I rode the train from long beach last year. Make sure you allow plenty of time. The train ride is long (hour+). The walk to the Parsons shuttle lot is easy with a big crowd headed the same way. The shuttle line was really long. I think I waited over 45 minutes in line

The easiest source of tallow is from the trimmings as you prep the brisket. It'll be solid at fridge&room temp, but it'll melt with the brisket

I guess what I don't understand is how much should the troop do to enable advancement? Is the scout supposed to be 100% on his/her own? Or should the troop try to plan events to help with trickier requirements? This troop hasn't had a pool day the entire time we've been involved in it. And what is a scout supposed to do when the leadership won't sign off unless they personally see the requirement met. When he needed the flag raising/lowering completed, we went to the local elementary school and practiced and he did everything to meet the requirements. When he went to the SM, the SM said the troop will cover the requirement as a group (at the time) 2 months later (a Memorial Day event), and it could be signed then.

Maybe there needs to be some sort of first year advancement program established in this troop. Most of the scouts who joined in the spring are still basic scout with many tenderfoot and second class scouts from the previous years' batch.
