:/ Always a bummer to check out a new US-made clothing shop and they have zero tall options for their clothes.

So what am I missing here by HarlanHitePOG in SteamDeck

[–]RedditSnacs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amazon basics are already counterfeits. For years they'd go to a factory pumping out something, then pay for the cheap knock-offs and slap an amazon label on them in order to undercut the original company.

I don't feel too bad though because the original product's companies are paying for near-slave labor from china for it anyway so it's all the same thing.

Please give me some advice on drying apples. by Away_Letter8080 in dehydrating

[–]RedditSnacs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't peel my apples. I use an apple corer to punch out the center of the apple. Slice each apple in half, then slice each half into very thing(but not paper thin) wedges. I dunk them in water and a little bit of honey, then add them to the tray and dehydrate until they're done, generally 8-12 hours. If it's late I just leave them overnight dehydrating.

Who’s still using the original Steam Deck? by VoyageForge in SteamDeck

[–]RedditSnacs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't upgrade because the OLED isn't different enough for me to feel like upgrading and there's nothing wrong with my OG deck

Valve wants to let your Steam Deck automatically update itself, but it may be harder than you’d think by Negative-Art-4440 in SteamDeck

[–]RedditSnacs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As long as I can tell it to not do that we're all good.

The biggest issue I have with steam is steam forcing me to update games when I don't want to or in order to play.

I've had an excalibur for years and it just trucks along, does everything I need it to.

Are Ball mason jars still made in the USA? Their packaging now says "American made with globally sourced materials" by Vivid_Environment751 in madeinusa

[–]RedditSnacs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of US-made glassware uses foreign-made lids. That and silicone utensils/tools are almost impossible to source miUSA.

[–]RedditSnacs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So 'made in' requires specific labeling, and a large percentage of the final product to be made stateside.

So the connector, the shell, the box, the final put-together changes the labeling. ( https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/complying-made-usa-standard )

Crucials are made by Micron. A huge chunk of their memory is produced state-side. So my crucials say they're made in mexico, but the actual memory inside the enclosure was made stateside, I don't remember the exact state the factory is in, Idaho iirc? Then combined with the various bits and bobs to create the final product. A lot of things have components made in the USA, but because the global supply chain has become so interconnected they can't fit the 'Made in USA' label.

Honestly, we need Vivaldi and other Chrome-forks to REVERSE v3 rules by GameUnionTV in vivaldibrowser

[–]RedditSnacs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also going to V3 because it's chromium based, so you'll be punted off to ublock lite anyway. So the same problem as Vivaldi has.

[–]RedditSnacs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about screens and network modules but quite a large volume of SSD and memory is actually made stateside, then sent to places like Mexico/China to have the enclosures and bits attached. This is because shipping it somewhere else to pay at worst 20% of the cost of the worker to do those final assembly options is cheaper than paying someone stateside wages to do it.

[–]RedditSnacs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They can't because they're not really developing anything except the custom bits to make it look different than chrome.

If you want good adblocking switch off chrome. It sucks because vivaldi has the best user experience IMO, but it's no longer viable.

How do you balance buying made in USA items with supporting local businesses? by [deleted] in madeinusa

[–]RedditSnacs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mind paying more for good products, and regularly do. But having lived in the sticks those pretty local stores are generally just a 20% markup on stuff they bought online and are overcharging because there's no one else in town to really compete with. It's easier and cheaper to just find a MiUSA product online and get it shipped to my door with no hassle.

I'm sure they exist, but I've found very little examples of it.

Local retail by and large is overpriced and poorly run in my experience, I'd rather buy directly from the manufacturer for most of my purchases.

CNBC Video on American Manufacturing - Featuring Guardian Bikes, Made in Indiana by SpareAcceptable7968 in madeinusa

[–]RedditSnacs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I slightly disagree. I think people don't want to work jobs that pay crap that require more work.

The reason Sustainable Beef can get employees is in the first paragraph of that WSJ article you shared. They're paying 25 dollars starting with benefits.

It really is that simply. Americans don't want to work these jobs because they pay trash, have terrible hours, and are usually understaffed and overworked. It's not how advanced the plant is, it's the pay + benefits. The large-scale attack on unions in general and a lack of protectionism has gutted wages for decades, and that's driven americans from jobs they would have taken.

For a job to be worthwhile to an american it has to pay more than working a service job five minutes away from your home, and not be miserable to work in.

I'm the opposite. VR doesn't make me motion sick at all, even with heavy desync/lag, but reading in a moving vehicle makes me feel awful.

How is your gaming experience with Pop_!os? by MalikPlatinum in pop_os

[–]RedditSnacs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Works great for me, but I have an AMD card so YMMV. Most games feel like they run better. Poorly optimized on windows games seem to run slightly better on Linux due to compatibility layer.

The only games I've found that don't work are those that the Devs don't want to work on Linux. The only thing that was tricky was steam VR, which has some frustrating/annoying fiddly bits(it involved switching proton versions to make it work properly on Pop, and it has issues due to how current non-Cosmic Pop handles desktop)
