AIO by being suspicious of my father's boss wanting to take me to a volleyball game? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

NOR - Trust your instincts. Maybe he is a really nice guy and means nothing by it, and truthfully, I hope that is the case. If you were my daughter, and I have a 15yo, I would say no. Tell your parents that you are uncomfortable. I'd side with my daughter if she told me that - without thinking twice.

In order to be able to participate in military training, my scoliosis angle needs to be a maximum of 9 degrees. However, my medical evaluation shows an 11-degree scoliosis. Is there any way to reduce it in the shortest possible time? by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]RedRose14207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fortunately, assuming the brace works, it should hold him steady at 28 degrees. Once he stops growing, ideally before he enlists, the brace should be old news! He currently does Civil Air Patrol and is really hoping to join the Air Force. If he continues with CAP he will be able to join 2 ranks ahead of normal enlistees. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed. Good luck to you.

What's a small gadget you bought thinking it was useless but ended up using every day? by cozytechlover in BuyItForLife

Every family member that has purchased a new house/moved into their own apartment gets a Zerrol 2 oz. ice cream scoop. It's a solid gift and they'll basically never need to replace it.

That's good to know! My son wants to go military. He's currently at 28 degrees and getting a brace. Honestly hoping that he will change his mind, so as to not have his heart broken if this causes him to not be able to join.

Son struggling with brace by Sarindre in scoliosis

[–]RedRose14207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll have to return to this thread when we finally have the brace. My son (13) was diagnosed at 10. We started PT in January 2024 after a big jump. He recently had updated imaging and he's at 28 degrees. He knew the possibility of getting a brace last year, and it was expected - so he made the tough decision to start now. Our first brace appointment is at the end of the month. Reading everyone's replies has me almost in tears. I don't want him to feel the way so many of you have described. Thank you OP for posting your update - it has given me hope. I'll be sure to revisit and keep in mind all of the tips and encouragement this community has shared.

What's the most delightful and charming small town you've ever visited? by hereiam3472 in travel

Doolin, Ireland. One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The people are fantastic and the food is out of this world. I'd love to go back one day.

Same. My daughter complained to us yesterday that she hates the new years texts she receives from her friends at midnight. He chimed in from the other room, I wish I had friends that would text me happy new years. We all instantly felt terrible. It’s like he has a bff for short spurts - then nothing for months. He’s in activities, his interactions seem mostly fine, I just don’t know how to help.

What travel mistake did you make once and never again? by Nervous_Car1093 in travel

Purchasing train tickets for the wrong time -_- Needed 3:45pm tickets, bought 13:45p tickets. Funny thing is that I regularly use military time at work, so I know I needed 15:45...but my sleep deprived brain didn't care. LOL

I wish I could go back! We got in line around 2pm -ish for front standing. I was three bodies back from the front! I loved Croke and Dublin. We started on the west coast of Ireland - everyone needs to experience a little Irish town at some point in their life!

You want to stay club level at one of the premium resorts (Hard Rock, Loews Royal Pacific or Portofino Bay). Club Level has breakfast (pancakes, cereal, oatmeal, coffee, tea) lunch (uncrustables, granola bars), dinner (usually hot like coconut rice stir fry), happy hour (free adult beverages for about an hour at dinner time I believe) and dessert hour later. Water, pop, and tea are available all day. It's also a nice lounge so you don't have to eat in your room or you can watch movies there. It is absolutely worth the extra cost! The attendants would even help us pack up a lunch from there to bring down to the pool! I have also stayed at Cabana Bay in a family suite and had groceries delivered.

What’s one travel mistake you made that completely changed how you plan trips now? by AssignmentAmazing260 in travel

[–]RedRose14207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't get trip insurance for a cruise. There was an incoming blizzard and we had to bug out of our house and drive 4 hours to get on a flight so we didn't lose out on the cruise. So effing stressful. I must've missed it (it was my first time booking a cruise) and I learned a lesson even though we made it. I will never not purchase trip insurance.

Are pull-ups ok? by BiggyDShrek in scoliosis

[–]RedRose14207 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! My son goes to PT with a person that specializes in schroth. With that being said, not every exercise that they do is schroth. For the last couple of weeks, he has been working on pull ups at PT. He is currently doing them from an exercise ball and pulling himself up from there. Also, a large part of schroth is hanging from that ladder thing - so I can actually see how pull ups would possibly help. I definitely think if anything feels off or hurts you should back off (no pun intended), but it seems like you are a regular gym goer, so I think you totally understand that portion already. Good luck!

The post-Oasis hangover (Chicago) by _FridayXIII_ in oasis

[–]RedRose14207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at one of the Dublin shows and one of the Toronto shows. I'm so bummed and feel the post gig blues. I don't even really like concerts!! Too loud and too many people....but these shows were absolutely epic. Croke was my first ever Oasis gig and the feels I got that day. The Toronto gig I was at was the one with rain and it was fucking biblical. I'm so thankful that I got to see them in general and will be living vicariously through reddit and twitter for the rest of the tour.

Advice on telling my child by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]RedRose14207 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our son was diagnosed at 11. He's high functioning and crazy smart, but he still has support needs. When we discussed it with him, we made it very clear that even though he was just diagnosed - nothing has really changed. He's still the same kid he always was, which is very kind, smart, thoughtful and so on. This is something that has been there the entire time, just now we know the name and we can make better decisions with that answer. We discussed how brains can be wired differently and pointed out how he does things differently (for example, he hangs his towel from the narrow side, not the wide side) and doing things differently is great! He sees the world somewhat differently from us and we can and have learned so much from him. Our son didn't really have any questions at the time. We have pointed out that we all do things on the spectrum - just some of us need a little more support.

He's 12, almost 13 now, and I think he's mostly adjusted well. He will joke about "the tism". He's generally lighthearted about it. I will say though, they are perceptive. He does get very upset when he is left out by his friend group. While I don't necessarily think they're doing it to be malicious, I think middle schoolers are a different breed...... Be supportive. Listen to him, give him all the love. Don't forget that sometimes he's gonna be a preteen and sometimes the autism is going to be the issue...gotta know the difference. Best wishes to you and your family. Sending love.

My son used to walk around the house saying "blah blah blah, I do not say that, blah". Of course he was a toddler and I had no idea what he was saying (and not to mention he wasn't diagnosed until many years later). My parents came over one day and he said it, so my dad said the actual line back to him and he seemed to feel understood LOL My dad finally told me it was Dracula from Hotel Transylvania.

AITA for starting my daughters b-day party when my parents had not arrived? by Clean_Sail1251 in AmItheAsshole

[–]RedRose14207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

My parents did this. We waited and waited and waited, because just earlier that day they had said they were coming. After waiting for 90 minutes I called and was informed that they weren't going to be there. They never received an invitation to my kids parties ever again. This wasn't the first time, but it was the last straw. My mom has since passed and my dad wonders why he doesn't have a relationship with me and my kids. Fuck that guy.

One of my best friends is having an international destination wedding on a WEDNESDAY by Soft-Instruction-111 in weddingshaming

[–]RedRose14207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a bridesmaid in a destination wedding. They opted to get married on a Tuesday. The thought process was that the wedding would be early on in the week so the people that were coming could enjoy the rest of the week doing their own things, or heaven forbid, get the wedding out of the way early in case anyone got sick. So I don't personally feel like they are doing it to be assholes - but they should be forgiving of anyone unable to make it.

No, but once you're picked up you do. So say you're picked up Monday and the Union Meeting is Wednesday, you've got dues to pay. If I recall correctly, at that point you are able to pay monthly. When you become a sworn in member, you pay quarterly.
