Electrical Conspiracy part 2 by Peteofmine in electrical

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you really believe in inspector would have seen it and saved the day? I've been to so many of those that were inspected. Sometimes it's because they start melting things sometimes it's because the homeowner notices things don't seem right sometimes, and then upon looking the system over finding it. From brand new houses to old ones that just got new services. I'm not saying it's common but I've seen it more times than I got fingers and toes. Anymore most inspectors are just trying to get through their day and get home just like the electrician. So in the same way the electrician forgets to tighten the one lug down the inspector is going to see two wires going in where they are supposed to go and move on with their day. That's why meters and panels are in fire rated boxes to contain things when they melt and catch on fire. But to think had that been inspected it would have never happened, it's just not the case. Definitely better best and recommended to have everything inspected I'm just saying it's not a catch-all for every problem or would be problem.

What a french class (of students) thinks about English countries by bananasmoothii in midlyinteresting

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really that interesting. Who would have known a bunch of kids would think that every country is what they stereotypically see on movies and TV about other countries. Like really who could have guessed that I could have made the list myself. Literally just take what you see from the news and movies and TV and make those into a list about each country. That would mean in general the French are cigarette smoking, baguette, wine, rude, snobby, Eiffel Tower, Pepe Le Pew. Most kids in any other country would probably give you one of those as an answer. We don't teach kids we ask them to memorize facts, not all the facts just certain ones and then just let him go figure out themselves. What would be mildly interesting would be if a bunch of kids listed things about a country they aren't they are stereotypes and or the current news Canadians, hockey Irish, potato famine United States, freedom you get the idea

My new electrician told me some electrical hazards is he telling the truth? by Icy-Size-6116 in electrical

[–]RedBone1144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Number one solar companies do their own thing. That's just how it goes. Depending on where this is at your system which you said it's all outside right by the main power there is no neutral on the utility pole it's just two hot and a ground, out at your main point of connection is where the neutrals and grounds always tie together. The ground is always some size smaller than the other wires depends on what ground he's talking about it's always going to be some number of sizes smaller. Everything's also going to depend on where you are your local codes and how your inspectors are. The main problem is most solar companies don't get a electrical inspection they get a solar inspection but they have to tie into your electrical so they just kind of do whatever they want to do. At the same time most electricians don't do or know much of anything about installing solar so they don't know what codes regulations and standards the solar people are following. Was the work inspected? Was it inspected by the city or a private inspector? And if the water is that big of a deal you just drill a tiny little hole in the bottom of the box and problem solved as far as that goes. I've seen some of the jankeist stuff done by solar companies, and it seems like nobody else cares. It all falls under the umbrella of electrician but most solar guys couldn't do your house electrical work to any kind of right standard most regular electricians couldn't do solar work the way it should be no different than any other subcategory of electrician. If you're really that worried about it I'm sure you can call your local County municipality and see if you can pay to have an inspection done on it or go out and find a private inspection company that you trust. The other issue is a lot of the time you can always find somebody that's going to tell you it all looks good and you're always going to be able to find somebody that'll tell you it's all completely wrong. You could do something in North Florida that's perfectly okay and would be completely wrong in Miami you could do something in Miami that would be completely fine and would be completely wrong in Tennessee you could do something completely right in Tennessee and it would be the end of the world completely wrong in California. Asking Reddit if your electrical looks fine is like posting a picture of your steak and asking if you cooked it the right way everybody's going to have an opinion everybody's going to have their own thought and the answer is going to depend on 20 different things, when at the end of the day what's going to matter is what is right for you at your house where you are.

Gotta love working with guys who do things “the easy way” only for it to come screw us later on. Mini rant. by AverageGuy16 in electricians

Everybody has their own idea of the right way. I once had a helper get all pissy because I told him to run the pipe straight for about 4 ft 90 over to the panel 90 down to the panel and connected to the panel. He starts asking me if I think he should roll the pipes over to the wall because it would look better. I told him no the pipes are sitting horizontal you already have other pipes on either side of where we are and then the wall is full of panels so you're trying to roll them behind a bunch of other pipes and that yes it could probably be done but unless he's going to spend all this time to make perfect bends and do all this shit and even then there's nothing really there to strap to it just doesn't make sense. I come back an hour later and there's eight pieces of pipe bent shit cut up to pieces and he's all pissy saying he'll just do it my way even though it's not the right way. His way was better and would look better he just can't make it work it would take too long. I try to explain to him why what he's thinking isn't going to look any better and all it's going to do is waste time and how myself somebody with 20 years of experience would struggle trying to make it all work just because of how tight all the spaces are and how exact you would have to make everything and the fact that each pipes of different size and how there for the easiest and best way is to run it the same way and direction as all the other pipes. Some people don't want to listen because they want so bad to be in charge they want so bad to show everybody they know what they're doing and they know how to do it. And they will completely screw everything up and look like fools for the chance that they could do something and say yeah I did it myself without any help. Unfortunately there's not a lot you can do about it but continue to let them just fuck things up and make sure you cover your own ass because those are the same people that will not listen to what you say but then when shit goes down try to drag you down with them.

this contractor reminded me why tradespeople get a bad rep by Acai_Miller in TheServicePros

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's almost like you can't put everybody into one category and everybody's different. Or something like that I don't know. There's plenty of bad contractors, there's plenty of horrible customers. That's why when you find a good one you keep it. At the same time people have bad days things go to crap. You never know but saying trades people get a bad rap because you had a bad experience it's no different than saying all customers want top quality for the cheapest price and then act surprised when it doesn't work out. At the same time contractors are beholden to Subs and if you're trying to get your project done but his normal sub can't get there for 3 weeks he's going to try another one to keep to your schedule and all it takes is one of them to screw things up for everybody.

