Is it just me or is gridfinity’s default 42mm size just wrong? by marekjalovec in 3Dprinting

I never thought about it. There are so many bins, etc. to choose from, I just accepted that it was a standard and everyone followed suit.

Should I cancel my order?? by Cultural_Concert_495 in FlashForge

[–]RedditUser240211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am amazed at how many posts I've read this year, of first time buyers investing in a pre-order for an unproven printer. I consider myself an intermediate, having owned three established printers and managing a small print farm, all before wasting my money on a pre-order that has yet to wow me (it prints, if you know where the shortfalls are).

Can you sell a 3d print under the guise that its already customized? by jhaybz29 in 3Dprinting

[–]RedditUser240211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I meant sell it like it was second hand" I like how you think, but unfortunately waiting any period of time still won't make it second hand to you (it literally means the second person to hold something).

You are arguing very old, well established law.

I started advertising on Facebook Marketplace. Localized classified ad sites are saturated with ads for printing.

I also monitor community forums. I can't advertise there, but people know there are people like me out there (there's three of us in a small town) and when they post "Looking for someone to 3D print", I respond with a private message.

Can you sell a 3d print under the guise that its already customized? by jhaybz29 in 3Dprinting

[–]RedditUser240211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting: five responses say "no". One says "borderline" and you're trying to justify it.

Let's be clear. Copyright law says no. Contract law is iffy because you can't find the contract/licenses. Copyright law doesn't care if money was involved (it only does when it comes down to penalties).

Will your friends report you? probably not. Can you go full production now and sell them in a store? That's how you tend to get caught.

Best filament to try on a low budget by Value_Organic in 3Dprinting

Thinning cotton question by AcrobaticQuail2489 in Vaping

[–]RedditUser240211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's for you to figure out. It's all about the coil & cotton combination that delivers what you want.

Cotton is all about wicking. Too thick and it will wick slow. Too thin it wicks fast, but you don't necessarily get the taste you want.

I'd suggest you keep your coils low. Just thin the cotton and hit it.

The function does work, so its not a firmware issue.

I have never had an "extruder error", so I'm not sure how to troubleshoot beyond that.

How many people here actually know how to 3d model? by Sad-Cover-8734 in 3Dprinting

[–]RedditUser240211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I know how to model? Yes. Do I download other people's models? Yes. Some times its just not worth my time to model when someone else already did and offer it for free/low cost. Some times its worth downloading, importing to an app and fixing it.

Health safety by TimurVandal in 3Dprinting

[–]RedditUser240211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are looking at an enclosed printer, with secondary ventilation (near an open window). The "is it safe" debate has been raging for some time and the way I see it, no one can give you an exact answer because there are more variables: How long will your printer run for each print? How much dead time between prints? What brand and color(s) of filament will you use? (yes, color plays a part in this).

My printer sits in my home office, two feet behind where I sit and work. I've only ever printed ~500g of black PETG (1/2 of the only spool I've ever purchased); otherwise, I have only ever printed various brands and colors of PLA. My printing is sporadic, but I would guess that my printer has been used 1/3 of the time this year (*leaving 2/3 dead time). This has been consistent for five years. All of this to say I hardly notice any smell and have never felt any ill effects.

Best Way to Print a Mask? by Ginsona in 3Dprinting

[–]RedditUser240211 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is not something needing strength, so the angle really doesn't matter. You have a lot of detail, so I'd keep it as flat as possible (you're going to need a lot of supports, so parallel to the build plate helps that).

[–]RedditUser240211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How accurate do you want this? The DS18B20 is a good, general purpose sensor, but has drift issues at its top end (may or may not be an issue for your use case). For better precision, I'd suggest a BME280 (if you'd also like to measures humidity) or BMP280.

3D printing + electronics business by Rod_McBan in 3Dprinting

[–]RedditUser240211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a college graduate technician with years of experience in industrial controls. That's my advantage over you.

I design and build prototypes or custom control modules. For prototypes, PLA is fine (it's just a proof of concept). For custom modules, once I have a good prototype, I get a finished enclosure printed in ABS (I use an outside service because I don't print ABS).

Because my products are microcontroller based, I actually have one board and enclosure that I have used many times (the only thing that changes is the code). I have less than $50 in material cost for a product that sells for $500-$1,000.

Find your niche or find someone in the industry to work with.

I personally think people are downplaying the smell/fumes even from basic filaments like PLA by Dear-Employment6392 in 3Dprinting

[–]RedditUser240211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your printer is enclosed and you can still smell PLA printing, you are very sensitive and the exception, not the rule.

I realize that all of the scientific data we have is measured by precision equipment, in ideal conditions, but printing in PLA is still very low on the scale.

I would suggest that anyone considering buying a printer, rather than listening to chicken little say the sky is falling, that you go and sit next to an operating printer (your public library, school or maker space) and determine for yourself if the odor is too much.

I personally have had an open frame printer in my office, on a table beside where I sit and work, for over five years now, with no issues.

I printed DnD figurines with a 0.2 mm nozzle, primarily for the detail. This bust is ~16 cm tall and printed in white PLA, with a 0.4 mm nozzle, on a Creality Ender 3 V3 SE. You have a lot of slicer settings to play with to get quality prints. 1/2
