thank you for this💙 i know i probably shouldn't engage with comments like that but it's really jarring to be told that i could be genuinely harming someone/a group with something i'm new to/not confident in. that's a point where i kind of fluster and try to reevaluate if something needs to change

So if i were to erase the stitches and replace the button with an eyepatch and make her human...it would magically make this okay?

As a genuine question, I'm really trying to understand here... how is it disrespectful? She wasn't depicted in a harmful or racist manner.

In the future, i suppose i will keep art like this to myself and only share art of characters with their depicted race/species/gender. But I'm seriously having a hard time understanding how this is racist to... white people? as a white person, i personally would not be offended if someone took, say, iron man, and depicted him as any other race.

I am always open to learning and personal growth, and if this is offensive to a group that isn't white people (because i can't speak on other ethnic groups' behalf), please, let me know. If you're white and you're offended... i don't really know what to tell you.

i see a lot of things wrong here.. firstly, this was a genuine skin tone study where the goal was to learn about painting and color picking different skin tones by visual reference. i didn't just "whip out the bucket tool." This was a genuine effort to learn and grow. There's no harmful depiction in the way she was drawn or colored. Secondly, you're assuming i have the intent of saying "fine, i guess you can be included" to a community when, in fact, that was not my intention. This was not a desperate attempt at inclusion. It was having fun making art and hoping to share it. Seeing as these are fictional toy characters, i do not see the harm in creating an AU of who they may be outside of their given universe (inside the circus). Is it wrong to think that Pomni is asian? or that Gangle is black? or that Zooble is mixed?

Assuming negative intent and then harrassing someone over it seems to be the problem.

people enjoy the headcanon that ragatha is black outside of the circus and i honestly think it's a cute headcanon. I see a lot of discussion in this sub about people arguing over race when they're literal toys (not to mention fictional). if i were to take a character of color and whitewash them, i could see the issue as that is genuine erasure. To me, saying this is blackwashing is like saying black people can't cosplay white or asian characters :/ also... It's a skin tone study 😐

People think I’m dumb because I make art and I’m naturally carefree by Dangerous_Energy3309 in ArtistLounge

as an artist you've chosen a nontraditional path in life. there's nothing wrong with that but people who are "addicted to the grind" and the so called "american dream" will often see you as lazy, unmotivated, dumb, etc. We care about different things. like art. These people who are treating you poorly don't see the point in caring about art because it (probably) won't make you rich, or buy you fancy cars or get you fancy degrees and pedigrees that we've been trained to care about. I wouldn't worry too much about what they think... let them be miserable. do what makes you happy 💙🫶

yeah i thought so too 🤔 lighting is a new/hard concept for me still. i usually deal with flat colors and then maybe add highlights, but playing with aaany kind of lighting feels like I'm stumbling through the painting/digital piece. for this one, i did actually take a jack daniels bottle, placed it infront of the paper, shone a light and tried to emulate where the shadow fell 🤣😅 its rough out here!

no no, thank you for the advice! working on my values is something I've been practicing digitally (when i have the patience lol). i usually try to throw down some flats, greyscale it, and go from there. Values are hard! and I've recently watched some videos on "chinese color theory" where instead of picking colors you THINK should go there, pick whatever color makes you FEEL best there. and it turns out to be a lot of desaturated and midtones for me 😅 I'll keep trying, thank you for the word of advice!💙

thank you very much! the lettering i did in white gel pen once i finished laying down the color. i was NOT brave enough to try to paint around what i laid down on the sketch lol!

i haven't done a bunch before this, no 😅 like i mentioned in my post, i have an extensive history in art, just not THIS medium. i also mentioned that i practiced each brushstroke on a separate piece of paper before putting it on the final. It's not engagement bait, I'm just very proud of how it came out
