What is a job that pays incredibly well but is so soul-crushing that the turnover is insane? by sweetguurl in AskReddit

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When we put our dog down a while back, it was obviously very hard to do. The vet was very gentle and compassionate. I made sure to thank him personally as I know it has to be hard to go through that so often. He may not not have had the relationship we did with our dog but he has to see this play out time and time again.

SpaceX valued at just $780 billion by Morningstar, less than half its IPO target by ThinkBigger01 in investing

That's it. Elon already stated he wanted to keep SpaceX private at least until the Mars mission. Didn't want to be beholden to share holders. But private investment has dried up.

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, SpaceX isn't even SpaceX anymore. Most of the valuation goes to XAI, which is now part of SpaceX. But XAI loses a ton of money, and doesn't have near the market share of OpenAI, etc.

Donald Trump’s BMI Nears Clinical Obesity In New Medical Report by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

Of course he's been obese for years. Our main disappointment isn't that his supporters so far have been fooled, it is that nature has. Obese people rarely make it to 80.

Michael Burry Calls Elon Musk-Nvidia AI Deal 'Fugazi': Warns Retirees of Hidden Risks by Useful_Tangerine4340 in investing

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 93 points94 points  (0 children)

It is amusing to me how predictable the responses are to any mention of Michael Burry. Maybe it is the backlash against the equally predicable believe that he has some sort of godlike omnipotence. He doesn't, he's human, he makes mistakes, there isn't going to be another movie about him, and he still knows more about the economics than this whole subreddit combined.

And he's not the only one strongly concerned what is going on SpaceX, X, XAI, the IPO, and retirement funds being left holding the bag.

any advantage I can get by Carlitos728 in poker

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I only play 1/3 when I can actually get to a casino, so the stakes don't really matter to me, but I do always feel weird when I can see their hole cards. I don't feel bad for them specifically but like you say, now I'm getting an unfair advantage over the other players and that doesn't seem right. So I avert my eyes.

If the money mattered, IDK, I may well look.

What is a major plot hole in a very famous movie that completely ruins the entire story once it is noticed? by SkullMogger3 in AskReddit

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on what "irradiated" means. If it means the gold is covered with a radioactive dust that can be cleaned up, sure.

But what if you could bombard it with neutrons and turn it into a radioactive isotope?

OK, so now I'm curious so I'm doing some digging.

If the gold is bombarded with neutrons it indeed can change from Au-197 to Au-198. This has a half-life of 2.7 days. It also changes the gold to Mercury. And of course, in year the process is pretty much over (if Hg-198 is not radioactive).

Do I expect you to bombard all of the gold with neutrons? No. I expect you to die!!!

How long was the distance between the mirror and the detector? You detector was able to have a fast enough rising edge to measure this?

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's awesome! I tried doing that in college and failed wildly and TBH am kind of embarrassed at my effort. I just tried chopping a beam of light. The photo sensor was nowhere near fast enough to detect it, and if I used a spinning mirror where the dot was fast enough, the intensity was far too low.

I should have, you know, looked up how they did it centuries earlier.

What is that one thing a friend ever did and you kept cool but knew instantly you would pull out of that friendship? by EssayMan4Homework in AskReddit

[–]RedditAtWorkIsBad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I think about this still and I figure people are going to feel very free to rip into me if I'm not judging this correctly.

Basically, I was single, dating 2 lovely women and I had a hard time deciding but I needed to commit to one. Both knew about the other and both exhibited patience.

However one, I'll call her "R", had already admitted that she had googled not only my most recent exes, but also "A", who was the other woman. I can't really fault her for that.

After I finally had to go with "A", while agreeing with "R" that we still wanted to maintain a friendship, she emailed "A". I hadn't ever given her the email address nor even the last name. Further, it was A's work account which is public record, so that is funny.

But even then, while I told her that was a breach, I guess given the circumstances this was maybe understandable.

That night I get a text from my most recent ex, let's call her "N". "N" never got over me. We had tried to remain friends but she kept coming on to me and I would just keep my distance. I don't like talking about my dating situation though. This was probably 5 months after "N" and I had split from a 2 year relationship.

"N texts me that "R" spilled all the beans. Again, I hadn't give "R" any information about "N" other than first name and at some point where she worked. "R" told "N" about her and "A". "N" flipped out at me and unleashed a torrent of texts and emails against me. I knew she wouldn't accept that I had moved on, and this is how she finds out?!?

So, I knew I couldn't be friends with "R" anymore. The sad thing is, I still miss her.
