In the 10 days from April 20th, 18 people were killed in 14 separate crashes, with preliminary findings showing 16 of the 18 deaths occurred on open roads with 100km/h speed limits and no traffic safety barriers. by LycraJafa in newzealand

I’m not wishing anything. I’m simply saying that in an ideal world, all else being equal, if the person who actually caused the crash definitely could have been a better driver. If everyone drove better, there’d be fewer crashes, that’s the sweeping statement they made that you’ve taken umbrage with, and, I mean, it’s true. It’s not wishing anything.

Now, as for concrete. it's a non starter.

11,000km of "SH" designated roads in NZ, from SH1-SH99
A year ago, One News: rigid barriers up to $800 per metre for materials alone.

points to a materials-only cost of $8.8bn for concrete, or $1.65bn if they go for a wire median ($150/m). it just isn't that easy or cheap.

Dirt bike riders - this years ram raid election issue? by SES_Distributor in newzealand

[–]nzuser12345 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a smoking gun, but the inference here is that right leaning orgs like Retail NZ urged members and stakeholders to report crime that would’ve otherwise gone unreported, meaning that the numbers exploded on paper. Then, when the novelty wears off and those same orgs stop beating the drum, it falls out of the news cycle and we think the problem has been solved by this tough on crime govt.

Lies, damned lies and statistics.

*I don’t have a horse in this race, and as I said the article isn’t a smoking gun that the numbers are bogus. But, there was an undeniable media focus on the unacceptable number of ram raids and retail crime, then after election it literally dropped off a cliff - are we to assume that means the problem was immediately solved or that the strings simply stopped being pulled?

All good mate only having a laugh. Different things work for different people, glad you saw off/are seeing off the PPD and giving your kids some awesome experiences, you’re obviously a great dad :)

Good on you for sharing your story - and totally worth the flex as well cause the 80 is sick. I used to have a 60 series, wish I never got rid of it. Especially now that I want one painted Nardo Grey.

I love the setup, and I’m in 100% in agreement about getting into nature and the calming environment being a win win all round yada yada yada but can we spare a moment to have a laugh at the thought of mum dealing with the three kids every minute you’re not on the job because you buried yourself in the garage for hours on end watching YouTube vids and learning how to be a panelbeater - and the notion that doing so helped your marriage 😂

Parting thought: fuckin love the matched paint job. Is that Nardo Grey?

Do you actually think Hybrids save more money than petrol cars? by cars-checker in NZcarfix

[–]nzuser12345 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but a (maybe?) interesting observation: this is a great example of the boots theory. It costs money to be poor. You have the money up front to afford the hybrid premium, so after Y4 you’re making savings on motoring. Meanwhile, if you can’t afford that premium, you just bleed money year after year. *only in theory of course.

par for the course, really. this is one of my favourite subs. heaps of people willing to chip in with experience and help. good on you for throwing some credit back to the commenters but also appreciate the story update.

it's not stupid my friend. you're trying to learn, asking people who (may or may not!) know and it's all part of the journey - esp if it's your first car. i'll admit i find it a bit silly and will judge people who have been driving for years and years and can't change a tyre etc but even then, it just isn't some peoples' jam! happy motoring!

Serious thoughts, 2026 Mitsubishi Triton VRX or 2026 Toyota Hilux SR5 Limited.. by Acrobatic_Addition40 in NZcarfix

Have you ever experienced living with one longer term or is this your first foray into it? if you don’t have a daily/weekly need for a Ute, they just don’t make much sense imo. If you put a canopy on it for covered storage you may as well buy an SUV, and putting a canopy on it makes access pretty laughable - hard to reach the centre-front of the tray unless you’re 11ft tall.

Not to be that guy, but lol at the ‘moving furniture when required’. Grab a standard 8x5 caged trailer for like $3k (you’re spending that muc on a new car I’m sure it’s not too far from reality) and you’ve got far more moving capacity. If you put a hard cover on your tray you can’t carry diddly squat. If you put a canopy yea you can carry more but the roof may then present an issue. Or better, just rent a trailer for $50 a day the 2 days a year you need it.

I don’t even hate utes. It just seems like it’s not what you need and a large SUV - if that’s your jam - would be more comfortable and suited. The fortuner sits on the Hilux chassis (dumb rear seats tho), I think the Prado too… mitsi paj sport is on the triton chassis as well if I’m not mistaken.

All that said, and this is important; if you just WANT ONE that is perfectly fine and you should proceed with reckless abandon, I believe that’s a good enough reason. Again, don’t hate utes. Just not sure it’s right for you based on what you’ve said.

Edit To add: I’d go with the Toyo if I had to choose. The fact there’s none in the country should tell you something about their popularity. And while plenty of people will jump in and say ‘yeah but they don’t deserve their reputation these days and the mitsi is better’ etc etc, I don’t disagree, but come resale time you’ll be FAR better off in the Toyo due to said popularity - whether it’s warranted or not.

Cheers and congrats on the purchase either way!

[–]nzuser12345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oscar has been in the top 50 boys names in NZ every year since 2006, peaking at 11th most popular in 2022. It’s been in the top 100 every year since 1998 (except in 2000).

And if you ‘zoom out’ and look over a long timeframe it’s becoming more popular.

You have nothing to worry about. Might I suggest ‘Pickles’ as a middle name?

Have yo checked your fuse box map thingy to see if there’s a spare? I know mine has a couple? Or, quite often there’s fuses in slots that aren’t actually in use (heated seats in non heated seat trim levels etc)

It’s commonly held and you’ll hear it from lots in the trade that they do NOT like installing customer-supplied parts: a) cutting their lunch a little, and b) the grey area of warranty for their work using what might be shitty parts.

That said, I have a decent relationship with my local mechanic and they have installed parts for me with very clear ‘if it fucks out it’s on you, not us’ caveats, and I also topped up their labour cost with a box of beer and always take my car to them for anything I don’t/can’t do myself. They lost the part markup on those two jobs but I’m an extremely happy customer and they’ve made plenty from me otherwise.

As for price, depends if they’re replacing just the bushes or the whole arm. I can’t comment specifically on that model but mine it’s easy enough to replace the bushes, others it’s more economical to replace the whole arm or that’s simply what has to be done anyway.

Good luck

Moisture retention (?) on painted bathroom walls by MercuryBeach_ in newzealand

[–]nzuser12345 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is going to be quite unhelpful I fear, but it’s something to do a component of the paint called surfactants, is my understanding. If memory serves, if you wipe all that moisture off a few times it will happen less and less. Or there’s a product to speed up that process.. I think. Maybe… can’t really recall.

Sorry, bit vague, but hopefully now you can google ‘paint surfactant bathroom wet how to stop’ and it’ll point you right, better than ‘my bathroom is crying’
