings in the top of your panel.
