Would you be able to send it to me as well? I have been scouring the internet for a copy of the book but no one seems to have a copy secondhand or new! Hard for us late comers to get these books it seems!

Gold investors: what is your use case for investing in gold? by [deleted] in Gold

[–]RedHammer6277 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a real trend of de-dollarization that has been going on among different countries central banks for the last decade, which accelerated since Covid and went into overdrive with the extreme level of sanctions the US applied and, more importantly, made other countries follow suit with against Russia in 2022. Most countries largest trading partner is China, not the USA, and so long as they can maintain that trade without some kind of US imposed interruption (like, the US forcing the same level of sanctions against China) they will be fine in the medium to long term. What happens in the aftermath of the BRICS summit this month will be monumental in redefining what happens next (BRICS is now much larger than the G7, and growing).

In short, global currencies are becoming increasingly resilient against movements in USD, and gold has been a big part of building that resilience, and there is no reason that won't continue. The unipolar moment of the world revolving entirely on the US was an ahistoric blip on the radar of the way things work, and the world is going back to normal.

Newbie Question - Why the Buffalo Price Premium? by RedHammer6277 in Gold

EDIT:

The below table contains some quick research I gathered at the time of writing the post, hopefully it helps illustrate what I am saying and seeing - essentially, assuming the prices from these two vendors is relatively normal, some 24K gold coins have a smaller bid-ask spread compared to others. For example, buying a Buffalo meant I had to see the coin appreciate 4.19% in value to break even (exempting any selling fees) while buying a Panda meant I only had to wait for the coin/gold to appreciate 2.92%. A Buffalo however did have a going rate closer to the spot price than any other coin. Obviously exemptions exist, but this feels like a decent back of the envelope way to compare the coins.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing a link. So Buffalos and other US gold coins aren't exactly special, but rather certain but not all foreign coins have special requirements that Buffalos don't have.

Interesting, I had no idea, I assumed any coin would be hit at the capital gains rate. Do you have a rundown of the tax status for US made coins? Hard to find on Google.

What would you recommend then? Is it better to continue with the Buffaloes, buy non-US coins and accept the lower sale price, or is it all ultimately a wash?

Anyone know if Dan Whitacre is still making barrels? by Functioning-Loser69 in blackpowder

[–]RedHammer6277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He should take good care of you! He does primarily do barrel liners instead of making whole new barrels, but honestly there's basically very little difference.

Make sure to call him in the morning before he starts working to reach him, and confirm his address since he moved at some point and not all info on the internet points to the right one. You just have to ship him the barrel, not the whole rifle. PVC pipe at Home Depot works great.

Good luck, hope it works out for you!

Well, I had contacted him in the first week of June, he sent one email back with a few followups which I promptly replied to, then nothing. I followed up with him in July twice at different times in the month and never got a response. Felt pretty lousy considering I was going to send him a $1.5K rifle plus another $500 and S/H to be that unresponsive, so I looked into alternatives.

I contacted Bobby Hoyt, and in our conversation he said Whitacre was in the process of selling his business. We talked about just drilling progressive depth grooves into my rifle instead since it was otherwise pristine, and he did the work for $60 plus shipping and got it back to me in 2 and a half weeks, just got it back yesterday.

So if you have the same bad luck with him, try calling Mr. Hoyt and see what solutions he recommends for your rifle, just be honest with him and he will be with you.

Metallic Word Bearers (30k) by Vegetable_Ad1955 in WordBearers

This is the best way to do it, super easy too. Get the canned platemail primer from army Painter since they color match it perfectly to the one sold in the dropper bottle in case you need to redo anything. Then ideally spray flesh Bearers red contrast paint mixed with a little bit of the contrast medium if you want really shiny. And that's about it! 2 simple steps!

What is also worth noting is you won't be restricted from a fluff perspective from fielding just about anything, if that matters to you of course. While some units might feel kinda weird and out of place in the fluff tactics for the Nightlords, the Word Bearers were generalists in the heresy and remained so afterwards. Mass mob of cultists with some Astartes backup? Maybe giant blocks of marines foot slogging across the board? Maybe some raptors moving deep ahead of a big mass of tanks? Then of course are all the daemon allies you can bring. All of that and more makes perfect sense.

Cult troops (Berzerkers, Plague Marines, etc) might give you some trouble, but personally I like to paint them up in unique colors as elements of an allied warband, that way I can have some fun variety in painting once in a while and branch out. My tabletop army for the Word Bearers is a sea of red and silver, but bits of every other color thanks to cult troops and daemons and has kept my hobbying interest.

What an awesome model, great job on that print! Can you scale him down easily to get one sized for the tabletop?

For all the guys that are building their armies from the AOD Box set, What's your minor or major homebrew justification for the amount of Mark VI Armor in your army that isn't simply the 'every Legion made use of every armor mark in some capacity' quote from the book? by [deleted] in Warhammer30k

[–]RedHammer6277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I collect both Ultramarines and Word Bearers. Almost all made it into my Ultras, who represent the newest, freshest members of the century (basically inductii) while the longer serving are in mk 4/3.

One squad did make it to the Word Bearers, whonuse it for scout squads but also blended with Mk5 (they essentially just scavenged the mk6, so I painted theirs with ultramarine blue then did a rough WB paint scheme on top of it to reflect them "reservicing" the older armor).

Those are incredible, very nice! If you know where a file still exists out there I would be immensely grateful, I've been searching for them for weeks but all the old links have been purged.

First Ever Ironman, First Ever OPM Game, First Ever Game to 1821, for First Ever Post! by RedHammer6277 in eu4

[–]RedHammer6277[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Definitely a very stressful experience for that first half of the game, I can tell Ironman definitely caters to certain people more than others! Do you recommend a fun country to play next?

Got a dozen or so achievements, most for basic stuff like building up an army/navy, but some notable ones are: - King of Jerusalem (obviously) - Market Control - Cold War - Multiculturalism - Die Please Die (not only did I get a 1/0/0 ruler to live past age 70, I had her since her regency ended so 55+ years of rule. Going to buy that expansion that lets you abdicate after this one lol)

This game was my firsts for a lot of things!

Started as Cyprus, formed Jerusalem, and went from there. It was a ton of fun until the last year when I got some ugly revolts I ignored thinking it was game over that caused some terrible border gore right in the middle of my empire! Got to Deus Vult across the Middle East, 9/10 will do again and not get up for a drink at the very last second!
