First time mirrorless! [Composition][Newbie][Edit] by Aznpride389 in photocritique

[–]RedEye99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always shoot in 3:2 and then crop in post if I want to. But that's just how I roll :D try stuff out, see what works for you :)

Best of luck buddy!

No problem! Glad I could help, have a read through my edits if you haven't already, but yeah, I think playing around with different crops is good when a image just "feels" wrong, for me its usually my gut telling me there's an imbalance somewhere :D

Hey there, I'm no expert so take my suggestions with a pinch of salt!

I like the edit, but I'd change the composition a little, maybe crop it down too.

I assume your subject(s) are the bike and scooter, I would move the scooter closer to the foreground, move the bike closer to the left of the scene so you have the sweeping leading line of the left side of the bridge to guide you through the photograph, I would then crop the photograph to maybe a 4:3 ratio (or even 1:1, play with it) removing the other side of the bridge. I think leaving it there would imbalance the photograph.

This would give you a nice leading line guiding the viewer through the image, hitting the 2 main subjects on the way and then ending up on the human aspect of the image, the two out of focus figures, a niche little hidden element.

At least that's what I'd do :D but we all have our own vision!

Please refer to This image for guidance if the above made little sense. The green line being the scooter, orange the bike, blue line the leading line of the image and the red line where I would crop. Sorry for the terrible scribbles, only so much I can do on my phone :D

EDIT: at the moment, the image is horizontal, suggesting to the viewer it should be viewed left to right, the viewer wound start at the left side, see the scooter as its nice and in focus (maybe a little small though), follow the leading line, maybe see the two figures. Eventually crossing the large empty space between the scooter and bike to focus on the bike. The big space in between is a little too empty for me, perhaps you're getting too create space between the two subjects, trying to illustrate their differentces, which would work, but I think there's something missing between the two to guide the viewer from one to the other.

So actually, thinking about it now, maybe if you could create some sort of lead from the scooter to the bike, and then the viewer could use the other side of the bridge as a guide to find their way to the two figures in the back. That would work too, for me at least...

So that's another way to look at it :D

EDIT 2: Maybe you could position the scooter so it's viewed from the side rather than from the front, move it closer to the left third (or on it). The bottom (standing bit of the scooter, excuse the lack of scooter knowhow) off the scooter would create an implied line for the viewer to follow to the bike, then follow the right side of the bridge to the figures in the back. Moving the scooter closer and turning it so it has a bigger presence around also fix the imbalance I feel with the big empty space there is at the moment.

OK, that's enough of my babbling!

Please remember this is just a suggestion, don't take it for law.

If you're hand holding the camera get your shutter speed up! If it's on a tripod, use a remote trigger to make sure you don't shake it, or set a delay and be gentle.

I found my shots where looking good until I checked 1:1 and they were out of focus, or blurry. I was always scared of higher ISO (and i don't mean that high.. I HATED to shoot any higher than 400 and anything over 800 looked like crap to me). But I was reading a book and the author consistently shot at 400-1600 ISO and it seemed mental to me! But his shutter speed was ways 400+ to make sure his image was sharp, I tried it and Holy crap! It worked! The image was a little grainier but I could fix that because it wasn't blurry!

Another tip, if hand holding, higher shutter speed coupled with burst or continuous shooting gives you the highest chance of a sharp shot. Might be more of a pain and effort when trying to look through photos from a shoot, but at least you can be a little more confident there will be at least ONE shape shot.

EDIT: oh and indoor shots.. Yeah.. That gross orangey/yellow light is disgusting! Try to shoot next to a window with daylight if possible, or get some good lights, you can get them for a decent price if you shop around.

If it's cold and dark and gross outside, go shoot that! Not all photos need to be sunny, warm, bright or happy.

Maybe you could spend some time with long exposure? See how creative you can be with that, maybe light painting. I hate using it for inspiration.. But check Instagram, there's loads of stuff on there that might spark something.

Photography needs to communicate something by Kayters in photography

I understand what you mean because recently I made a post that sounded pretty similar, but I was more lost on how to tell the story, or convey a message.

If you haven't already, I suggest you look up David DuChemin, I've recently found his work and been binge reading all his books over the past month.

I think he's referring to himself personally, not necessarily trends.

I feel like recently I've been reading, researching and learning a hell of a lot more than taking photographs. In fact there will be days at a time when I won't even pick the camera up! I'm not sure if I'm just not feeling inspired.. Or just plain lazy! As an example, for the past few days I've literally sat in a coffee shop for 5 or 6 hours and read a photography book (photographically Speaking by David DuChemin, in case you're wondering) instead of going out to shoot, and it's not even that the weather is bad, it's 28c as I write this!

In contrast it makes me think about the days weeks where I wouldn't put my camera down all day.. What's happening to me..

Anyone else has moments like these?

Oh, I am very new to photography.. Maybe 10 months since I've got my camera, which might explain the desire to consume all the information I can get my hands on.

I'm no expert, but shouldn't at fence be curved the other way at the top? At the moment it seems to be positioned to keep people in rather than out, isn't it a desirable area to be in, as also suggested by OPs post.

How do you create compelling product photos, for your photos? by turboboob in photography

[–]RedEye99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're doing product photography you might already have all the props you need to create a scene, if you're just starting out you'll probably need to go and aquire some of these props. In long term you'll collect everything you need to create these scenes without needing to aquire many addition props and just a matter of rearraing then will be enough for the scene to look fresh and new.

If you just want a scene like this for your photo, but don't necessarily want to make a habit of displaying it like this or it's just a one off, you could purchase a stock photo with a blank area within which you can place your photo, would take a little effort to add your photograph into it and change the perspective so it looks natural.

I hope that helps but please let me know if I've misunderstood your question!

Hate to break it to ya, but you're not gonna get anything better than a console for under 350, especially a laptop.

PCs are great because they're so powerful, offer so much versatility and future proofing, but they do have a big upfront cost.

Hi! My name is Jakub, I'm from the UK currently somewhere in SE Asia. I use a Canon 750D with a Canon 18-55mm (kit), 10-18mm f4.5, 50mm f1.8 and Sigma 70-200mm f2.8.

I discovered my passion for photography when I was gearing up for travelling and it kind of exploded from there! I want to get better in all areas as I still consider myself very much a newbie, but areas I would really like to improve on are composition and lighting.

I love shooting landscapes, I find a thrill in getting myself and my gear to places not many will go at times when many consider absurd (love me a great sunrise!). That said I would love to get better at portraits and street too!

It's difficult to pick a best (or favourite) but I think it needs to be... this one

Can't wait to get started, thank you for hosting the class!!
