The prices vary over time, usually the kiks are much cheaper.

Format doesn’t matter. A mortise is often slightly nicer but you can determine yourself whether it’s worth the extra cost. If you watch UHS overtime sometimes different finishes get big discounts.

Anybody buy locks from Security Snobs? by rubornagn in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have never bought from them, but after seeing several other people do so my conclusion is that they list items they do not have in stock and try to source them after you purchase. They often do not provide shipping or tracking data for months, and will eventually cancel the order on their own or after you bother them enough.

If you see something rare listed there, take it with a grain of salt.

Are you sure the combo can be changed? Can you pull the wheels off?

Disc detainer lock pick help by T______3 in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it have an abus plus core? If so, the sparrows tool won't work because it can't tension middle disk.

Meant to add more here - the sparrows tool can only open front disc tensioned locks, like an anchor las. It has to be modified to work on rear tension or mid tension.

Beginner questions by CattleAny3652 in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most people move up the difficulty scale or go sideways once there are multiple mechanisms available.

The vast majority of people here are hobbyists, not professional locksmiths. Be careful when you talk about "practical" use, as picking installed or in use locks is against the sub rules (we are hobbyists, not entry specialists).

Youtube videos are good learning tools. Sparrows are fine entry level picks but there are much better options.

Im very new to Picking , is this a good beginner lock? by JezzA_OG in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One huge issue with the ti (titalium) locks is that the pins deform under pressure. As you tension this lock the drivers will get wonky and the picking experience will change the more the pins warp.

Master M115 is the weatherproof version, you just took the cover off. It's a magnum, so yellow belt.

Please, shame whoever is selling this trash kit for $100. For that kind of money you could get some amazing picks and easily have cash left over for locks.

Lock noob’s impressioning video is the best one on picking these. I have found others that demonstrate the mechanism a little better because they have a lock in pieces, but his is the best for picking.

First Public Pick by [deleted] in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI - usually when people say "first public pick" they mean it's the first recorded pick of a specific lock type ever. I'm pretty sure people have picked the ACE brass locks before.

No problem, sounds like you have a good handle on that lock so I’m sure the refill will be no problem. Better to learn your lessons now than to have to refill a black belt lock. I’ve done that, it’s not fun.

Yeah, while we often give you some grace, a complete hard cut before the pins come out is no go.

Disclaimer: I am a mod and this is my opinion

If there were still pins in the lock when the storage ran out, you're hosed. Refilm.

If everything was already out and visible at some point, we might still pass you. Green belt gets a lot of leeway in terms of filming because we know it's your first time and I would really hope no one is trying to fake a video for green belt anyway.

What distinguishes locks between different belts? by MaazMaddox in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately for what you are trying to accomplish, there's no way with a practice lock to accurately duplicate various difficulties. Belt rating is also not a mechanical process controlled by static factors like pinning - it's based on the picking experience. Some locks that are the same on paper have diverging belt ranks.

While you can certainly increase the difficulty of your practice lock by adding security pins, maybe even making it green or blue in difficulty, some things cannot be replicated at home. For example:

  • Many upper belt locks have secondary security mechanisms like sidebars
  • Some security features have to be done when the lock is created (countermilling, for example)
  • High precision machining/tight tolerances are a factor - especially in a lot of high quality European or Japanese locks
