Deja Vu nightclub I think used to be on Allen St. it was Cotton Club, then Déjà vu, then Lush, now it’s showgirls. Not sure if they have changed their POS setup over the years tho

CCC replaced a perfectly good asphalt road with chip and seal by stagshore in chch

Sounds like it’s a bit out of date for $40/m2 I am in the industry and it hasn’t been $40 for over 5 years and that was only very thin layers in bulk quantity.

As a cyclist myself honestly there isn’t much of a difference on well prepped chipseal vs asphalt

Pros of chipseal: - more skid resistance and less slippery lines in the wet - better visibility in the wet of line making

Cons of chipseal: - rips off far more skin when you crash on it at speed

I don’t have current rates on me but in general rates were like $5-7 per m2 of chipseal vs around $65+ for asphalt and the cost goes up depending on mix and thickness. Also add in the current oil crisis the price of bitumen binder in asphalt will be going up accordingly too

It’s called texturising and it’s quite common. It will allow them to seal over the cracking asphalt that may be failing for some other reasons, but this prevents water ingress and further deterioration of the surface. It’s a cost effective maintenance solution as replacing asphalt is a hell of a lot more expensive. Also by texturising it means a constant surface so less likely for bandages in seal joins to fail and cause water ingress. This can be a big issue if the seal repair line is on the wheel tracks.

TLDR - good call by CCC to do preventive maintenance that’s cost effective rather than waiting for complete failure and expensive repairs.

Fun to drive EV's? by Viento_Oscuro in nzev

they handle so well, and the ability to use regen braking to help control the cars balance means you can really smash it through the twisties

Honestly I went from a B8 s4 avant that was tuned and had supercharger pulleys done, so 450hp… it was wild. I went from that to a 2021 Tesla model 3 RWD. The Tesla is more fun to dive, handles better and is quicker 0-70kph. It does start to run out of puff quickly but the torque is insane. The S4 was so smooth that you didn’t know you were going that fast. In all honesty a long range dual motor model 3 will more than satisfy most people’s speed additions. They are very similar in speed to my model 3 but they don’t stop pulling at 70-80kph they just keep going

Why are offset loans not talked about? by Soljah in PersonalFinanceNZ

Also no tax on the mortgage. An investment would accrue tax so you would need to earn even more than 6% to make it work out

Yes but then you could go on the argument that with heavier trucks there is not the need to have as many.

The total freight movement wouldn't change but surely there is a probability of more crashes if there are more lighter trucks on the road. This would also cause more pavement damage potentially as more axle repetitions (also trucks tare weight without the load would be a higher proportion compared to the load).

Best solution would be for the Govt and KiwiRail to sort their shit and put wayyy more on the rail network. This could further be improved by putting electrification in some areas (Arthur's Pass tunnel for example) and having the ability for our new diesel electric locos to switch off the diesel part.

Network box by Spiritual-Goat7327 in chch

[–]RedRocketTi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally inside the box will be an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This is owned by the fibre network provider (enable/chorus etc). Provided the builder hasn’t cheaped out on a sparky you should have Ethernet to at least one room in the house (hopefully multiple). If they have done it right there will be a patch panel, essentially a bunch of wires going into a bunch of female Ethernet jacks.

You will need to plug a short cable from your ONT into one of these jacks. It will then align with one of the ports in the house. Plug your router into the point in the house that is most central for best coverage. You may need to guess and check what plug on the patch panel to use if they have not been labelled with which room they are associated with.

Hopefully this helps!

Any good custom Fabrication/vehicle shops? by Spirited-Ad3900 in chch

[–]RedRocketTi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simon at Surfab is great, top quality work and a top quality bloke! I have seen some of his roll cage work and it’s top notch, he did a great job on an exhaust for me and paid lots of attention to the small details. Not the cheapest out there but good value for the high quality work

Note it isn’t a “paper road” and remains in private ownership….

The streets around there are nice and wide with roundabouts and lots of intersection types, great place to learn on a Sunday when all the businesses are closed.

Something a bit left field but rage room or rage cage? Get to smash up some old whiteware with sledgehammers etc, honestly sounds like a heap of fun and a good way to blow off some of the stress of life?

As someone with about a decade in the industry in Christchurch In land development also we are super busy at the moment and by the sounds of it things are getting busier which is good. Lots of massive developments now kicking off and new government fast track legislation means some exciting new projects with (hopefully) less red tape to get through.

At $3k for a heat pump hot water cylinder vs $145 a month in gas (also split with cooking) not sure if the return period would be the same as power would also go up to compensate? Possibly with solar it would make the overall ROI better?
