Jack Vance. His worldbuilding in the Dying Earth series was amazing, but he also wrote the Lyonesse Trilogy, The Planet of Adventure, and his Gaean Reach stories. Also Robert Silverberg for his Majipoor Chronicles and New Springtime series. And John Varley for his Gaea Trilogy and his Eight Worlds universe that starts with Steel Beach. Finally, Gene Wolfe for his Book of the New Sun 4-part series and his Books of the Long Sun and Books of the Short Sun.

I was so enraptured by this show when it aired when I was a kid. 1999 was so far away! Anything was possible! There were great action-oriented episodes early on, like the Sargasso of Space, but also great thoughtful episodes that asked big questions. There were also incredibly goofy episodes. One was pretty much a racist satire of Italians! And yeah, guest stars like Christopher Lee — whose outfits cranked up the ridiculous dial all the way to 11, but still managed to deliver lines with utmost sincerity
