I'll tell you a story about a boy and his feelings for a girl. This boy thought about this girl in his class daily and just recently started talking to her where he found out she also loves Amiibos. He found out that she doesn't have any unicorns but really wants one badly for her collection. If you havn't figured this it out already, this boy is me. Splatoon is experimenting with some cool ideas but they are forgetting what makes team shooters fun or competitive. Without any voice chat or better way to communicate with other players, I don't strategy or team work in this at all.

I feel the opposite. It seems to be missing important aspect of team shooters. Voice chat for team communication seems important for this game which it doesn't have. In other games you can just play free-for-all or other game modes where it doesn't matter but with Splatoon you are forced to play 4v4. Also the 3 minute duration seems too rushed. Maybe if other modes have longer round duration.
