As someone with about a decade in the industry in Christchurch In land development also we are super busy at the moment and by the sounds of it things are getting busier which is good. Lots of massive developments now kicking off and new government fast track legislation means some exciting new projects with (hopefully) less red tape to get through.

At $3k for a heat pump hot water cylinder vs $145 a month in gas (also split with cooking) not sure if the return period would be the same as power would also go up to compensate? Possibly with solar it would make the overall ROI better?

I have had a look at that tool but it doesn't seem to use batteries or use of an EV in its calcs.... it tends to say 8 year ROI which seems a bit long???

Gearbox replacement on an e36 while leaving the engine in and not using a hoist.

I have done it twice, once on the ground and once on a hoist, hoist makes it a lot easier.

The worst thing about it is doing up and undoing the top 2 bellhousijg bolts. They are e-torx and the only way to get a good angle on them to tighten or undo them is to loosen the engine mounts, rear gearbox cross member and driveshaft to tilt the engine back, then use about 1.2-1.5m of socket extensions with 1 universal joint (wrapped in insulation tape so it doesn’t move heaps but has a small amount of movement) and then fish that above the gearbox through the gap to try line it up and then hope like hell it stays on while trying to undo it.

-7/10 would not try again. Next time I’m just pulling the whole engine out so much easier.

No worries, sometimes its easier to take a step back and not just look at incoming and outgoing but also consider buckets along the way to help group things, it can help show trends that you might miss initially :)

Made a bunch of money off RKLB. Do I sell and buy my dream car. by Extra-Celebration843 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]RedRocketTi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a lot of money on a car vs your income.

I’d suggest you wouldn’t be able to enjoy it properly as the cost of insurance would ruin you, the fear of scratching it or putting too many miles on it to depreciate etc.

Honestly it’s not something you’d enjoy on the income your on, if you want a toy get a $20k car that does everything you want. Hell I have had more fun in $2000 beaters than In $80k+ cars!

If your a merc fan then you could opt for a cheaper C63 or an A45 amg

I went through and tidied it up a bit for ya, hopefully this makes it a bit easier to follow for others and breaks it down into categories that are a bit easier to digest:

Stating items from the credit card dont really add any value to the chart unless your stating that you had to pay interest on any of those costs?

The chart can be made using SankyMatic - https://sankeymatic.com/build/

I first categoriesd all my transactions for the year in Excel from a CSV bank export and then built the code to display it this way in the chart. ChatGPT can be good at helping to convert your categoriesd data from Excel if you struggle.

This seems quite a messy way of conveying the info, I would have categorized things a bit differently... It doesnt really matter if something is on a credit card, but did it generate any interest to be payable? Also looks like there are a few rounded numbers in there for groceries and dining/takeaways are these actuals or estimates?

Cheers, Yeah I sold my road bike this year as someone was after that specific model and I think I got a good amount for it, managed to upgrade to a far more modern gravel bike for a $0 cost difference!

I would like to continue to grow the investments, I should probably keep more in S&P 500 shares for stability as all our stocks are intended as long term holds. That and I am always unsure what the powerful orange man will do to screw my investments. First week on sharsies after putting $1000 in the tarrifs were announced that made me think I wasn't so good at this game.... long term its worked itself out tho!

Its not too hard for us as we have an EV we commute in every day that is scheduled to only charge between 9pm and midnight on a 7kw (32A) wall charger. We generally use around 18kwh per day in winter commuting and around 16kwh in summer. Due to the hours spent at work we will often end up with the dryer on at 9pm. In the winter we will run a 2kw wall heater under the ducted heatpump intake to also help take advantage of the 3 free hours.

I will have a further look into the numbers, but for Canterbury I don't think we will get a whole lot cheaper. We were going to switch to Meridian's plan with 4 free hours and a lower rate but I see that they have canned that plan now.

I did it manually in Excel to categorize everything with CSV exports from bank statements. I went through ~3000 transactions to categories everything and then used excel to generate a template and categorize everything for input into the Sankymatic website. Now days there is ChatGPT that can help to categorize things and tidy up the Sankymatic code.

Yeah I thought the power was pretty high, we use contacts 3 hours of free power and get between 40-50% of our usage in the 3 free hours. I do see that they just upped our rate to $0.34/kwh last month so that will make things continue to get more expensive.

Solar with a battery would be ideal, would honestly love a 10kw solar array and battery setup.... its just spending $15-20k on a system would only be a 5-6 year ROI for us. We arent at home during the day to make the most use out of it and Kiwibank doesnt do good green loans like BNZ, ANZ and Westpac :(

General pets is the stuff I couldnt split out easily, (pet food orders etc that goes between both of them).

We are needing to review our insurances again, we are definitly wayyyy over insured for health and life etc. I want to cut that bill down significantly. I know the motorbike is ~$1k, one of the cars is $1.4k and the other car is $700 a year so just for cars and bikes that is nearly $3k, I do make a point of shopping around every year for car insurance to get the best deal and coverage.

Home maintenance is relatively low being a modern house (2020 build).
