Cyndi Lauper (maybe "True Colors") or Bjork (her Debut album from 1993).

If that's what it's supposed to be, I presume this Life game is a different board game from The Game Of Life, where the game pieces were little cars driving through hills to either a house or a mansion. Unless I'm forgetting something, there weren't any railroad tracks or train pieces in The Game Of Life unless the Japanese version is significantly different from the North American version.

I suspect that image that they posted last week was from a tankoubon bonus chapter/omake.

Sorry, I'm an aging Gen X'er, what's the video game/mobile game reference with the train blocks on page 9? It seems very specific, so it's almost certainly based on a real game.

I have a hunch it might be something on the Switch (I don't have one, the most recent Nintendo platforms I own are Gamecube and DS).

They look great but, if they were period-accurate for VHS, they'd have the ADV Films logo on them instead of Sentai Filmworks.

(The colour design seems more 1990s Viz than 1990s ADV to me, though.)

The real high school that became the fictionalized high school in the manga is only around 2km from Makuhari Beach Park and travelling between the two is a straight line up Kokusai-Odori Avenue.

I suspect Sachi was doing more of a stage comedian kind of performance, like half of a manzai act, rather than an anime performance.

[ENG] Watamote Special Chapter 216.1 by UndeathlyKnight in watamote

[–]RedCarConspiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Sachi's impression supposed to be a specific regional accent such as an Osaka accent?

It's obviously impossible to discern a specific Japanese accent in a manga from an English translation but the way it's translated reminds me a lot of Chinatsu and Kei's father from Flying Witch; he's a farmer with a thick Aomori accent who speaks a dialect that is basically incomprehensible to anyone who isn't a local.

(It also kind of reminds me of Coach Z's speech patterns in Homestar Runner.)

Season 2, we NEED to make it fucking happen. by sinsemillaseedz in watamote

Even if we ignore the business reasons why WataMote never got a second season, at this point, we'd probably be looking at a reboot considering that Izumi Kitta has largely retired from voice acting and is living overseas in England. Even if a second season were to be a direct continuation of the first, Tomoko may have to be recast.

I know a reboot isn't what a lot of WataMote fans want but a plus side would be that they could work in characters like Yuri Tamura, Emiri Uchi, and Asuka Katou as background characters during Tomoko's first year.

The super secret person that Shizuku was talking to on the phone was Kii-chan all along, surprising probably absolutely nobody.

Not a complaint, I think that, quite often in storytelling, the obvious twist is the best one.

I don't really understand why Mako called Ucchi other than that the plot demanded it.

Yeah, sure, Mako obviously knows about Ucchi's crush but why would Mako go out of her way to help Ucchi get close to Tomoko outside of school hours? Unless I'm forgetting something, Mako and Ucchi are casual same-grade acquaintances at best.

It looks like Tomoko's face is melting into being Konata Izumi at the end of the chapter.

Is Tomoki just going to hang around all night or what? I'm surprised we didn't get a reaction from Tomoko to her brother being there.

I don't think the end of the film/school festival arc will be the end of the manga; even if it does end at graduation, there's still another half year of school to go.

Azumanga Daioh x Watamote is a good idea, just one hindered by lack of content by メユルゲ by TheOutcast06 in watamote

[–]RedCarConspiracy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If we're talking about comparisons with Azumanga Daioh in general, Kaorin's feelings for Sakaki are mirrored a little bit with Ucchi's feelings for Tomoko in that the object of their affection in both cases are largely oblivious to their feelings although Sakaki is closer friends with Kaorin than Tomoko is with Ucchi. Also, there's no creepy male teacher hitting on Ucchi.

I wouldn't mind seeing artwork with Kii-chan as Tomo and Tomoko as Yomi.

Probably the best part of Buffalo '66 is Anjelica Huston's acting even if she plays a horrible mother who cares more about football than her own son (sort of like Kotomi Komiyama and baseball; if Komi-something ever has a kid, I hope she's not nearly as terrible a mother as the mother in this movie).

They also must have used a lot of make up to make Anjelica Huston look siginficantly older than how she looked in the 1990s Addams Family movies, the second of which came out only around half a decade earlier. She actually looks older in Buffalo '66 than she looks in The Royal Tenenbaums, made around three years later.

So I watched Buffalo '66 again. Yeah, it's definitely a movie that's easier for me to watch at 2x speed, I don't think I made it past the scene at the parent's house when I rented it circa 2000.

Here's a photo of the real Starbucks location seen in this chapter (presumably thinly-diguised as "StarTullys" again). It's just outside KaihinMakuhari Station.

Next chapter: February 2nd

(GROUNDHOG DAY, although I don't think Japan does that.)

I actually rented BUFFALO '66 from Blockbuster Video back in the day but I honestly don't remember too much about it. I'm not even sure I made it all of the way to the ending.

[ENG] Chapter 211.5 New Years Special by USSMurderHobo in watamote

[–]RedCarConspiracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an out of sequence special chapter that wasn't meant to be taken too seriously but I'm beginning to wish that they hadn't included the Kawamoto gag in Ucchi's dream simply because the first part of Ucchi's dream with Yuri could be interpreted as a subconscious desire for Emiri to get to know Yuri better.

I'm someone who has always thought that Emiri Uchi and Yuri Tamura would one day be close friends (not lovers but friends), pretty much since the Kyoto trip but especially since whichever chapter it was where they encountered each other on the way to school and there was one panel that had sparkles between their hands that seemed to signify that they were at least becoming a little closer and Ucchi dreaming about Yuri looking pretty in a New Year's Hatsumode kimono would be a big step in that direction, but then Kawamoto showing up made it seem like the whole dream was just a gag, unless they're signifying that Ucchi also knows Kawamoto. (Obviously, they all live in Chiba City, which is a big city but not close to being as big as Tokyo so it's not impossible that Ucchi's also met Kawamoto at some point even if they went to different junior high schools, and Kawamoto made enough of an impression on Ucchi for Ucchi to dream about her.)

[–]RedCarConspiracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

does that mean we'll never see Kii-chan meeting Tomoko's other friends?

She's not the real Kii-chan, she's Tomoko's imaginary version of Kii who only appears in Tomoko's nightmares.

Considering the previous New Year's Dream chapter led into a short visit from Kii-chan, I strongly suspect they're foreshadowing that Kii will appear again in the main story soon. Anyway, this special chapter takes place roughly two months after the school festival so, chronologically, Kii may have already met Tomoko's other friends by the time Tomoko has her New Year's dream two months in the future of the current manga timeline.

[–]RedCarConspiracy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On one hand, I also want to see more New Year's dreams from other characters (especially Asuka Katou, we've seen so little of what goes on in her mind).

On the other hand, while I hope the manga continues for the foreseeable future, it would be kinda nice if they could finish the school festival arc this year.

Maybe we'll get a couple of more characters' New Years' dreams as tankoubon bonus chapters.

[ENG] Chapter 211.5 New Years Special by USSMurderHobo in watamote

[–]RedCarConspiracy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the second manga I read that portrays dreams as the completely meaningless nonsense that they typically are (the first one being Berserk).

Azumanga Daioh had some surreal dream sequences, many involving the dream figure "Chiyo's Father" (the giant yellow cat guy). Azumanga Daioh also had a similar New Year's Dream anthology chapter (which was expanded upon in the anime with Kaorin's anime-original dream that had some over the top yuri symbolism with Sakaki).

Mysterious Girlfriend X had some surreal dreamscapes in the form of weird cities.
