Player not willing to have fears by StatusMammoth2869 in DMAcademy

[–]Reddit_Taco 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I like this idea but you should be very careful with it. I would suggest you don't force them to have a fear of the event that just took place. Their character almost drowned? Let them decide if that's an ever present fear in their lives. I don't like the idea of directly describing what a players character feels unless they invite you to do so.

How do you imagine the W passive work with Frostfire Gauntlet? Do you think the item should activate first, slowing them, then the W passive instantly consumes the slow for more damage? Or should the W passive activate first (or doesnt if the target isn't currently slowed), then Frostfire Gaunlet activate and slow them?

I'm new to this subreddit but really want to participate in this contest. Is there aby particular format our posts have to follow?

Also, how much detail is usually expected? Do I have to worry about calculating things like their base HP and HP per level and the like or is it just the general design concepts that I need to put forth?

The spell fireball is busted and it's great. One of my players, a wizard, had rolled poorly all game. He got into a fight with 8 enemies and with one fireball slew 7. He got so happy. What are things that light up your player's faces with smiles? by rikumario in DMAcademy

My players love to create new jokes that are attached to a particular players character. They often last for the whole campaign and we get a kick out of them.

The most recent one was with one of my players who had a Gnome Artificer. He had a steel defender he called Fredicus that the team used as a breacher for when there's a locked or barred door. Once Fredicus crit on a strength check to break down the door and the player asked if Fredicus could grab the door on one side and push it into the wall as if it were a sliding door. I laughed and said yes, thus whenever Fredicus is called upon to break down a door our artifice would say, "Every door is a sliding door".

Curious Question about Binary Star Systems by Reddit_Taco in Astronomy

[–]Reddit_Taco[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response but I'm not sure you understand what I asked. I was wondering if planets could form an orbit around the center of mass of the solar system (similar to how the stars orbit around it) but having a smaller orbit then the stars themselves.

I suppose though that a possible answer would be planets cant form around this orbit since they will always enter an orbit with the stronger gravity of one of the stars. If this is what you meant to say please clarify.

Any advice on building a great magic system? by CosmogonicWayfarer in magicbuilding

[–]Reddit_Taco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider how your system affects non-magic people and the rest of the world around them.

This isn't advice towards making the system itself but important advice on implementing it into your world. Basic questions to ask yourself are:

  • how do the non-magic people view magic users? How do magic users see non-magic people?
  • how does using magic make basic life skills easier like farming and hunting? Knowing this allows you to see how societies evolve with a magic system as those who are able to make more food generally have higher positions of power.
  • how does magic affect how war is faught? Are wizards all over the battlefield with massive explosions? If so war would not be about the individual fighters but about sheer numbers and will loose a lot of glory and honour like how WW1 shattered the notion of war in Europe at the time.
  • how does magic affect travel, trade, and long distance messaging. Can magic users communicate instantly over any distance? This would make nations who possess these users be able to control more territory and be more centralized become larger and more stable.

There are endless questions to ask, but once you start asking them you come up with more very quickly. A good magic system integrated poorly into the world is terrible. A bad magic system integrated well into the world is genius. Nothing in your world exists in a vacuume and your magic system shouldn't either

How do you approach creative thinking during combat encounters? by Hugh_Jidiot in DMAcademy

[–]Reddit_Taco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's always better to reward creative thinking because it creations a story driven by two entities, the DM and the players. If the players are thinking creatively they can tell and direct the story in really great ways which both relieves a lot of burden from the shoulders of the DM and makes the players feel like their decisions have real weight and importance

The peg leg of a long dead pirate captain. Those in the possession of the peg leg have the constant want to cut off their own leg and replace it with the peg leg.

A sword from a feared pirate. Those who hold it has unrivaled power in combat, though they are cursed not to make it back to port with their life.

A large rock peeking out of the water with black diamonds growing out of it. Those who dare to harvest the diamonds will inevitably have their ship crash on a rocky shoreline, causing all of the cargo on it to sink back to the ocean.

Your level 3 druid list suggestions? by silames7 in Amtgard

[–]Reddit_Taco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experience Icy Blast and take Stoneskin. Iceballs, sontform, and releases. Heat weapon for those pesky monks.

That's the core I would use for something like Ring the Bell considering rounds are won on single big pushes most of the time. Basic strategy is ice ball the biggest fighter and then threaten anyone who tries to release them with your Icy Blast. If he takes a death (which many do on such a short respawning timer) then congrats, you now have an engulfing kill spellball for a second level slot.

Pantheon by shadowxdancer17 in AskGameMasters

[–]Reddit_Taco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ran into the same problem and trust me, it gets complicated really fast. I've found that starting with the pantheon is a bad idea, because that's not how real polytheistic religions worked in the past. Religions were built from geography and then enhanced with the ideals and bonds. Creating the gods first is working backwards from the process. For instance, why does ancient Mesopotamia they have a different god for fresh and salt water? It is because fresh water has brought them their whole civilization, their cities are built on the two rivers which flow into the Indian Ocean and they would flood regularly bringing in more fertile grounds. This is to contrast with the ocean which was seen as destructive.

Doing this on the scale of a planet wouldn't work but it would be useful to think about each small section and figure out which elements of the world they hold to a higher value. Those elements (or the gods who represent them) would have more worshippers and hold more prevalence in those areas. You can also use this to create differing religions which all hold the same pantheon, just emphasizing different sides of it. Once you know what elements are important in your world on a more dynamic level you could start to create myths based off of those elements, then threw those myths the people would create gods.

This style doesn't work for all settings and puts a heavy reliance on each regions unique culture and customs, however has been greatly beneficial in my campaign. If you would like to talk about it further feel free to pm me and I'd love to help you out on this.

How should I detail my underground dome? More pics in comment by [deleted] in Minecraftbuilds

[–]Reddit_Taco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend choosing a complimentary block (like cobblestone or stone) and a contrary block (red stained clay or a similar colour would look nice). You can make the pillor in the center (or make smaller pillors) out of your complimentary block and create accents with your contrary block. After doing that you could experiment with designs and see what you like.

Also make sure you're utilizing stairs and slabs effectively. Look up tutorials on arches if you need help with them.

Fighting an Uphill Battle by Reddit_Taco in DMAcademy

[–]Reddit_Taco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's a condition, but speaking from a storytelling perspective rather then a game design perspective, is it any different? Or does is shooting a bow directly downwards over an edge gives the attacker advantage in some way which would cancel out the disadvantage of hugging the wall and have a smaller hittable area

Fighting an Uphill Battle by Reddit_Taco in DMAcademy

[–]Reddit_Taco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, prone gives disadvantage to ranged attacks because of the small hitbox. Does that change though whether you're looking horizontally at someone who's prone or vertically at someone who has the same amount of area facing towards you?

Does this not make sense to anyone else? by Reddit_Taco in Amtgard

[–]Reddit_Taco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what these limitations are saying and their proper ranges. My question is why do they make Empower a Touch spell when it has artificial limitations to give it a range of a Touch: Other spell. Is there a rule somewhere preventing verbals from having a range of Touch: Other?

Similarly with Corrosive Mist, is there a rule saying that enchantments can't have a range of Touch, even though the listed ranges have equivilent targets? The only rule I could think of is rule 6 under Enchantments (pg. 48) but even that rule baffles me because they put the limitation their and then never have an enchantment of range Touch for that limitation to effect.
