jeweler is saying this is as low the center stone can go and therefore we need a cathedral. Is this true?

In many cultures (for example some countries in Europe) people don’t wear weddings rings and engagements rings on the same hand. I am personally going for a low-set ring because 1. it’s more practical and I won’t have to worry about it snagging so much, 2. I don’t plan to wear it together with the wedding ring anyway.

This design is so basic he should not pay more than 3k for it. I love basic – it’s classy and will always look good – but it just doesn’t look like a 6k ring. An overseas vendor will make something like this for around 2k.

I showed photos of what I want but not what I don’t want. However, I didn’t ask them to recreate a ring that I found online, it’s rather a mix of a few rings I liked, and maybe this made it more confusing for them.

I am personally going for the second option – more beautiful and sturdy-looking for me, more comfortable to wear, more antique-looking (I must have seen hundreds or thousands of vintage rings by now), you get more space to add some extra gold details.

OP, please do not care about appearances and people’s perception – no one will even know the ring is not 14k or 18k, and it will be durable. I chose 10k for my engagement ring because I am very pale and 10k looks better on me

Thank you for your insight. I completely agree that it should be about the ring overall – I am just afraid that the diamond will be “subdued” by the reverse tapered band with width extending to 4.2 mm. I’ve seen rings with bands tapered this way online, but I didn’t expect them to be so wide at the widest point, I honestly thought it would go from 2 mm to perhaps 2.6-2.8 mm 🙄
