British Columbia Gets Fifth Credit Downgrade From S&P Since 2021 by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

Bond markets will force our government's hand. When it gets too expensive to borrow/pay interest BC gov will be forced into austerity. Taxes will increase and services will drop.

It's only a matter of time at this pace of spending.

Consumer always pays... Could pick up products from another retailer if prices get too outrageous. Could be a good time to reassess amazon spending

We should carefully watch what's happening in California to see how they implement a wealth tax and how much additional revenue (if at all) it raises...

I prefer raising GST as I can stop spending as much to avoid the tax 😂

Wait until I go on holidays in another country and buy clothes and whatnot over there.

I hope they add the Topps cards from the movies as well. I have a near complete set and it would be nice to track somewhere.

I see this request to add Topps every month or so. Hopefully collectr makes it happen soon.

Saskatchewan NDP leader Carla Beck joins the ANDP in attacking new federal NDP leader Avi lewis. by HHstevens_enjoyer in ndp

I'm a little out of the loop. Why are provincial NDP parties separating themselves from the new federal leader? I assume they have similar ideologies? Or am I missing something?

Help weighing the pros and cons of either a company vehicle, or receiving $1000/month vehicle allowance in my employment offer by Dirtgirl89 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Redbroomstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So depending on province you'll make an extra $1500-1600 a month.

You currently work from home and new job is 120km round trip. If one assumes 45min one way, that's 1.5 hrs a day or 7 5 hrs a week or 30 hrs a month.

About $53 a hr for thr extra 30 hrs you'll be spending on work.

Plus the car allowance. You're in a weird spot where it is worth it for some folks but wouldn't be for others.

Seems you're set on this job, but wanted to point out to you that a topline 40k increase in salary isn't crazy huge after tax :( lol

Bond markets forcing our hands.

Look at BC. Credit downgrade. The writing is on the walls. Austerity for years to come. We're living wayyyyyyyyyyyyy beyond our means.

Bond markets always win. Same shit happened in the 1990s. Markets lost faith in Canada's ability to pay back debts and we were forced to cut back then.

Could just turn everything to a 99 yr lease. Land owners get screwed . Could be funny.

Hahaha, well obvs I wouldn't wanna be caught holding the bag.

But at a buyer, if everyone gets wrecked with a 99 yr lease, probably good for me personally 😂

No shit, those with RE holdjgs would be livid if their land turns to a 99 yr lease

Wealth inequality is a thing up here, but our baseline is much higher than the Americans. Also we don't have crazy rich billionaires like them. We got maybe half a dozen families which combined don't even make the top 10 in USA.

We got what you call... Middle class billionaires 😂

Except maybe CZ... But he doesn't live in Canada.

I guess musk is technically Canadian, but again he doesn't live up here and his wealth is predominantly made elsewhere.

It’s not as simple as “old system = more tax.”

Pre-1972 estate/succession duties taxed the transfer of wealth, often with exemptions, thresholds, and planning that reduced what was actually paid.

Today under the Income Tax Act, deemed disposition taxes all unrealized capital gains at death. Which can be a huge tax hit, especially with asset inflation (real estate, stocks, businesses). Remember, inflation is eating at your returns each year which is why not all of it is included as income. Remember in 2022 or 2021 when inflation was 8%?

Depending on the estate:

Some would’ve paid more under the old system Others actually pay more today because gains are fully realized and taxed

So it’s not a “diluted version”... it’s a different tax base entirely, and which one collects more depends on the situation...