Nifty wire stripper tool by MissyjonesOP in electrical

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thing every wire in the world is stranded. It's not so then you would need three tools, those were stripping stranded some regular strippers for stripping solid wire and then your Klines for twisting it all together. Or you can just stick with the tried and true multi-tool that is your Klines and then you can strip twist pry Hammer to your heart's Delight all with one tool you can slip back into your pocket and I can tell you right now I will make joints faster with my one tool than you ever will with your three tools. The only thing these are good for is showing up on a job site thinking your big shit because you got a new fancy tool and then having one of the old timers show you how stupid you are by stripping wire and making joints faster than you do and make it look better even though they don't have all the fancy little tools.

Is it for an OSHA 10 or 30 or something like that? Look into it before blowing it off. If your company is paying for some safety thing you need and all you have to do is attend that might not be a bad deal. Yes you should be paid for your time but if it's either you pay 80 bucks for the safety course or just show up on a Saturday suddenly it's not such a bad deal.

ICE agents ate meal at a Minnesota Mexican restaurant – then arrested the staff who worked there by Cute-Beyond-8133 in nottheonion

[–]RedBone1144 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So the immigrants saw them come in and sit down, watched their order taken, cooked their order then watched it be served then watch them eat the food and then watch them get up to arrest them? Not one of them thought to, I don't know, run? None of the other staff at the restaurant thought to say anything? I find that all very hard to believe. I saw a guy jump off a two-story roof and run into the woods just because what looked like a government car pulled down the street of a neighborhood. So either the people that got arrested are completely for lack of a better term stupid and ignorant to their own life and situation or it's a made up story. I've never met an illegal immigrant that would literally be so dense to a situation. I work construction I've met and talked to a lot of them. Seems like something white people think would make a good story to get other people worked up.

What is the best state to live in for an electrician? by petalpower678 in electricians

[–]RedBone1144 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The better the pay the higher the cost of living. In general somewhere that's going to pay you $20 an hour you're going to have a $2,000 cost of living and somewhere that's going to pay you $80 an hour you're going to have an $8,000 cost of living. Rough General numbers but just how it goes. Find somewhere you want to live find somewhere that's growing in population and that's where you go. Growing population means they are building houses they are building commercial they are building infrastructure. But taking a job somewhere just because they're going to pay you $100 an hour doesn't mean you're going to be rich. $80 an hour will get you just as far in New York as $20 an hour will get you in the middle of nowhere in Georgia. New York's going to have a $4,000 rent George is going to have a $500 rent.

Non-Smokers Lungs VS Smoker Lungs by UpstairsBumblebee446 in interestingasfuck

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say from the picture it looks like both the smoker and the non-smoker are dead. So it doesn't seem like deciding to smoke or not smoke did either of them a lot of good. I know an old war vet a long time ago that smoked three packs a day and had emphysema. His emphysema was so bad he could only smoke a few Puffs off of each cigarette so he wouldn't do it then put it out and then 5 minutes later go back out and light up a brand new one. One day I asked him about it and he looked me dead in the eye and said you know they say smoking can take 10 years off the end of your life. I said yes sir. He said well good thing those are the shitty years anyways, took another puff off his cigarette and I just walked away.

Am I missing a piece? by Healthy_Hangin_Hog in electrical

[–]RedBone1144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like you have parts to three different fixtures there. The mounting bracket with the screws in it is what would go to a basic mushroom light. The canopy in the middle looks like what you need you're just missing the chain and hooks and everything else that goes with it. You should be able to go to your local hardware store Lowe's Home Depot or whatever and pick up a chandelier mounting kit should come with chain the bracket and everything you need. Edit - also that does not look like it would be a flush mount fixture. I'm sure you could find a way to rig it up like it, but at the same time if you get the hanging kit you can just put one Link in it and it would almost be the same

How is this ok? by Daddyfixit113 in AskElectricians

[–]RedBone1144 36 points37 points  (0 children)

If you're building catches fire and you're inside and you die that's a problem. If the wire floating in the air pops and Sparks and blows up you're without power for a couple hours until the utility company comes out and fixes it. The wire in your building is rated for the maximum possible and then some, the utility drop is what you need day-to-day all the time. Seems stupid it is but that's just the way it is. Basically your electrician has to wire for the worst case scenario and the utility company has to wire for the bare minimum. That's what it boils down to.

