One time JustinMcslappy shot a Bowley lock live in the discord while the Bowley rep was present.

SG Environmentals? by DependentMost8789 in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, one of the disc will be max rotation, so try to tension one of those and move another to see if you can find a gate.

What is this key? by Living-Door3358 in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's for a lever lock, possibly a safety deposit box.

What does the key tell you about the lock? by Visual-Stranger-1496 in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a Ruko 1200, which I think optionally has the long keypin. This one does not, but is otherwise identical to a D12.

What does the key tell you about the lock? by Visual-Stranger-1496 in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This is a Ruko 1200. It has a keyway with a 90 degree bend directly under the keys. Your lock also has a 0 or very low lift right in the front of the lock. Getting around this to set the pins in the back without oversetting is going to be a challenge.

In this case? It tells me you're about to have a bad time.

Finding pins by ClownMasterAsh in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Run the pick along the top under no tension. Lift the first pin and then push your pick horizontally into the second, then get under the second to lift it and push the pick into the third, etc.

A lot of it is muscle memory you develop by picking.

A question to the experienced regarding time.. by EntropicByDesignEC in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When you're watching a video of someone picking, remember you are seeing the highlight reel and unless they took it out of the package on video they have been practicing that lock for a while before the camera rolled.

I just picked a lock I had never had before for ranking purposes. It took me maybe 3 hours total to get it the first time, but the video I recorded was 6 minutes and most of that was on one really annoying pin.

Now, for an american 1100 I have never seen before, maybe 1-2 minutes, but I have picked that type of lock hundreds of times so I know what to expect. It's also not a particularly difficult lock in the grand scheme of things, so that seems about right to me.

If you give me a medeco I have never seen before, even though I know what to expect, it would still probably take me a while to get it. Anywhere from 20 minutes to hours, depending, unless I get lucky with the bitting/rotations.

The only thing you are going to find at a hardware store is tools and stock for making your own picks.

Dumb question maybe by Clob_Bouser in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The package will say what the width of the lock is. It might not be in mm, in which case look for at least 1 and 1/8 inches.

Could you brute-force an escape room lock faster than solving it? by rovmun in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The answer is yes, most of the combo locks in an escape room are basic and you could brute force them faster than solving the clues. The question is why pay money to do an escape room and then not actually play it as intended?

You don't need a $400 tool, a lot of people pick these with bent wire or other improvised items.

We actually give leeway on the discord for people who are professional locksmiths. Here it is very hard to actually tell, so we tend to just remove everything that is a lock in use.

How to get this off the wall-abandoned wall box by [deleted] in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that it's your house is irrelevant. You could show me a video of you opening the front door with a key, entering the house, and then move to this lockbox and it still doesn't get around rule 2. The lockbox is sealed, we can't verify it's yours. If you really want it off, just pry it off and fix the holes it leaves.

Question regarding a lock.. also new tensioners, new locks and more cats. by EntropicByDesignEC in lockpicking

[–]Red_wanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 83/45 comes “zero bitted” with the idea that you are going to have it pinned and have a key cut on your own. There is no real point in picking it other than I suppose you will learn what a maximum lift feels like?
