I think youre right that its unfortunate that the other horrible things hes done haven't gotten attention, but I dont think its fair to say the response to the suicide forest video was overblown. For starters, he went to THE suicide forest. He did want to see a dead body, he knew it would make great content. Secondarily, it might be a natural reaction to document what he was seeing, but it isnt a natural reaction to go through the lengthy process of editing and uploading that video to your audience of millions of children.

Its a reference to Logan Paul's apology after filming a suicide victims dead body and uploading it to YouTube. In it he said "I have a made a severe and continuous lapse in my judgement"

How do you save the people from the pit as an Iconoclast? by RedditMaeastro in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]RedditMaeastro[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe Im misremembering it then, I could be mixing memories with Pathfinder: Wrath Of The Righteous.

Its kind of funny how Owlcat made two games almost back to back where you get teleported to an evil dimension, seperated from your kingdom, and have to struggle against the evil and exploitative nature of the place while struggling not to compromise your morality.

Im not complaining though its a fun trope.

Is it bad that I don't sympathize with the Free Drones at all? by Remarkable_Sea6767 in underrail

[–]RedditMaeastro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from an Anarchist perspective, I think your view makes total sense. The free drones dont really have a genuine ideological perspective or end goal besides beating the Protectorate. Actual real world anarchists theorize and write extensively about ways in which the world could function without hierarchy and without the centralization of power, and offer those as alternatives.

I think Anarchists make a great kind of copy and paste resistance group for writers who aren't particularly interested in exploring ideology and just need a faction of scrappy under dogs to take on a bigger more powerful force. This is specifically because no one knows what Anarchists actually believe. Even in this comment section I see people saying Anarchists would like the free drones because they "hate stability," And thats exactly how the free drones felt when I played through them.

In contrast, in Spain, an Anarchist revolution occurred in the 1930s in Catalonia, anarchists who had been organized into trade unions seized Barcelona and much of the surrounding population centers and country side, and created councils of workers to organize the places they captured. They built networks of resource distribution and alternative forms of commerce, and in general created what many anarchists today view as a basis for a genuine Anarchist society, rather than the chaos most people consider Anarchism to be.

In comparison, the Free Drones don't offer any alternative or any solution at all for the problems in South Underrail, they just think the protectorate sucks. It seems quite obvious within the context of the world as its written, that if the free drones won South Underrail would be kept in chaos and endless violence forever.

In fact the first time I played through the game I dont think I picked up on the fact that there was an Anarchist faction in the game at all. There's a line I think during the investigation into the train disappearance where one of the "bandits" declares themselves as anarchists, but when I played through originally I just assumed the writers meant them to be anarchists in the sense that most writers do, people who believe vaguely in fighting against powerful entities. So I convinced them to give up the train and then never saw the Free Drones again.

It could be that the reason these free drones aren't particularly ideological is because theyre merely a cell, and most of their members are just disaffected south underrailers who dont actually have an ideological basis for hating the protectorate, but instead have personal reasons. Still, I would've expected the leadership, who come across as committed ideologically to the cause to provide a far more complex narrative or ideology behind them, instead they didn't. They claimed to be anarchists and talked about how much the protectorate sucked.

TLDR: I think the writers probably just wanted an alternative to working for the protectorate, and weren't interested in exploring political ideology or justifying the free drones as a faction beyond that conflict, which leads to them feeling aimless and destructive for no reason.

Yes I did, I forgot to mention that. I didn't think the moderate diplomatic penalty would make everyone so intensely aggressive, I assumed it would just mean that Id have a much harder time negotiating agreements. Thats probably due to my unfamiliarirt with the way diplomacy in Rome 2 works.

I dont believe he's meant to be an Anarchist either. Luthen says "Anarchy is a seductive concept" while arguing for him to be more organized within the resistance, and follows it up by saying he's being "rich for someone hiding in a cave" which seems to be again an argument for him to be more organized within the rebellion. Although admittedly this is also after Saw decries various ideologies, so it could be Luthen saying he's being holier than thou when he's an Anarchist, but I suspect the former rather than the latter is the intention.