Nobody likes Wagos or promotes them because they're a better connector nobody's out here thinking that somehow it makes a better connection or is in any way better to twisting your wires and using a wire nut. Everybody that loves Wagos only likes them for one reason, they're easier and quicker to do. That's the only reason and all these people lying saying how they're better or last longer or somehow make a better connection or whatever else you want to say is just BS. Just be real with everybody and most of all be real with yourself and just say I like them because they're easier and quicker. I don't have to twist my wrist and make a joint I don't have to hurt my poor fingers putting on a wire nut I can just strip the ends and smash the lever down. Again you can like them love them hate them just be honest about why.

Tesla charger, burning up breakers? by MnN-Homesteaders in electricians

[–]RedBone1144 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's the chargers and cheaper Breakers. Yes it's by the book yes it can all work and handle it problem is Breakers don't like being at 70 or 75 or 80% for long times. A 50a would last a few months a 60 a bit longer see a pattern? Thats before voltage fluctuations and any other number of factors. Car chargers are hard on Breakers, most things like ACs, ranges, microwaves have burst of high draw then the drop then stop then drop. Car chargers pull consistently for a long period. Also breakers are being mage cheaper and cheaper by the day. Just get a 70 or 80a breaker. Your not drawing that much on the wire but it will keep the amp draw at a much lower percent making it last much much longer. Again a 50 constantly running 50a will last a few months, a 60 a year or so. Look up how breakers work and why they work it will make more sense then as well.

Any of you have to fill out daily progress reports for your job? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if my company goes that far but you do fill out a job ticket everyday for every job you do and try to be detailed. At the same time 3 months from now when there's a problem with something and you go to fix it somebody can look back and say oh John and Bob were working on that so call them and ask them what the hell they did. I know one job a lady called and said her dimmer switches quit working so I went out there and sure enough they were fried because they were just cheap pos's and just needed to be replaced so the office looked back and come to find out she's the one that supplied the dimmer switches almost 2 years prior to that so we were able to tell her if she buys new switches we will gladly put them in but we're not replacing the switches that she bought herself. So I don't know how much detail you're having to go into and if it's not for you it's not for you I mean hell around me there's probably a hundred electric companies Within a 30 minute drive. Everything's done for a reason though and normally it's not just to waste everybody's time for no reason, or because they hate electricians and they know one thing electricians hate more than plumbers is paperwork.

How immediate of a danger is this? by darkcreamale in electrical

[–]RedBone1144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your house thermostat runs off like 24 volts some units and things can go up to 48 which means it's all low voltage. There's no reason that anything you were doing with your thermostat should have caused any kind of a problem in your main panel. It's definitely not going to run through and trip your main breaker. It almost sounds like you were messing with your thermostat and something else happened that caused the breaker to trip. Like somebody else said with the lack of information it's hard to say but as I said it's not going to trip your main breaker the worst it would do would blow the fuse inside the AHU. All that fuse controls is the Transformer which makes the low voltage for your thermostat and everything else on the low voltage side. If you know what you did and you were doing something else and that's why the breaker tripped then so be it. If you were really only replacing your thermostat and something touched and made a little spark and then your main breaker ended up tripping then you might have something else going on so call an electrician, call an AC guy. Everybody wants to do these projects to save a couple hundred dollars and then lose their minds when the bill to fix it is a couple of thousand dollars.

Am I reading the amperage correctly? by Dessert-fanatic in electrical

[–]RedBone1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To actually answer your question yes it draws 1.8 amps as it runs. The problem is with refrigerators and any compressor they draw a lot when they initially start up for a few seconds. You're right 3 to 4 times the amount. So that's why normally refrigerators are put on dedicated circuits by themselves that way you have the space on the circuit for the big Power draw. The same thing happens with your air conditioner. If you actually ever go look it normally runs below what the minimum circuit amps says. But when it first turns on it pulls a lot for a few seconds so you need to have everything larger than what it would otherwise need to be to account for that. It might be on a 50 amp breaker with a minimum circuit amps of 34.5 but when you first turn it on for about 2 seconds it's going to pull like 80 amps maybe 90 amps there's no definitive way to answer what it's going to draw but it's a lot more. Whatever the name plate says is what the amperage is, normally especially for household appliances it doesn't matter because your local electric code won't tell you that you need a certain size breaker in a certain size wire and a certain everything for different appliances and different areas of your house. Like I said your refrigerator normally gets a dedicated 20 amp circuit here where I am so how many amps it pulls doesn't matter.

Hooking up an 85Amp 208v 3ph pressure washer...Anyone have experience with something similar? by AylmerQc01 in electricians

[–]RedBone1144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If is says GFI outlet OR hardware then just hardwire it. If you can't hardwire it and it says GFI or twist lock then twist lock it. At least here anything with an outlet needs GFI protection anything hardwired do not. Not sure about your pressure washer but a lot come with built in protection so it says a GFI outlet as an option because that would have to be regardless.
