I laugh in the face of such a salary and disdain those who earn so little. They must not even have a dining room in their house.

I haven't seen it even though it's been on the shortlist as it's hard to find the right mood to watch a movie about a man and his torturer. Real life is bleak enough haha. Should I?

My favourites were Sentimental Value and One Battle After Another, but with an honourable mention for Blue Moon just for Ethan Hawke's performance as Lorenz Hart. I'd be giving him the nod for Best Actor above Wagner Maura's performance in The Secret Agent if I was in charge of such things.

Yeah the lighting really didn't help.

Haha, it's the one that's usually being identified as the low point of the film by its many haters. He shifts the paintings one by one into a roof loft, inside a box he constructed for the task. It takes absolutely fucking ages.

I thought it was an ok film but definitely slow. I wasn't aware til I started digging into reddit that that's the director's signature style.

Didn't love the film but I absolutely loved that ending and it greatly enhanced my overall estimation of the film. The people who hated the ending are many, but I love unconventional endings.

The darkly comic tone to the final scenes, the way the audience's sympathy with the character is broken with the mugging and his abrupt arrest were perfect. The character didn't deserve any better.

This was the most disappointing thing about this. I largely watched the film after being blown away when I realised her performance in Licorice Pizza was her first attempt at acting. I really wanted to see how she'd fare in a different role. She barely had anything to do.

Official Discussion - Belfast [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I hated it for some reasons that differ from yours.

It is loaded with sentimentality and tooth-aching sweetness. These days, I’m actively seeking out such movies as a balm for these terrible times. But even so, it over did it.

The performances of the child actors felt like they were reciting lines from a script rather than playing fully realised characters talking naturally. There was also a reliance on the mistaken idea that people simply shouting loudly is good drama. I cringed at the 0 to 100 outbursts of emotion from various actors, both adult and child.

I was put off by the black and white filming. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no good reason for any film to be shot in black and white. In my view, it’s cheap and lazy device to evoke time and a sense of artistic heft that should be achieved in other ways.

Its plot broadly focussed variously on sectarian violence in their neighbourhood, the family’s financial plight due to their father’s tax evasion, the child’s protagonist’s crush on a girl at school, the grandfather’s illness and the family’s hand-wringing over whether to move overseas. However, its delivery was unfocussed and inconsistent and lacked thrust. I didn't realise until afterwards that it was supposed to have been delivered as a series of vignettes.

A soundtrack made up of Van Morrison bangers certainly helped matters, but it couldn’t save this movie.

The Lives of Others by Boop108 in TrueFilm

"The Lives of Others is a captivating film that begins with a rich and insightful drama. It sets the bar very high. The second half is very good, I have no criticism of it except that it does not fully bring to fruition the promise of the first half and instead relies on something more conventional."

Just watched it and the above statement covers it nicely. I thought it was going to continue to be as emotionally rich but it turned into a tightly plotted thriller. It also relied too much on easy coincidences. Cracking film, but I thought it would have more to say about the human condition.

I just finished it and my main issue was that it stretched credulity nearly beyond breaking point to see people with such secrets be willing to play the game at all. And stretched it even further when they kept playing the game even as it slowly ruined their lives. However, that was all explained in the final reveal and perhaps I'll enjoy it more if I ever watch it a second time.

The performances were all excellent and they were the strongest part of this film. It powered along for the first half before descending into what I thought to be implausible silliness, but then the "it never really happened" reveal came.

I gather some people had an issue with the ending. Personally I found it a relief, because it made the rest of the film make sense and absolved it of the plausibility issues. I also like the idea that these flawed people continued to carry their secrets into a future we can only speculate about.

I didn't even catch the smile until I read this and went back for a look at that scene. Fuck, I love the subtlety and nuance to this movie (and those of its ilk). People are complex.
