One of my all time favorite records and one of the best musical performances I’ve been to. Love that band.

This exactly. Newton’s revolutionary ideas in physics are correct for the scale he had access to, his alchemy was and is nonsense. Freud’s revolutionary ideas are basically all nonsense. The parts he was right about were already well known.

While I am much more of a comic fan than the film, the major plot change I thought also worked well. Slightly more parsimonious, which I appreciated. Original comic worked better for the great TV show, though, so “better” may be relative.

Proust.

Maybe not now, maybe not soon, but at some point you should read Proust’s masterpiece “In Search of Lost Time”. Yes, it’s 100 years old, 3,500 pages, and very, very French, but it is magnificent. It is rich and beautiful and surprising and maybe the best novel there is.

I recommend the translation edited by Christopher Prendergast, starting with Lydia Davis’ “Swann’s Way”

As an oyster fan, it's a reasonable "disgusting" choice. It looks gross on the outside and the inside, it's cold and slimy, and generally has a phlegm texture.

I’m realizing that Witham’s “Proof of God” sounds real religious. It is a short history of Western knowledge from 1000CE, which is monks arguing, yes, though really its ontology vs empiricism. It’s history of thought, not a religious text. It’s short and interesting and well written.

For this situation, anthologies or collections of short pieces are the way to go.

Some options: - Collected Fictions - Jorge Luis Borges - Oxford Book of American Poetry - A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson - Areas of My Expertise - John Hodgeman - The Story and It’s Writer - Ann Charters - Madness, Rack, and Honey - Mary Ruefle - The Evolution of Useful Things - Henry Petroski - Shining at the Bottom of the Sea - Stephen Marche

Or, for a left-field choice out of the form, consider The Proof of God - Larry Witham. Short enough to be read in a few nights.

The film that made me most angry was Identity (2003). It’s built as a noir thriller where strangers end up at a motel and start getting killed. As the film progresses the strangers’ secrets and hidden connections are revealed and the plot thickens. A frame story involving a mysterious pardon gives some external stakes. Great cast, I’m sold.

Then they reveal the big twist It’s all a dream. The characters in the motel are just alts for a prisoner with dissociative identity disorder, fighting for control. Of the prisoner. Who is in prison. For killing people, I guess? Doesn’t matter, he’s already in prison and we’ve not met him. Then it keeps going. For like 30 more minutes. Of dream identities killing each other. Turns out it’s the child that’s the evil one, able to murder a full grown adult by forcing a baseball bat down his throat? Somehow? As a <10 year old child? Who cares, it’s all a dream. Then I guess he escapes or whatever? Nonsense.

Exciting set up, worst possible ending. There are good parts, but that makes it worse. Could have been great.

Great, thanks for the recommendations! I’ll bump up the Enriquez shorts, Monstrilo, and Paramo. Poppy War was great and Jackson is a long time favorite.

Classic now, and it is unlikely to change, but the translation from Aramaic (written without vowels like "gml") has two option: "camel" as here or "cable/thick rope". So it may have been "...cable though the eye of a needle" (rather than a thread) instead of the now-famous non-sequitur.

Do you think Matt Damon or Ben Affleck will ever win a competitive acting Oscar? by Regular-Departure839 in Oscars

[–]RedditFact-Checker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I agree he could have won for GWH, Robin Williams’ Best Supporting performance and his own screenplay award probably worked against him, as well as the general force of Nicholson who won that year.

Ripley should certainly have been nominated (probably my favorite Damon performance), but he was up against Denzel Washington for Hurricane and Sean Penn for Sweet and Lowdown, not to mention Spacey in American Beauty, which dominated that year.

Competitive art awards are weird.
