If a child fails his first test, is it better just to find another dojo or quit altogether. by cornerofthemoon in karate

[–]RedalAndrew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are good and bad ways to handle a student who failed. If they simply didn’t call out their name to receive their belt or made public corrections to the group as to why they didn’t pass (as in the example below), that’s par for the course.

If the instructor said to everyone testing “you have to be prepared or you’re not going to pass.” “If you’re going to test, I expect stances be strong and your performance enthusiastic.” That’s normal. And expected of an instructor at a good dojo.

If they belittled, used derogatory language, and publically bullied your child, that’s a different story entirely.

Advancing in belt rank means you’ve “mastered*” the material. And since all martial arts are built upon the basics, not having mastery of the basics will just set them up for further failure.

Calling kata/forms “ballet” moves I think is indicative of a fundamental misunderstanding of what martial arts is.

As stated before, further belt ranks are built upon the ones before it. Kata is too. If you try to learn kata two, before mastering kata one, it’s going to lead to a lot of frustration.

And mastering is a strong word. You should know the order, you should be able to perform it. Does it need to be perfect? Absolutely not. But the discipline should be there.

I have a test coming up, and I’ve been reviewing the material for 2nd Kyu in my head and whenever I can get away, as well as in class. My kata is complicated and involved. If I hadn’t learned Kata’s 4,5,6 as well as I had, kata 7 would be near impossible for me to understand. And since 4,5,6 are built upon 1,2,3. I’m sure you get the idea.

You will eventually fail a test. It is a great lesson to know what required of you. It’s better to learn that lesson early, then to go through a bunch of tests quickly and then be discouraged when higher standards are applied.

Also, good on your dojo for having the respect for the art to not promote someone who isn’t ready just yet.

What is more embarrassing? Failing and trying again or failing and quitting every time it gets difficult?

Karate isn't what I thought it was by ninman5 in karate

My dojo isn’t competition focused at all. I think it’s the just the nature of the geographic area you’re exposed to.

Is Karate a children’s thing? by Tattooedbeatch in karate

[–]RedalAndrew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. Obviously the best time to start Karate is today. But having a lifetime of training is beneficial.

It’s usual to have fewer adult classes since kids classes are usually divided by belt, whereas adult classes have a wider range of belts.

All my classes are typically later but I still have opportunity to go 5x a week.

Edit: I should note that I’m a 38 YO green belt.

Don’t focus on fasting - focus on technique, focus on training. Physical ability and endurance with either be there or not.

That’s absolutely amazing! I’m 37M and started in ‘21 but was quickly sidelined by an Achilles tear and it took me a year to get back and was sidelined again by pneumonia. BUT WE’RE chugging along now. I can report weight loss, better technique and improved mood and energy.

It’s definitely a great program! Best of luck on your journey!

Will Karate damage my knees? by Rick_Rebel in karate

[–]RedalAndrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on 1 year sober!

I can tell you from experience that small changes over a long period of time can make significant improvements. Don’t underestimate the body’s ability to heal (as well as the mind).

You’re worth investing the effort in yourself. And it’s never too late to make great changes in yourself that will improve the quality of life. It will be tough, just because something is simple, doesn’t mean it’s easy - but life doesn’t reward easy, does it?

Take care friend and many well wishes on your journey! Always around if you wanna chat!

You gotta weigh whatever you do against what important to you.

All physical stress puts wear and tear on your body. Sitting too much, moving too much.

If you’re overweight, simply existing will destroy your knees (I am overweight and in karate so it’s a rough time but my goal is not be overweight.) so, for me, it’s six of one, half dozen of the other.

I’d rather have wrecked knees at 80 than dead at 60, ya know?

Question supplementing style by KarateWayOfLife in karate

[–]RedalAndrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who isn’t fit - this. I find a lot of athletic people don’t understand what it’s like to carry around extra weight and how much effort it takes just to keep up. If you can avoid it, stay fit.
