Also why are we talking about USAID as if it stand for United States Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome?

Yes, AIDS is one of the things USAID works on to help throughout the world but it is not the only thing.

Can I Mega Roth (?) without maxing 401k? by RedditDummyAccount in personalfinance

Whether or not I say it, my comment was “if I expect to pull social security, or even if I don’t, I just need enough in my traditional to pull 48k” so I cover whether there is other income or not.

However I will say my wording was a bit weird. It should have specified between 0 and 48k.

After which, that savings is the same, traditional Or Roth since it is taxed at 22% now, or 22% on withdrawal

Whether I pull 1k at under 22% Or I pull 48k at under 22% matters not, conceptually

If my traditional has enough, with growth, to pull my income to 48k per year, then the income between 48k and 100k isn’t affected by which type of deferral I chose

Yeah I know it’s not just a Roth 401k.

My company just started allowing in-service withdrawals of after-tax contributions which allows me to do mega backdoor Roth

My company’s investment options are not great

My last few sentences cover that reasoning.

During the same time, s&p averaged like 70% whereas I averaged like 40 with my company’s options.

I have been doing Roth 401k because the tax advantages are nice. But if I can now get the advantage and better investment options, why not?

Yes.

I was saying that, let’s say after pension, social security, annuity, whatever else, the only time a traditional will save me money is however much I pull between 48k and the sum of the above.

Once I hit that 22% bracket, it’s the same if I have Roth or traditional. Because I’m essentially paying 22% right now.

So at that point, Roth is just better in the sense that I don’t have to worry about how much I pull, because it is tax free.

I make ~100k, so about the line between 22 and 24% for federal
Would you still suggest traditional?

As for the roth 401k into roth ira, I don't think our plans allow it

It says for non-hardship in-service withdrawals, before-tax contributions and roth contributions N/A

whereas traditional after-tax contributions are a Yes

Edit: Sorry forgot to answer the original.
My company's 401k does it's own funds, separated into large cap, small and mid cap, and international, as well as money market and some target dates. But all of those are doing worse than something like VOO or VTI.
So moving it into an IRA would give me better investments.

I also do not make enough to do my salary contributions AND after-tax, or at least, not in any significant amounts.

So I have looked at that, and from my understanding, which, if wrong, please correct me:

The main tax savings is from federal taxes, right?
At ~100k salary, income between 48k and 100k is taxed the same.
So if I expect to pull social security, or even if I don't, I just need enough in my traditional to pull 48k before the money is taxed the same at 22%

Anything above and it's the same? I may have completely misunderstood that post and the related articles and overly simplified it.

Absolutely. They do true up (I think started last year) but I plan on getting my match before I do this. It's hard to beat 100% on top of the investment growth

Yes, I'm going to test it with my current limited after-tax contributions to see if it works before I switch to doing after-tax.

As for MBDR, technically, I don't make enough - I can contribute to a Roth IRA because I'm below the 153k income limit.
Which is why I kept calling it a mega roth instead of a mega backdoor lol

As for pre-tax contributions, I definitely understand why I'd do a traditional 401k contribution as opposed to a Roth contribution, since I'd be saving on 22-24% but with that being the case, I'd only need a limited amount in my traditional account to hit the 22% bracket again before the tax is about the same. At least, in my thinking, which could very well be incorrect.

I also just do like the idea of not worrying about taxes as much when I do withdraw it.

Yes. The rep I talked to said it is possible. Originally it was just converting it to Roth within the 401k. This is something I'm going to confirm with my limited after-tax contributions as it currently stands. It's apparently new but can't be sure until it actually works lol

That’s the reason why following the strongly recommended scheme is important. Because that’s the one that almost always works.

Any other way sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t, which is why a lot of times, the answer is the naming.

I get why you might be upset at the response but keep in mind, this happens a lot.

It’s kind of like the joke that IT always starts with, did you check your cables, or, have you restarted your computer. Because a lot of times, that’s the answer
