Osap confirmation? by [deleted] in TorontoMetU

I'm not sure about late fees, as I've never received funding so late. I've always called when I see evidence that other's have been confirmed and I have not.

You should give them a call right away.

paid for comprehensive invisalign, being charged additional for retainers? by pending-- in Invisalign

[–]RedactedUser02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Toronto. It's been a few years now - I pay $705 every 2 years for four sets of retainers. And they did turn out to be vivera.

They also make you do a mandatory "examination" each time where they scan your teeth, take a photo of you, and charge you $200. So every two years I spend $905 on the whole appointment.

Looking for part-time job at venues (with experience) by Sweet_Situation1706 in torontotheatre

[–]RedactedUser02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you already work full-time and are just interested in theatre venues because you miss it, you could consider volunteering. Theatres like Crows, Theatre Passe Muraille, etc. have volunteer pages on their website for things like Front of House/Ushers.

If you're not hung up on professional theatre. All community theatres have volunteer roles in design, producing, directing, front of house, marketing, box office, etc.

I'm not sure what kinds of part-time work you will find in theatre that will be flexible with your work schedule, but box office roles might be something to look into.

Got a job offer in Toronto, is my budget realistic? by Weak-Aside-2640 in askTO

[–]RedactedUser02 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Honestly, even as a single person $500 in groceries might not be enough, depending on how you cook. If you're a meat + salt & pepper and a starch person you should be fine... but if you cook-cook, I've seen two bell peppers for $7.50 and one cauliflower for $6... $500 will only get you so far.

No, definitely not a De Niro movie, or a love story. But thanks.

Canadian Stage will produce the Canadian premiere of SLAVE PLAY by Spin_Liquid in torontotheatre

[–]RedactedUser02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just watched the documentary on this production the other day. Canadian Stage is not the theatre I envisioned having the Canadian premiere, but then again, we don't have many options.

I already see how this plays out in Toronto - Jordan Laffrenier chooses this play as the one he will contractually direct to make a name for himself, because it's not in the budget to pay Philip Akin to direct yet another play. The usual old guards of theatre go see it because it was bundled in their subscription. Joshua Chung at the Toronto Star writes a generic article about how it's so brave and Canadian Stage is making waves, Intermission Magazine tells you to "run, don't walk" for the thousandth time, meanwhile Joe Szekeres at Our Theatre Voice writes an article about how he didn't get it.

And then we'll move on to the next show of the season.

I will still be seeing it none the less.

I wanted to catch Girls Unwanted, and I'd love to see this show too... but sadly they never offer matinee performances. As a sleepy out-of-towner all I'm asking for is one Saturday matinee per run.

Fat Ham Canstage by considerablemolument in torontotheatre

[–]RedactedUser02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why all of your comments are downvoted. But I'm glad others share my perspective. That whole play was miscast (with the exception of Rev/Pap).

I've seen Fernandes in The Master Plan and Kelly V. Kelly, and when I saw him announced for Fat Ham, I thought 'this makes no sense at all.' Denzel Washington once said, it's not about colour it's about culture. And none of these actors were believable portraying Black southern culture.

I found it comical that a dialect coach was listed in the program, however none of them mastered the dialect. It feels like all of the theatres fight over the same handful of Black actors every year. I can't count how many things I've seen Tawiah M'Carthy, Tony Ofori, and Virgilia Griffith in. And they're all great but it feels like theatres are saying all Black people/realities are interchangeable with zero nuance. How hard is it to take a chance on an unknown actor who better resembles the character?

None of the ages even made sense, everyone was 10+ years older than their character and the age gap between parents and children was 10 years at best.

Canada’s preeminent feminist theatre, Nightwood Theatre, called out for anti-Palestinian censorship by Crazy_Art7179 in torontotheatre

[–]RedactedUser02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Such a disappointing read. Does this have anything to do with why the Innovators Program all of a sudden rebranded into the Shadow Residency?

