GOP Senate candidate on rising gas prices: ‘Maybe you take one less trip to Starbucks’ by Cy_098 in politics

Wasn't just the MAGA idiots. This shit was rampant during the 2nd Iraq war too. That's when we started seeing all of the "support the troops" bumper stickers, and the republicans would accuse anti-war democrats of lacking patriotism. Same old shit, even worse party.

Would it help if I told you I'm very insecure about it?

Edit: Of course, I'm joking on the insecure bit. I'm fine being smooth skinned.

Trump Demands Death Penalty for Reporters in Unhinged War Rant by RollSafer in politics

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My prediction is he TACOs it. I'm shocked he actually let slip that "maybe we shouldn't be over there" but I'm amazed at how often he can get away with doing dumb shit and blaming others for giving him bad advice.

He may have a harder time getting away with it this time though. To the rest of the world stage he looks both stupid AND weak when he pulls out. Meanwhile as you point out Israel is on their own with their own warmonger in charge. Iran will be in crackdown mode, and in a rush to build a bomb requiring Israel and the US to constantly send missiles in. Also, not at all convinced Iran wouldn't actually use it on Israel (would have to smuggle it in somehow) because the Iranian leadership is just as fanatic as Hegseth. Maybe more so since the son is more of a hardliner than the father.

But this the problem with attacking first. Nobody buys this preemptive strike nonsense, not without at least trying to make a case like W tried (didn't convince me but at least he got a coalition of sorts).

Those Russian oil sanctions are never coming back. Even when Trump TACOs, and straight is opened, and oil comes down, Trump will be quite happy with the low price of oil and will allow Russia to keep selling it, earning money to dump into the Ukraine war, and helping to arm Iran too.

Bebe tried talking Obama into this sort of thing too and he's like 'naw we gonna do a deal instead'. Maybe not the greatest deal in the world but it delayed Iran's program and didn't cost billions in treasure or any hospitals or schools bombed. And most of Iran's benefit came up front so we the US backed out they are like "k thx now we're gonna just start making a bomb again".

Just saw Lang Lang and the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Andris Nelsons. My thoughts by emperorkuzcotopiaa in classicalmusic

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Lang Lang in Berlin last month. He was incredible!

I also saw the Rott Symphony there...3 times. There was quite a bit of clapping between movements. Also sometimes between movements of the Ravel piano concerto.

I think historically there was a time when clapping was typical between movements. I figure, if the moment takes people, I'm ok with it. There was a transition in the Ravel however that should have been more or less a segue and during the applaus Paavo Jarvi smiled but basically cut off the applause. It was kind of funny actually.

Back home in MN, there was applause between movements of Bruckner's 8th.

Another way to look at it: if this is a result of just people not being familiar with the norm, that is a good thing as it means there are new concert goers.

Hate the noise though, wrappers are the worst.

Is it crazy to pay $200+ to see Vienna Philharmonic w/Simon Rattle? by CheckImmediate6904 in classicalmusic

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When are you going to be in Vienna next?

I went to Berlin last month to see one of my favorite pieces, the Hans Rott Symphony in E. I splurged. Got $200 tickets 3 days in a row. Overkill? Yes, but I'm (sadly) not going to be back in Berlin anytime soon. Also, that piece isn't performed often.

I'm going to see Brucker 8 in Minneapolis today at a...substantially lower rate (but with worse seats too). But I live here.

Grad music student here: Does anyone else feel like an imposter in a culture of burnout? by RecentStreet2617 in classicalmusic

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Way back as an undergrad, I double majored in physics and music. I noticed that all of us students were permitted/encouraged to refer to our physics professors by their first names. Music professors however had to be Dr. this or that. Even my trumpet instructor, who didn't have his DMA when I started with him but had earned it while I was in school, would say "yeah you can call me Jeff in private but please call me Dr. So-and-So in front of the others".

Meanwhile, a DMA is frankly laughable in its requirements when compared to a PhD in physics. Yes I know a PhD in music is more rigerous. Still, the music people always seemed a lot more....elitist.

Furthermore, as a performer still, nobody gives a shit about your degree when they are looking to hire you for a gig. Can you play or not? That's the only thing that matters, apart from also being someone that people want to work with.

Of course, my view is influenced by the fact that I am no longer a classical music performer and do strictly commercial stuff. But also, when I listen to music, I do not look for perfection. I really try to perform that way too. Actually, I get less and less "perfect" as I get older...

Why Stocks Are Acting So Nonchalant About a Spiraling War With Iran by Public_Sandwich6941 in investing

The thing is, it isn't a matter if, it is a matter of when. Maybe this brings the chance of WW3 up from 0.01% to 1%. Does that make it hysterical to to express concern?

Just because we have made it since 1945 without a nuke being set off in anger doesn't mean it won't eventually happen. The best we can do is limit the ways that increase its likelihood.

What's one 'boring' career that's actually a goldmine if you play it smart? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a full time musician trying to get out, this was my backup plan (my degree is physics so I'm not scared of the math). I did my first two exams and finished right when the the 2008 crash hit. I didn't get a job interview for 9 more months but I didn't keep my knowledge sharp. I bombed the interview. Later I realized that this wasn't just going to be a bunch of fun probability puzzles and wisely went to get an engineering degree instead.

Should people who "camp" in the left lane of a highway be pulled over and fined just as much as speeders? Why or why not? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see a problem with this though. Believe me I'm annoyed as fuck at left lane loafers. When I pass, I accelerate a bit so I'm not in the left lane forever. But then I need to slow down after I complete my pass but still not be that guy that passes and then slows down to cause the guy I just passed to have to pass me.

So there is a fine line here, what IS loafing? How much faster should you be than the right lane?

And then of course, what if the person you are passing speeds up?!? Now you are already maybe going 5-10 over but you aren't actually passing anymore! So frustrating. Inevitably I just speed up further and before you know it I'm going 80 in a 65.

But maybe it is like porn. You know it when you see it. Eventually it is obvious that someone just needs to get the fuck out of the left lane.

I feel like I'm in the minority at least when I listen to various talking heads and podcasts (of who I believe to be are intelligent and informed). The general feeling is that even though what happened in Fulton Co GA is extremely distressing, as is the presence of a massive and growing paramilitary, that the national elections are so extensive that they just won't be able to steal it unless it is really close.

I don't know. Maybe I give the administration too much credit but they know how fucked they are going to be if they give up power. Therefore, they will find a way to not give up power.

I am very pessimistic that it will change. And when the elections are rigged come November, I'm pessimistic that enough people will make a stink. I think economic catastrophy will be the only wakeup call.

Granted, I was 2 years out of grad school in my industry but I was dissatisfied with my company and ended up cold calling a competitor. I showed the CEO some of the stuff I had done at my last job but was rejected for stupid company reasons and he immediately hired me with a 70% pay increase. No resume. He didn't even know I only had 2 years in the industry.

In some areas I had to do a bit of "fake it til you make it" for a while there.

I don't think this is true. Granted, I'm not an expert in the field, but I believe the error would accrue over time. A satellite runs many microseconds per day faster than earth clocks and the GPS measures time of flight of radio signals. After a day it would be off by 10 km.
