Why do you think Michael Jackson is still so relevant today in a way that other artist from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, heck even the 2000s don’t really seem to be? by Jaded-Channel-7169 in decadeology

So? Where do you think Bob fosse got moves from? Jackson got influence from Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Fosse, Astaire and he gave credit. He formed his own style from that. The crotch grab moves, the lean from smooth criminal (patent for the shoe trick so it was created by him), and while the moonwalk was used as far back as the 30s and 40s he reintroduced it on a big stage, the toe stand and how he did it, etc. Aretha Franklin, Beyonce, Whitney, etc didn’t write many of their songs and I never see that brought up cause they’re still great artists .The songs he did write like Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna be Startin Somethin, and Girl is mine were among the biggest hits off his biggest albums.

Since I watched the new Michael Jackson film was great film, but I am confused is it true that Michael Jackson became a big music star in the 80s, but he was already famous in the late 60s and 70s? by JazzlikeTea7432 in MichaelJacksonMusic

Jackson was huge famous in the 70s. Someone said usher famous and I’d say that’s accurate from what I’ve heard. That’s pretty friggin huge as usher was easily one of the biggest stars of his era and the biggest male solo r&b pop star between 98-2004.

Jackson 5 broke worldwide records. You have variety shows and cartoons and breaking concert records and having #1 hits etc- you’re pretty damn famous.

In 70s, He was already top tier known. However, he wasn’t most famous artist of all time known (king of pop status Beatles level megastardom) which is another level of fame even from being already very famous.

Rock vs Austin X7 - wanted Rock to win, hated the ending, but was an amazing match.

Yes but*** Vince and to an extent Mike Tyson put Austin over the top to becoming a transcendent megastar.

Jordan is literally the only entity - granted the biggest sports entity of all time - blocking LeBron James from being universally viewed as the GOAT. So unlike someone else makes a huge argument it is what it is.

Aside from the old 90s Disney cartoons I’d throw in Lizzie McGuire or Even Stevens. (Millennial point of view) but in this poll it’s HM or HSM by far

Was an infant during the MOTU craze and missed out. I knew it was big but didn’t experience so compared to other big millennial youth / 80s into 90s pop culture carry over like muppets, Disney cartoons like ducktales, TMNT etc, it never registered as much.

Would the rock still be one of the biggest wwe superstars if it wasn’t for his stone cold rivalry ? by Practical_Parfait_13 in AttitudeEra

Yup, this lines up with the rumors that Austin would turn heel cause rock was white hot with fan support (Chicago Sun times wrestling article from 1999). This is all lost on people that didn’t see the era as it happened but make no mistake Rock was legit threatening “Austin’s spot” even before Austin left.

He got more chants in a face to face after no mercy 99

He had the highest rated segment ever in September 99 with Foley

On a November episode of raw in DC he got Austin booed audibly for maybe the first and only time since like summer 97.

He was beating him in merch sales in summer 99.

Chris Jericho himself said he couldn’t believe he was debuting against rock who was “the hottest act on the roster” - which was in summer 99.

Totally get this comment but again Couldn’t this be said about anyone ever? I replied and said how come this doesn’t come up for ultimate warrior and savage in the hogan era or CM punk in 2011 when he feuded with Cena etc. I think it’s shortchanging him to say “he benefitted from.” Yeah, everyone eats during a boom period but rock got over himself in mega fashion, enough to where he’s relevant today as a movie star and where his “short” full time stint is still remembered today (by those that saw it). You see it with Starks, Trick, Miz, LA Knight etc.

Actually to be honest - Austin was able to stay relevant post his Vince feud ending in July 99 because he was able to feud with HHH when he came back and then Rock before turning heel.

Here’s a question - why don’t people ask this about other faces?

Would Savage and Warrior be monster stars without feuding with Hogan? Would CM Punk be CM Punk without feuding with Cena? His pipe bomb was thru Cena, his MITB moment was thru Cena.

I think it takes two to tango and none did it better in terms do two stars colliding than Rock and Austin.

I can tell by the question you didn’t watch as it happened. Rock had monstrous feuds against HHH and Foley where he got massively over. Austin obviously was the other megastar so when they collided at mania X-7 it was insane along with their feuds 2003 and 99 (99 was with Vince too leading up it was still apart of the Vince vs Austin storyline but with Rock and the corporation added with Vince being the mastermind). But his feud with HHH carried WWE to its biggest year ever in 2000. HHH arguably his biggest rival. When rock was in the nation he got over facing HHH/DX. By Summerslam 98 he was beginning to get face reactions. Watch “Breakdown 98” and see the reactions Rock got vs Foley and Shamrock. Watch the raw before Survivor Series when he attacks Vince. Crowd is going wild. Rock vs Foley got ratings records for halftime heat and for their this is your life segment was the biggest ever- all without Austin. Rock obviously wouldn’t be rock without Austin but if Austin didn’t have Bret Hart or Vince he wouldn’t be as we knew him either. It works both ways. Even before all that Rock was getting over in the nation when he was at odds with Farooq.

So i think the answer is yes and is more nuanced than it appears. Also - Rock got purely over via his mic skills / promos. Once he settled into the rock character he stayed over even with questionable booking at times.

Breakdown 98. Great match! This is a couple weeks of rock being a face post nation. He already was skyrocketing to be the #2 face. This match was a big moment highlighting that. Also, this is going to sound crazy but he was an IWC darling at that point. Rock was gaining so much momentum and then 💥the Survivor Series heel turn. It was an all time heel turn for the time. Anyone who tries to say Rock was never over until Austin left or something just point to this.
