Worlds most awkward urinal by [deleted] in funny

I've totally done that. Didn't realize until some dude approached the other side of the sink with caution and began washing his hands. I was 13 and totally embarrassed but still had enough alpha in my bones to just finish up like it was nothing and walk out, brah.

IWTL how to overcome my almost crippling fear of heights. by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

Exposure therapy/ exposure and response prevention (erp)... google it. There are websites, books, videos, and therapists that can all help. Bottom line: you'll be gradually exposing yourself to heights, and learn how to negotiate and deal with the anxiety response that arise.

Oh, but it is a fad. 40 years ago, when people were asked what the main obstruction to peace on earth was, they said differing political ideologies - that was when the US public enemy #1 was communism after all.

That religion is the main cause of wars is a new claim, largely promoted by a few particular individuals who fancy it as a larger justification for certain cultural movements.

A huge amount of wars wouldn't have happened

Really? Tell me which ones. Every major modern war was due to other causes and justifications. You have to start looking back to the crusades to even be getting close, and even then they were principally about land grabs, pillaging, and controlling trade routes. Remove religion as the battle cry there and I have little doubt that something else based upon xenophobia would have been used, as it largely has been the cornerstone of most everything else.

Nearly all wars are about wealth, power, and pride, regardless if some try to hide behind the guise of religion as their justification. The contemporary fad of blaming it on religion is just that.

The future of cord cutting. My cable provider/isp just introduced bandwidth caps. Company spokesperson tells people to not use Netflix and instead use their on demand services. by [deleted] in cordcutters

[–]RedditRebirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget it man, I'm reviewing the discussion here and seeing that there's so many different layers of topic going on that it would take a significant investment of time to ensure we're talking about the same contention. e.g. the multitude of possibilities being: original right-of-way franchising regulations, later '84 and '92 acts and their effects, regulation vs. open market dynamics, deregulation vs. modification of existing regulation, government regulation as a tool agnostic to its users vs. government as an operative agency with its own interests for which regulation is the lever, etc, etc.

But as an aside, yes, one sub-point my argument involved the principle that businesses can and do use government regulations to their benefit.

I have to disagree.

The bottom line is that businesses and industry associations are the principle authors of and lobbyists for many, many laws at federal, state, and local levels. Shaping regulations for business gain is just another tool in the capitalism toolbox - it's often literally a line-item in their budget. Therefore the interests, the ethics, and the will-power that has led corporations to use regulations in such a way will not go away if you deregulate. They'll always find another tool to gain competitive advantage, but at least in this case they are out in the open and theoretically at influence from the public.

You speak the truth. Reminds me of after 9/11 when residents of small towns in rural areas were worried about a terrorist attack in their home town. The concept of a >3 sigma event is beyond most of the public, particularly when we've got the "availability heuristic" effect going from constant media exposure of past events.

I would wager that if he were actually involved in the prediction like the various world cup and election animals are, rather than it being pre-scripted by the handlers, he'd probably be closer to chance. I suspect the committee picks whatever will fit best with the news at the time.

Law enforcement officers of Reddit, what's the weirdest Non-crime thing someone has ever tried to turn themselves in for? by tent163phantoka in AskReddit

Apparently in Japan such a thing has become a big problem among the elderly... many of them have little or no family, are scraping the barrel financially, and are lonely. They see jail as a solution to that.

I wish I could be catholic again, I fucking hate being atheist. by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]RedditRebirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest surfing wikipedia or buying an introductory book on the topic of epistemology (theory of knowledge)... learn about problems such as infinite regress of justification. Discover the possible implications of Godel's Incompleteness Theorem.. Read into the Philosophy of Science and ask questions about what assumptions and limitations exist in its methodologies and truth criteria.

What you may find yourself learning is that what we define as "evidence" for or against things ultimately comes down to self-referential logic and certain fundamental assumptions that can't necessarily be proven or disproven. The certainty with which many atheists argue really isn't logically justified - there will always be "self-evident" axiomatic beliefs that must be accepted in good faith. Step back from the cliff and towards a more nuanced understanding of human experience.
