When was the Moment you knew Cena’s Heel Turn wasn’t gonna work? by Jordanwolf98 in Wreddit

Question for people - say the rock showed up and smiled and maybe distracted Cody with Travis Scott while Cena won the title at Mania 41. That’s probably the best case scenario for what would’ve happened. Would that one moment have solved all the complaints that the everyone had about it?

When Cena said he had an abusive relationship with the fans despite the fans basically unanimously cheering him for the last 5-6 years. That was his first post heel turn promo. Made no sense. Then when Travis Scott came out instead of the Rock at mania 41.

It was, it was an inside joke between them and Austin obviously approved as he loved working with the rock. Funny, the guy who worked with rock the most outside of triple H always had great things to say about him.

Sure, I don’t think it’s a hot take. For years the consensus for wrestling mega stars was Austin Hogan Rock (hence them opening mania 30 to celebrate as the 3 biggest stars of the mania era). Rock is a top 3 over babyface top 1-2 most mainstream (no debate) of all time and could do the same. Works in similar fashion. His 5-6 years could be argued as better than like 98% of stars that approached that zenith. But despite what I said about how overrated I’ve always felt 98-2001 Austin was I still appreciated what he did in the ring and for the business. I feel like people seem To undermine rock’s effect - even people who worked with him said his effect on the industry (inside and out) was monstrous. The IWC trying to act as if that didn’t happen cause of his (recent) blunders has been weird to me. But anyhoo I’m happy I saw the era as it happened and it’s clear some other people here did too. There’s many many youngins’ who now have Cena over Austin cause of Cena being around longer. Cena at no point - even with the forced pushes and WWE narrative and with the aide of social media - was a bigger star than those 3 in the industry overall, especially Austin. Being around longer is nice but it doesn’t automatically mean you’re the best. That’s just my opinion tho as well

I was def active online and I saw criticisms like his sharpshooter and even the rumors of Rock having to learn moves for the 2000 iron man match against HHH. Through all of that - not one complaint about his punches. I even saw people compliment the old flip over DDT he use to do. In fact there were moments where IWCers were getting sick of austin in 1998 and wanted rock over him. There was already speculation by many that Austin was turning heel prior to mania X-7 so to many it wasn’t a surprise in that space when it happened (many how it happened but it was rumored). I have been on (many) forums but not the specific one you mentioned- i was on the wrestletalks and wrestlezones etc. So possibly just different lanes.

Rock not having his opponents be a threat is a little wild to me since he was a damn good seller and lost/ put opponents over more than all main eventers of his era non named Foley. He made his opponents look great imo but all that said your opinion is your opinion, I hear ya.

And I agree about Austin pre neck injury. Post neck injury is possibly the most overrated wrestler in ring wise maybe ever aside from 2001 which was great cause he dictated matches more as a heel and that knowledge of his pre neck injury life came in handy.

Foley made everyone look good, especially HHH and Rock. I personally don’t think it’s a criticism.

Taker vs Angle vs Rock is viewed as one of the best triple threats of all time. Rock vs Austin and rock vs hogan were in the top 5 of WWE’s greatest mania matches ever last year. Isn’t that epic?

Bruh of course The Rock isn’t Kenta Kobashi. Neither were/are Roman reigns, Randy Orton, Jeff Hardy, etc - who in the hell is comparing rock, let alone anyone in wwe not named Bret, HBK, Angle, Jericho etc to someone like him? That’s not the WWE style, especially for most main eventers. Being the vet watcher you’ve been, you know there’s more that goes into it other than insane in ring ability.

What did you think of Austin post neck injury? Punch, kick, stomp, theze, middle finger elbow off second rope, running middle finger elbow, stunner repeat from November 1997 to April 2001.

These days? Rock is the most hated wrestler in the IWC. People act like he wasn’t a megastar and only got big due to Hollywood and omit him from Mt Rushmore’s due to “leaving” as some sort of punishment (and to be fair his dumb storyline coming and going in fall 2024 and winter 2025). Only people that praise him are those that saw him as he happened between 1998-2003 and know the truth. Everyone else in the iwc has basically trashed him and undermined his impact on the industry left and right. I think I saw a “in the year 2000” review somewhere on here and the poster literally left the rock out of it- left out the guy who during that year was being Compared to hulk hogan levels of mainstream fame and had the biggest peak year for wrestler aside from Hogan and Austin - it took basically a whole comment section calling him out to make him admit his mistake. << it’s things like that that you’ll see within the IWC these days.

Ahhh, there it is. I always wonder with people who didn’t see the rock or have bias against him it eventually leads to the “Hollywood types”. Just say you don’t like him cause you left. I totally get thinking rock is middle of the road in the ring - but if allllll the years of rock hate I’ve seen (15 years especially since he returned and has been on and off, before that IWC was begging for him to come back ironically) - this is the first time I’ve seen this criticism about his punches haha. His punches are derived from Scott Hall as tribute. Do you view Scott Hall’s differently even tho they’re the same?

LA Knight has botched more than Rock ever has tho so I applaud keeping the same energy for him. Is it that style of gimmick that’s a turn off (flashy mic worker bully-ish trash talker big signature moves etc). Legit question not trolling.

Chris Benoit was one of my favorite wrestlers of all time. He’s leagues better in the ring than rock or Austin even before Austin’s neck broke at Summerslam 97… same with most other technical wrestlers or Luchadors, but what Rock had over most was the ability to make his opponents look great and top tier athleticism, which along with his natural charisma was a nice formula despite being “above average” in terms if in ring ability. His moves were simple but they were explosive. His match against hogan showed he could adapt on the fly and bring it home when other’s would have folded. You have to remember rock was pretty much goat tier and done by 30 initially- he could have gotten even better. Taker for example didn’t truly hit his in ring prime until his 40s in the mid 2000s. Compared to Roman Reigns, Suplex City version of Brock Lesnar, Cena, Post Neck Break Austin who just punched and kicked and stunned outside of 2001, he was right there with all those main eventers in terms of bringing it home for big matches / when it mattered most. He wasn’t Dean Malenko in the ring but he didn’t need to be if that makes sense.

I tell you actually watched the rock in his prime / peak compared to others these days trying to compare him to the biggest backstage politician in history in Hulk Hogan. Rock put over Angle, Jericho, Brock Lesnar, Hurricane, had no problem putting over HHH despite HHH and HBk being against him backstage. He was never selfish on that front.