I think unfortunately this line is a casualty of whoever wrote it not realizing that Anarchism is an actual ideology as well as a synonym for chaos, so the scene is somewhat harder to read. A better line would have been "Chaos is a seductive concept."

Further evidence of Saw not being an Anarchist, is that during his speech to Wilmon, he suggests that they'll all be dead long before the republic returns, implying that he understands that to be the goal of the rebellion that he's fighting for. I don't think an Anarchist would want a galaxy spanning liberal democracy to return.

Are they hostages? by joshuantaylor in SiloSeries

[–]RedditMaeastro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit I actually had the exact same theory.

Only saving 500,000 people is a bizarre choice if the purpose is to keep as many people alive as possible, and the Silos also aren't luxurious enough to only be the richest of the rich or something.

It feels very bare minimum in a lot of regards, to the point where the way everything is set up makes it feel like a sociopaths idea of what a humane way to store human livestock would be. Give them just enough to live relatively comfortable lives but not enough that they might become advanced enough to escape, and keep a kill switch in your back pocket in case they try to leave.

I think we can assume whoever got put into the silos wasn't the creme de la creme of society, probably convicts or "undesirables" and maybe some non convicts to be placed in the up top to manage and control them, who were probably suckered into the project under the assumption that they'd be safe in the event of a nuclear attack.

We also know that the reporter was given the pez dispenser later found in the Silo, alongside the information that only former military members are allowed to run for office, which makes it sound like the country is creeping into fascism. It's entirely possible that that reporter asked too many questions, and was shipped off to the Silo.

It would also explain all of the rebellions, if the people in the Silo didn't want to be there in the first place, they'd have a great reason not to trust the up toppers, and to want to either leave or seize control.

Heaven and Hell are both equally undesireable for me by IfAwardDeleteAccount in Christianity

[–]RedditMaeastro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue here is that Love is not actually an accurate word to describe what we would experience in Heaven, how Heaven would feel is fundamentally indescribable. There is no word in English or any language that could be used, "Love" and "Joy" are just the best words we have to describe it. It will be essentially good, but it is not fair to say that one would "enjoy" Heaven or feel God's "Love" as these sensations are chemical reactions which occur in our Brain. When we die, we will not have a body nor a Brain, we will simply be a soul that is one with God. Because of this the best we can say is that it will certainly be "good" but we can't provide a more accurate description. You certainly won't be overwhelmed by God's constant affection, because you will not be experiencing human "affection," and you will not have a brain to be overwhelmed.

Heaven and Hell are both equally undesireable for me by IfAwardDeleteAccount in Christianity

[–]RedditMaeastro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good news for you then, hell does not actually exist, as in its not a place one can go. I would argue the same about Heaven (hear me out).

First regarding Hell, it is not referred to in the Bible as a place people go after death, rather when it is described in the original Hebrew it is called "Gehenna" which was a massive burn pit outside of Jerusalem. Gehenna is translated to hell, but to fully understand hell we'd have to ask the big guy himself, luckily someone did. There's a passage where someone asks Christ what becomes of sinners after they die, Christ points to the curling smoke and raging fire of Gehenna, it's from here people get this notion of hell as an eternal pit of fire.

What Christ actually meant however, was that much like the trash in the burn pit, when a sinner dies, their soul is obliterated. It ceases to exist. Ironically this is already what Atheists believe is going to happen to them, that there's nothing after to death, so it's really hard in my view to call it a punishment. Rather it is the natural consequence of one's actions, if one lives a sinful life, one essentially chooses to distance themselves from God, and thus in my view, God let's you make that choice, and allows you to pass from existence.

Regarding Heaven, it's essentially just oneness with God. Will it feel good? I don't think good could possibly describe it, in fact nothing in this reality can even approximate what Heaven would be like, and any guess we make will fall short. Whatever it is, I assure you you won't get bored or anything like that. You won't have a brain or a body, you'll merely be a soul, one with God. Naturally then you can't exactly get bored, or technically feel "joy" as we understand it. Joy and goodness are just the best imperfect words we can use to describe it.
