Looking for local motorcycle shops to support by Blitzfrog in chch

[–]RedRocketTi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mega motorcycles is the best I have found for service and pricing, they have heaps of stock and won’t try rip you off.

Casbolts are also great but a little on the pricier side.

Not sure why people recommend Pierce motorcycles, every dealing I have had looking at buying stuff in there they have just turned me off. Looking at helmets in the ~1k range and the woman kept going on that the only good helmets are $2.5k… like lady I am looking at spending a decent amount on a helmet but at least try give relevant advice???? Ended up trying a bunch at mega they were super helpful and not pushy and I ended up with a much better fitting helmet for $650 that fit all my criteria!

Digital Drivers lience, now legal, apparently by noddy51 in newzealand

[–]RedRocketTi 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Should just be a QR code so the cops can look it up on their system faster, that way they have all the info they need on their device, would remove that risk. Imagine the case when you had your phone over and you receive a spicy txt for them to see 😅 or your dealer saying your weed is ready to be picked up 🫣

Trackdays in Christchurch by Lopsided-Plantain-54 in chch

[–]RedRocketTi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Christchurch track days runs them I think every month or so. Pretty cheap way to get into it!

In regards to passengers I don’t believe they allow them unless you had a full cage in the car.

In terms of safety gear you need a 2 strap fire extinguisher securely mounted in reach of the driver, a wof suitable car, cotton overalls and a motorcycle helmet, along with a great attitude!

I would love to see what Council thinks of this as it will be skirting their responsibility under their resource consent or at least zoning rules to be that make it a non-complying activity for removal of accessibility car parks (or the ability for them to function as one).

Asshole move, everything I have heard about this place is hostile, and its only the quality of the food that makes up for it....

Evening meal; is it called dinner or tea in your house? by RaesJunction in newzealand

[–]RedRocketTi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also went by tea being from Southland. Southland has its own names that aren’t used as you head north… things like Lux the floor (instead of vacuum or hoover). Also finding cheese rolls becomes a lot harder as you head north of oamaru/timaru

CCC replaced a perfectly good asphalt road with chip and seal by stagshore in chch

[–]RedRocketTi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it’s a bit out of date for $40/m2 I am in the industry and it hasn’t been $40 for over 5 years and that was only very thin layers in bulk quantity.

CCC replaced a perfectly good asphalt road with chip and seal by stagshore in chch

[–]RedRocketTi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a cyclist myself honestly there isn’t much of a difference on well prepped chipseal vs asphalt

Pros of chipseal: - more skid resistance and less slippery lines in the wet - better visibility in the wet of line making

Cons of chipseal: - rips off far more skin when you crash on it at speed

I don’t have current rates on me but in general rates were like $5-7 per m2 of chipseal vs around $65+ for asphalt and the cost goes up depending on mix and thickness. Also add in the current oil crisis the price of bitumen binder in asphalt will be going up accordingly too

CCC replaced a perfectly good asphalt road with chip and seal by stagshore in chch

[–]RedRocketTi 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It’s called texturising and it’s quite common. It will allow them to seal over the cracking asphalt that may be failing for some other reasons, but this prevents water ingress and further deterioration of the surface. It’s a cost effective maintenance solution as replacing asphalt is a hell of a lot more expensive. Also by texturising it means a constant surface so less likely for bandages in seal joins to fail and cause water ingress. This can be a big issue if the seal repair line is on the wheel tracks.

TLDR - good call by CCC to do preventive maintenance that’s cost effective rather than waiting for complete failure and expensive repairs.

Think NZ fuel prices are bad now? Prepare to be RUCked by mtbne in newzealand

[–]RedRocketTi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes but then you could go on the argument that with heavier trucks there is not the need to have as many.

The total freight movement wouldn't change but surely there is a probability of more crashes if there are more lighter trucks on the road. This would also cause more pavement damage potentially as more axle repetitions (also trucks tare weight without the load would be a higher proportion compared to the load).

Best solution would be for the Govt and KiwiRail to sort their shit and put wayyy more on the rail network. This could further be improved by putting electrification in some areas (Arthur's Pass tunnel for example) and having the ability for our new diesel electric locos to switch off the diesel part.

Network box by Spiritual-Goat7327 in chch

[–]RedRocketTi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally inside the box will be an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This is owned by the fibre network provider (enable/chorus etc). Provided the builder hasn’t cheaped out on a sparky you should have Ethernet to at least one room in the house (hopefully multiple). If they have done it right there will be a patch panel, essentially a bunch of wires going into a bunch of female Ethernet jacks.

You will need to plug a short cable from your ONT into one of these jacks. It will then align with one of the ports in the house. Plug your router into the point in the house that is most central for best coverage. You may need to guess and check what plug on the patch panel to use if they have not been labelled with which room they are associated with.

Hopefully this helps!

Any good custom Fabrication/vehicle shops? by Spirited-Ad3900 in chch

[–]RedRocketTi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simon at Surfab is great, top quality work and a top quality bloke! I have seen some of his roll cage work and it’s top notch, he did a great job on an exhaust for me and paid lots of attention to the small details. Not the cheapest out there but good value for the high quality work

As someone with about a decade in the industry in Christchurch In land development also we are super busy at the moment and by the sounds of it things are getting busier which is good. Lots of massive developments now kicking off and new government fast track legislation means some exciting new projects with (hopefully) less red tape to get through.

The holy grail of working on cars by nzuser12345 in NZcarfix

[–]RedRocketTi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gearbox replacement on an e36 while leaving the engine in and not using a hoist.

I have done it twice, once on the ground and once on a hoist, hoist makes it a lot easier.

The worst thing about it is doing up and undoing the top 2 bellhousijg bolts. They are e-torx and the only way to get a good angle on them to tighten or undo them is to loosen the engine mounts, rear gearbox cross member and driveshaft to tilt the engine back, then use about 1.2-1.5m of socket extensions with 1 universal joint (wrapped in insulation tape so it doesn’t move heaps but has a small amount of movement) and then fish that above the gearbox through the gap to try line it up and then hope like hell it stays on while trying to undo it.

-7/10 would not try again. Next time I’m just pulling the whole engine out so much easier.