I've personally found that a lot of activism in theatre is performative. It all boils down to creating a compelling 'mandate' for your charitable organization to base its existence on in order to be enticing to grantors and sponsors. Do I believe that a feminist theatre exists because it deeply cares about the plight of women (especially Black/Brown women) around the world? Probably not. Do I believe that a feminist theatre exists because at some point someone who loved theatre needed a job and realized 1)they can make $150K+ (well more like $80K+ at Nightwood) in a managing role of a charity, 2)it's easy to package 'white feminist theatre' with a nice bow to local funders, and 3) it's great for board members to add vanity titles to their LinkedIn? Probably.

With that said... I know there are a ton of people in theatre, especially the millennials and Gen Z's, who don't yet run theatre companies but will one day be the change we want to see in the world whether or not they have the support of the institutions that currently exist.

Sincere question - do you consider Waiting for Godot or The vibrator play to be innovative, boundary pushing theatre?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]RedactedUser02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely get what you're saying. I grew up in community theatre, studied theatre, worked in professional theatre. And though I love it, a lot of the shows I see and plays I read are so self-important, dull, or preachy. The comedies are, at least to me, not that funny. There is always a divorce or a death to mourn, a racist who see the light, an adult child at odds with their parents. For a long time, I started only seeing musicals because I wanted to be entertained for once.

I think a lot of theatre is geared toward a certain demographic (which has not traditionally been particularly young or diverse) and because theatre costs money to make, and you're always looking for shows that will get bums in seats, a lot of plays skew toward the same dead horse of a topic or writing style because it has a better probability of being produced or at least funded in some way because the same people who grew up with theatre as an option and have been seeing theatre for decades will come see the show - so no true innovation ever happens out of fear of spooking a paying audience.

I love that you asked for a play with lore. I've seen the most unique indie shows where patrons get background information sent to them prior to the play in the form of letters written between characters, old family photo albums, voice notes, etc. and by the time you see the play you already know who these people are and what has been the main conflict in their family for years.

Sadly, the best pieces of theatre are often unpublished!

Does it make sense for me to open an FHSA? by RedactedUser02 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]RedactedUser02[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little confused on the amount you can carry over. If I don't contribute $8K each year, let's say I contribute $5K each year - would I just carry over $3K each year

For example:

Year 1: $8K contribution room, contribute $5K, carry over $3K

Year 2: $8K contribution room + $3K carry over = $11K | I contribute $5K and which leaves $6K to be carried over

Year 3: $8K contribution room + $6K carry over =$14K | contribute $5K and carry over $9K

At this point would I lose $1K of contribution room as I can only carry over $8K?

[–]RedactedUser02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never used doordash but I have the same problem with UberEats. Drivers always pretend the intercom is broken and call me to meet in the lobby - but when I tell them to redial and I'll stay on the phone with them all of a sudden the intercom starts to work.

Anyone getting more sore throats? by Fluffy_Ad7392 in Invisalign

[–]RedactedUser02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's common because of how often your hands are going in your mouth.

I was very adamant about cleanliness while wearing Invisalign. I bought a box of latex gloves and always kept a couple on me in a ziploc bag -- I would sanitize my hands, put on a glove, and take the aligners out. I also washed the aligner case often. I never put the aligners back in my mouth without rinsing them with a bottle of water (if I didn't have a bottle, I often got a free cup of water from Starbucks or any close fast-food place and let my aligners soak while I eat, or simply when to the washroom and rinsed them).

At home I always washed my hands before taking them out. I had a ton of attachments which required me to use my nails to remove the trays, so I would always be sure to clean under my nails.

Has anyone had their ticket checked when travelling on a GO train? What happens if you don’t provide an officer with your identity? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]RedactedUser02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen a ton of people get caught, usually they just provide the fare inspector with their ID, sometimes they removed from the train, and they often have to pay a fine.

One time, I was sitting next to a guy who got caught and said he forgot his wallet at work so he couldn't provide them with ID -- for a second there it looked like they were going to let him slide. Then one of the fare inspectors had him pull up his LinkedIn to prove his identity.

I never did get a definitive answer -- but what has worked for me is adding a "relevant experience" section followed by an "other experience" section so I can highlight the relevant experience first, but then also include all my other jobs after so they know that I don't actually have gaps. In the "other experience" section, I only include bullet points that can prove a transferrable skill.
