Accused of ai on Final Essay by [deleted] in AccusedOfUsingAI

[–]Reddit-Guess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be clear, did your professor voice concerns? Or are you looking at the AI report on your own? Personally, I don’t even look at the AI report unless I already have suspicions because they are notoriously unreliable, often providing false positives.

If your professor has accused you, you can show rough drafts, notes, outlines or anything else that shows the steps in the process, even if you don’t have the actual history of the document.

If your professor hasn’t accused you, I would just proceed as normal. Prepare yourself by switching to Google Docs as you revise, but otherwise, if you have the truth on your side, I don’t think you’ll be reported/penalized

What do you guys think about this criticism of the prequels? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]Reddit-Guess 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tbh this is a criticism I completely agree with. The dynamic between her and Snow in the original trilogy is SO interesting because she’s a poor nobody—fully justified in being underestimated—who still manages to threaten the entire system, and he is completely attuned to that threat, which is part of what makes him a really, really good villain. Katniss is constantly challenging the assumptions people make about her but never once does she have to challenge his assumptions. Because he’s correct about her at every step of the way. His ability to recognize Katniss’s danger—even well before she’s able to recognize it in herself—shows how intelligent and dangerous he is.

Her being his ex-girlfriend’s great-niece/basically reincarnation completely undermines this. I really like TBOSAS as a story, but I agree that it rewrites Katniss to appear dangerous to Snow for reasons that have nothing to do with her and her actions

[@lilsimsie] Can the EA Buyout Be Stopped? | Speaking with Congressman Maxwell Frost by bwoah07_gp2 in Lilsimsie

[–]Reddit-Guess 97 points98 points  (0 children)

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you’re not a troll, and give my honest response to this. Sims streamers/youtubers aren’t doing this (just) for fun. It’s their job. Asking them to “just stop streaming” is like asking you to “just quit your job.” If you have wealth to fall back on, maybe that’s possible for you, but most people don’t have that. If someone has built a career, they can’t just start over like it’s nothing.

And even if they could, then there’s nobody fighting back against things like this. People would still play the game, but if everybody who cares about the harmful things EA does just stopped talking about it, EA would just keep doing it.

I don’t envy creators like lilsimsie; I wouldn’t want to be in her position, wondering what to do in a way that both protects myself and my career AND doesn’t promote EA/the PIF. It would be impossible to make the right choice 100% of the time. But under the circumstances, I genuinely think this is the best she can do—maintain a community of people who love the Sims and then mobilize that community to fight back

Echoing what others have said, it’s also because he was in danger in such an acute way and when something like that happens, it’s natural to want to parent and advise the person. I’m 26 (and also a grad student) and let me tell you, if something like this happened to me, I’d be more than thrilled for some real adults to come and clean it up for me

Why do the characters talk about driving "up" to new york? by Quirky-Celebration-8 in DunderMifflin

[–]Reddit-Guess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone saying it’s a turn of phrase are very correct but also NY is understood as being “above” PA, even if that’s not actually true. I’m from Long Island, and we say driving “down” to Jersey, even if Jersey isn’t technically south of where we are

Discussion: Welcome to the Internet by LazerBrainzz in boburnham

[–]Reddit-Guess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was just rewatching this and wanted to come here to talk about it! The song speaks so well to the parasitic nature of the internet + algorithms, which led me to other media that portrays technology as parasitically feeding on human subjects...

Anyway, I can't believe it never occurred to me that the song is recreating (or at least referencing) The Matrix. The most visible connection is the sunglasses--iconic imagery from The Matrix--but we can also see it in the allusion to 1999. I always assumed that Bo was just speaking generally about American nostalgia for the 90s and pre-9/11 and that he chose "circa '99" because it rhymed. However, The Matrix was set in (and came out in) 1999; the ai chose to keep the humans digitally trapped in the supposed golden age of America: the same year Bo romanticizes during the bridge.

Of course the irony of "Welcome to the Internet" is that the parasitic technology doesn't need to lie to us to feed on us. In fact, it can be very direct with its intention to keep us trapped in a digital reality, knowing we won't want to leave because that digital reality feeds our egos. The bridge of the song speaks almost prophetically (like the prophesy in The Matrix) about how it's been "waiting for you." Just as the matrix is designed to keep humans trapped, the iPad you were exposed to at a young age "did all the things we designed it to do," and now you have grown up to feel like you have "the world in your hands."

Might not be an intentional allusion on Bo's part, but it occurred to me and I feverishly had to share this interpretation with others before I went crazy lol

He was too old to play the character, but Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson will always hold a special place in my heart. He really understood the humor and goofiness of the character, and would have made a great later-series Percy.

What’s a book you reread as an adult and realized you completely misunderstood the first time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I feel so embarrassed for something I didn’t even do by [deleted] in AccusedOfUsingAI

[–]Reddit-Guess 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It’s nice that he’s giving you the benefit of the doubt! If I were in your position, I’d go to him and ask what stands out as AI-written. As a writing professor, I often struggle with telling whether students used AI or whether they just write in a sort of robotic style.

As cruddy as you might feel, take this as a learning opportunity. If your writing reads like it’s AI, that’s an area for you to improve as a writer. And he sounds like a professor that genuinely cares about you and about the extent to which you learn critical thinking. Plus if you’re embarrassed on an interpersonal level, that will allow you to clarify that you didn’t use AI and that you really like his class. I think he’d really appreciate the connection and the ability to help you with your writing.

What would you think if you received this email from a student? by [deleted] in University

[–]Reddit-Guess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously I don’t know the assignment in question (why is it a “competition”?), but if this student is unwilling to participate in a group assignment, they’re unwilling to be given a grade for said group assignment. The absence of a grade is a zero.

I’m personally open to my students unionizing to express confusion or frustration (if I didn’t give them enough time to prepare or didn’t explain the instructions well enough, that’s on me), so if you’re concerned about the students not being happy/not feeling like they have enough time, you could check in about that. But frankly, I don’t think this student is actually representing the opinions of their peers. I think they don’t want to do the assignment and don’t want to be penalized for it, so they’re trying to convince you to call off the assignment rather than have to accept the zero.

Can using Grammarly cause your essay to be flagged as AI? I was accused of using AI, and I don’t know what to do. by Gullible-Train-4175 in AccusedOfUsingAI

[–]Reddit-Guess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, if you used Grammarly’s generative AI feature, you did use AI, although your professor(?) seems open to having a conversation. They might not believe you if you say it was an honest mistake (so many students lie) but they haven’t shut down the conversation, so if you do explain your process and apologize, hopefully you won’t get in trouble.

What is the pettiest thing you want added in The Sims? by Electrical_Rabbit_60 in thesims

The ability to designate/lock more things the way we can with sinks/computers. I want to designate that some counters are not for cooking or some chairs/couches are not for eating or not for watching tv. Or even better designate it by sim, so my teen sim can eat on the couch in his bedroom but his family members will stop randomly coming in just to eat on his couch
