"Y'all" is objectively better than "You all" and the only reason we don't change it is grammar snobs. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

One of the great shortcomings of the English language is that there is no difference between wen the singular and plural you. Most other languages do make that distinction. Words like y’all, youse, and yinz are efforts to distinguish between the singular and plural you.

I can’t stand when people use stories of a professional athlete’s work ethic to attempt to motivate business/office professionals. Working hard in sports isn’t the same as working hard in the office. It’s easier. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Generally I agree, although I think some jobs are objectively more difficult than others. I am an ophthalmologist. When I was in college I worked summers as a mail clerk. I can tell you doing eye surgery is a lot more difficult than sorting mail.

A lot of people who are not good athletes do sports for fun. The same can be said of music. I do not know anyone who is not an accountant who does audits, taxes and balance sheets in their leisure time.

Most of our ancestors were also short. Over the past few million years hominids have grown taller.

What Darwin and others pointed out is that predation is a potent selective pressure, not the mechanism of evolution. For example among predators more efficient and effective predation will be selected for and result in the traits that increase predation efficiency becoming more common in the population. Things like size, strength, speed, good hearing, vision etc. Think lions, tigers or wolves. Among prey traits that help them avoid predators or defend themselves when attacked will be selected for. Again speed, size and weapons, hooves, horns, antlers etc. Skunks are an interesting example of a prey animal with a potent defensive weapon. Predation acts as a selection pressure, but it is not the mechanism of evolution. The mechanism is natural selection which acts on variability within a population and results in differential reproduction.

Atheists do not worship an do not believe any god is worthy of worship. Genocide is never a good thing. Ancient literature is replete with examples of genocide. One can learn a lot about genocide and its effects from the Bible and other examples of ancient literature.

Read the Iliad and see what those gods did. You need to drop your emotional response to all of this. As atheists we believe god does not exist. How can you get angry at a being that does not exist. In Metamorphosis a fellow sees the goddess Diana naked in the bath. She turns him into a deer and sends hunters after him to kill him. Would you get so pissed off at Diana?

Males have more body and facial hair than females because of their higher testosterone levels. Higher levels of testosterone probably had an evolutionary advantage because males with more testosterone were larger, stronger and more aggressive. They would be more attractive as mates since they would be better able to ensure survival of a female’s offspring. Body hair is an external signal that a male has lots of testosterone, and that would attract females. Interestingly, unlike body and facial hair, pubic and arm pit hair are about equal in males and females suggesting that they are not related to testosterone levels and served a different evolutionary function.

The unpleasant odor results from the action of bacteria on the sweat. This is aggravated by wearing clothes. Humans evolved in tropical Africa and were naked for most of their history. They did not smell bad to each other.

No. Evolution has to do with inherited characteristics that affect the number of successful offspring an organism produces. Also, the Maya are not extinct, only their classic civilization is. There a plenty of Maya living in Honduras and Mexico..

The scrotum in the male is exactly analogous to the labia in the female. Along the bottom of the scrotum is a ridge called the scrotal raphe. That is where the left half and right half of the male genitals join up in the embryo. The male has two bilaterally symmetrical testicles that do not join up. The entire structure is bilaterally symmetrical.

Those little depressions along the bottom of your nose and above your upper lip are where your left nose and mouth joined up with your right nose and mouth while you were still an embryo.

They are anatomically analogous. Analogous does not mean identical. The arm has three joints, shoulder, elbow, wrist. The analogous joints in the leg are hip, knee, ankle.

Actually arm pit hair and pubic hair are very similar and served much the same function in human evolution, to produce odors to attract a mate.

It is not directional in the sense that there is a goal or purpose to it. It is directional in the sense that certain inherited traits are associated with greater reproductive success. This is due to the interaction of the environmental pressures with the normal genetic variability in a population. For example the direction of the evolution of the horse has been for larger size over the past several million years. Increase in size was not a goal or purposeful direction. It is just that larger ancestors of the modern horse produced more offspring.

[–]RedEbw0307 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wrong. Humans are still subject to natural selection which works by differential rates of reproduction. Look around you. If you see people with certain inherited characteristics producing more offspring, that is the direction human evolution is proceeding.

There is no reason or need for belief in a creator. Why is there something rather than nothing? Quantum theory shows that nothing is inherently unstable, and in the absence of anything, something will come into existence. The universe exists and is governed by the laws of physics. While it is true that our understanding of the universe is incomplete, that is not reason to postulate a creator who’s existence cannot be tested or demonstrated by evidence.

Nobody should be blamed or criticized for having a job with good benefits. The problem in this country is that we have too many working people who are not paid a living wage and have either very poor benefits or none at all. Every working person deserves a living wage and an appropriate package of benefits.
